It's to protect from RF interface.

If there is one truism about pinball, it's that they did not spend a penny on something unless it was absolutely necessary, lol.
The understanding of RF was in it's infancy 40 years ago compared to today.
Any store that sells roofing materials will be able to cut and bend that aluminum roll for you.
If you want to cut it yourself, score it with a razor knife and bend it over the table edge.
