I just restored a Bally Orient. It was in pretty bad shape, but I have it looking pretty good now. I got a lot of info from this forum...there is an amazing amount of technical expertise, as well as some very willing and helpful folks that contribute to this site. I could have never accomplished this restoration without the help of the many posts I found searching this site. Thanks to all of you who helped me, and don’t even realize just how much your posts mean to us novice pinsiders, trying to clean, paint or repair our bingo.
As I was searching for answers to many of my problems, or looking for products to use or venders to try, I noticed that I did not see any posts from someone else with an Orient. I later searched the forum specifically for posts mentioning Orients...still with no luck. So I was wondering if there are any pinsiders out there that have an Orient...or a Bamboo, for that matter? Here’s a pic of my freshly finished pride and joy

You have a great looking game there! Nice work.

I have yet to have the opportunity to spend any amount of time on a working bingo. I had a sea island along time ago the only partially worked that I ended up trading, as well as a dead in the water Bali which was sold.

Thanks...you ought to try a bingo sometime...nothing like them!

Frank, you did a great job
It looks beautiful.

Frank, I meant to ask, what lights are you using for your
play field?

Nice work! I've been curious about how many Orients and other 20 holers are still around. Compared to the 25s, they seem a bit more scarce.

I've always liked the tower games added to the 20 holers starting with Orient. Really interesting challenge.

#7 4 years ago

Thanks for the compliment, Terry...I used Eiko 47 bulbs throughout the playfield, as well as the back glass (except for the numbers in the magic screen); same as for the red bulbs, Eiko 47-R. They aren’t as bright as some, but I think their taller profile especially work better in the play field lamps, than the short, brighter round bulbs...supposed to be cooler and I think they are plenty bright.

Frank, check out this gem
LED tower, super bright and little to no heat.
Fits nicely under the light shields.
I realize it's not a purest thing, but, it lights up
my play field like a runway!!

Frank, your red letter bulbs should be 55's. You probably will have to paint them over, but the difference will be remarkable. My understanding is the way that circuit is designed requires the two different types of bulbs due to resistance differences. bingopodcast or baldtwit can confirm this and explain it better than me.

#11 4 years ago

That’s good to know...I thought they were a little dim. I think I have 8 red bulbs in all, counting the red letter bulbs...should they all be 55’s? Do I paint them with the same acrylic paint I used for playfield, or use a transparent?
Thanks for the heads up...this was my first bingo re-do.

#12 4 years ago

Yes, all the red should be 55. I paint with acrylic and simply hold them upside down then dip them into red paint. Clip them up somewhere to dry and you've got a nice red letter bulb.

As okorange mentioned, the circuit is perfectly balanced for a #47 and a #55. Any combination of other bulbs will malfunction (more than one red letter lit, no red letters lit, etc). Also, this is the only part of the machine that required the use of a #47 from the factory.

#13 4 years ago

Thanks to you both...glad y’all caught that! I didn’t know it made a difference.
I’ll swap out all the red 47s for painted 55s.

I'm in need of the Triple Play control board for a Bally London. Its the board mounted down on the Triple Play control unit mounted down in the lower cabinet. It has all the transistors and resistors and capacitors mounted on it. Gary at [email protected]

Bob and I are still in need of the money you owe us. What is it now Gary, 2 years?

Frank - You did a fantastic job restoring this game. It's the best looking Orient I've ever seen. I also have one, but not in the condition that yours is in (I've uploaded some images of mine). Orient is a very special bingo to me, as it's the first 20 hole machine I every played on the street. It's part of my collection of 20 holers (along with London, Safari, Bonus-7, and Magic Ring). Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Jon. A small pantry had one of these in the late 60s that I played as a teen, so was my favorite, as well. I haven’t seen another one since. And, I never hear of anyone talking about one, so they must be rather scarce. My playfield was in terrible shape; so bad I searched everywhere for another one...wanted a NOS, but would have taken anything in decent shape. Couldn’t find one, so I repainted the entire thing. If you look closely, you can see where I told some “artist liberty” with some of the original artwork detail, because a lot of the paint was either planked, or just came off during the cleaning or sanding. I added a few “before” photos.
Anyway, glad to meet another Orient owner...really curious how many operational Orients may be out there.

Frank - you did an amazing job with that playfield! It was in really bad condition. The playfield in my picture has a South Carolina tax stamp in the upper left corner from 1976. I probably picked up the playfield down there. Years ago I had a friend in South Carolina named Greg Duke who was a 20 hole bingo fan. I sold him two Orients (one shopped and one not working) 20 -25 years ago. I also sold one years ago to a friend in Gulfport Miss. That game was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.

#19 4 years ago

Jon...thanks for the kind remarks. Who knows...you may have the very game I used to play! If so, you owe me a truck load of quarters !
How many red bulbs are in your Orient? I know the two red letter slots, but I also had some along the top row of bulbs on the right side of glass, lighting the “Orient” name. Also, see my note to “okorange” below:

Okorange... I tried what you suggested, painting 55’s and replacing the red 47’s. The two red letters bulbs are nice and bright, but now the 47’s along the rows behind the “Orient” are barely burning; as if not getting enough current. I put 55’s where I had the red 47’s and they won’t even light. Can you advise?

Thanks again for both of your help...I would never had been successful with my restoration without the help of this site.

Frank, that orient looks awesome. You did a really nice job. You should be proud. Congratulations.

Sorry Frank, the red bulbs go behind the title only. There are two bulbs for each letter in 'orient'. The actual feature of the red letter can use a 47 Orr a 55 (plain).

#22 4 years ago

OK...mine had red in the “red letters” feature, so I put red back in. It also had one red and one clear behind each of the Orient letters...so thanks for clearing that up for me. I have to get two more, since I only bought one box, but I think that’s going to solve my problem. I really appreciate your, and several others on this site, for your help.

to be exact, the top row of lamps behind the ORIENT letters on the backglass should be red 55's. The bottom row should be plain 47's.

one letter of the word orient should be lit in red, the rest stay white.

by a non-coincidence, the red letter in orient corresponds to the red score level like this:
score levels 4-12 (for 3-in-zone) = red O
levels 16 and 24 = red R
last 4 levels = red I thru T

#24 4 years ago

Thanks guys....I had some wrong bulbs in wrong places. I combined what all of you suggested above, and everything is working perfectly now. I never realized the “Orient” letters lit up red in sequence with the red odds. My machine had so many bulbs burned out, I replaced every one of them, and as I mentioned there were some red bulbs where they weren’t supposed to be. And, I used 47’s throughout, not knowing that the circuit required 55’s in that top row. It looks so much better, properly lit!!

#25 4 years ago

Bingo's are much more fun when
you are well lit
Terry K

#26 4 years ago

I was about to “get lit” wondering what was going on with my lights...thank goodness for all the fine folks on this site that got me up and running properly. Someone needs to publish a “Bingo for Dummies” book...I’ll buy the first book!!!
