I just restored a Bally Orient. It was in pretty bad shape, but I have it looking pretty good now. I got a lot of info from this forum...there is an amazing amount of technical expertise, as well as some very willing and helpful folks that contribute to this site. I could have never accomplished this restoration without the help of the many posts I found searching this site. Thanks to all of you who helped me, and don’t even realize just how much your posts mean to us novice pinsiders, trying to clean, paint or repair our bingo.
As I was searching for answers to many of my problems, or looking for products to use or venders to try, I noticed that I did not see any posts from someone else with an Orient. I later searched the forum specifically for posts mentioning Orients...still with no luck. So I was wondering if there are any pinsiders out there that have an Orient...or a Bamboo, for that matter? Thanks for the compliment, Terry...I used Eiko 47 bulbs throughout the playfield, as well as the back glass (except for the numbers in the magic screen); same as for the red bulbs, Eiko 47-R. They aren’t as bright as some, but I think their taller profile especially work better in the play field lamps, than the short, brighter round bulbs...supposed to be cooler and I think they are plenty bright.

That’s good to know...I thought they were a little dim. I think I have 8 red bulbs in all, counting the red letter bulbs...should they all be 55’s? Do I paint them with the same acrylic paint I used for playfield, or use a transparent?

Thanks, Jon. A small pantry had one of these in the late 60s that I played as a teen, so was my favorite, as well. I haven’t seen another one since. And, I never hear of anyone talking about one, so they must be rather scarce. My playfield was in terrible shape; so bad I searched everywhere for another one...wanted a NOS, but would have taken anything in decent shape. Couldn’t find one, so I repainted the entire thing. If you look closely, you can see where I told some “artist liberty” with some of the original artwork detail, because a lot of the paint was either planked, or just came off during the cleaning or sanding. I added a few “before” photos.
Anyway, glad to meet another Orient owner...really curious how many operational Orients may be out there.

How many red bulbs are in your Orient? I know the two red letter slots, but I also had some along the top row of bulbs on the right side of glass, lighting the “Orient” name. Also, see my note to “okorange” below:

Okorange... I tried what you suggested, painting 55’s and replacing the red 47’s. The two red letters bulbs are nice and bright, but now the 47’s along the rows behind the “Orient” are barely burning; as if not getting enough current. I put 55’s where I had the red 47’s and they won’t even light. Can you advise?

OK...mine had red in the “red letters” feature, so I put red back in. It also had one red and one clear behind each of the Orient letters...so thanks for clearing that up for me. I have to get two more, since I only bought one box, but I think that’s going to solve my problem. I really appreciate your, and several others on this site, for your help.

Thanks guys....I had some wrong bulbs in wrong places. I combined what all of you suggested above, and everything is working perfectly now. I never realized the “Orient” letters lit up red in sequence with the red odds. My machine had so many bulbs burned out, I replaced every one of them, and as I mentioned there were some red bulbs where they weren’t supposed to be. And, I used 47’s throughout, not knowing that the circuit required 55’s in that top row. It looks so much better, properly lit!!

I was about to “get lit” wondering what was going on with my lights...thank goodness for all the fine folks on this site that got me up and running properly. Someone needs to publish a “Bingo for Dummies” book...I’ll buy the first book!!!
