Adobe has released a free AI voice restoration tool called Adobe Speech Enhancer.

    https://podcast.adobe.com/enhance

    Example of this in use:

Anyone with an Adobe account want to try this with some callouts to see if the audio seems improved?

Imagine the privilege of listening to Stargate telling you to shoot the pyramid in Hi-Fi quality!

Interesting! If you got any audio files I'd be happy to try it out with my Adobe account.

I'll comb through a couple Data East ROMs and rip the 8kHz 8-bit speech, we will see what it can do. Thanks.

I’m dying to know the results of this test. Think of how we might be able upgrade the original callouts of older games to have 16-bit or greater sounding audio!

    Whoops! Fixed it.

The 'enhanced' version is definitely not preferable to my ears.

    #10 1 year ago

I hope someone applies this to the horrible samples used for the funhouse pinsound rom.

I didn't like it better either, but I live in Indy and we can only listen to the race on AM Radio, so the slightly crackly original sounds right to my ears.

I think it would better improve older games with more muffled speech, like System11 or Data East Version 3. Both of those used uncompressed audio unlike Williams DCS. DCS audio has compression artifacts that may affect the result.

I'd like to hear what it does to speech from TAF or TZ.

Well... you COULD say it's 'enhanced'. But I think what we're really listening to is that Tim Kitzrow, with all due respect, does not sound all that much like Rod Serling:

That's interesting. I think the distortion/static on the original sample caused incorrect words to come out. Otherwise, I'd say it's a lot crisper quality. That makes me wish for original uncompressed audio samples even more now.

I wonder if they exist. That would be a hell of a selling point for a TZ remake, if they had clean but original audio.

Here ya go, for anyone interested. Uncompressed Hook and Jurassic Park samples.

Unfortunately those are long, long gone; went on a hunting expedition a while back for the tapes. Since they switched from DCS back to the older audio bus, there wasn’t a lot of time to screw around and nothing was catalogued

Wait, Williams abandoned DCS? For what games?

    Quoted from Crash:

They didn’t abandon DCS, it just wasn’t quite ready for the first game that was planned to use it, Twilight Zone. Chris Granner had done almost all the music and programmed it on the DCS chip when it was decided to go back to the previous audio chip (same as in TAF) which is 8-bit. So there’s an entirely different set of music out there for the game

there used to be a phenomenal article that went through all the differences in the prototype TZs, but it looks like they’ve put it behind a paywall! That sucks, I’ve been referring to that since 2014

This one is written by check_switch_26 so it is REALLY accurate, and goes over his other upgrades, and the 9.3h ROM

This article is the one that goes over every excruciating detail:

I believe there’s also a Pinside thread with roughly the same content

DCS-specific notes and recording in first post, from the original Granner DAT tape release. This more or less inspired the PinSound project:

Nice! I couldn’t get that to work on my phone. Thanks!

No problem. Any luck with the Data East samples I uploaded?

    #28 1 year ago

I think it sounds better. I tried it from a voice clip from Guns n' Roses (haha voice sound) but unfortunately it messed up the beginning sound.
