Jim Neeley's Interstate BBQ for the win in Memphis.

#80 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Rib wars!! Any more Memphis BBQ joints? My favorite is either pulled pork or smoked brisket. Fiona likes ribs though.
rd

For pulled pork (my favorite as well) Interstate is the place. Original location on US 61 (3rd street) in Memphis. Only a couple miles from the Elvis carnival area.

There's In-N-Out Burger's all around Las Vegas. If you've never had, you should try it. Won't be as cheap as the fallen arches. But tastes way better.

#113 8 years ago
Quoted from mcluvin:

Good God! Why would you ever eat at McDonald's when In-N-Out is everywhere? Buy a few t-shirts at the corp office and marvel at how no matter where you go when you get back home, somebody will ask you if there is an In-N-Out nearby.

Well, the Corporate offices are in Baldwin Park, California so I don't think our New Zealand guests are heading over there. There is a Company Store at the location due West of the New York-New York casino & I-15 on Dean Martin Drive. The one with the casino-style sign. All of their swag is available there with the exception of maybe the Texas & Utah shirts. I was able to get some California shirts at the Las Vegas location. Photos of the Baldwin Park campus including a replica of "Location #1" along with one of their catering trucks plus a shot of my "decade-old, secondhand Audi" by the Las Vegas location I mentioned.IMAG4021_(resized).jpgIMAG4021_(resized).jpg

Coincidentally, The first Fatburger I ever ate at was the one in Sunset Station in Henderson, Nevada.

#158 8 years ago
Quoted from str8cash:

Maybe check out the pinball hall of fame tomorrow.

In case you weren't aware nor could recognize it by the photos; The tournament that Rotordave and Danni were providing updates on was held at the PHoF.

#159 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

We have a free day tomorrow (Sunday) here in Vegas, and then we fly to NYC Monday afternoon. Nice one!
rd

image_(resized).jpeg

I'd enjoy the day relaxing. But, if you wanted to do something different, with the family, go to the Ethel M. store/factory and cactus gardens. The factory is not open on Sunday but the cactus gardens are something to see. It's only a couple miles away from PHoF on Sunset Road where it makes the sharp turn at Mountain Vista.

Ethel M. was Ethel Mars; Of Mars Candy fame.

#161 8 years ago

The construction of the Dam bypass bridge was really impressive to watch over the years too.

#167 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Found this Olds today in Vegas. 1966, one owner, 33,000 miles since new. $6999 asking.
Interior looks mint. Guy wasn't in today so just looked at the outside.
About the same size as a truck.
What does the group think?

A friend of mine has the two-door version. Look out for rear wheel-well rust into the trunk and if the fuel tank is rusted at the middle seam. If so, you can only put in just under 1/2 a tank full and they are thirsty beasts.

That car is so long it won't even fit inside most Vegas tract house garages.

#172 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Ideal mafia car.

Speaking of The Mob; look who recently passed on. Maybe we'll finally find out about Jimmy Hoffa...

Just waiting at McCarron airport in Vegas for the flight to NYC via Phoenix.
Filling in the time with some Goose Island IPA. Not too bad a drop ....
rd

Chicago's inter-city Island: Goose Island. Right by the former Seeburg factory.

#287 8 years ago

You guys need to come to the VFW, which has the add-on Bidet automated spray-o-matics with heated seats. The poor man's version of the individual toilet-with Bidet next to it that you see in many Las Vegas hotels which cater to non-Americans.

#303 8 years ago

Rode it for the first time in 1979. Do they offer re-rides for $5.00? IIRC, it was $3.00 back then and re-rides were $1.00. Last time I rode it I think it was $6.00 to ride. Today it's $10.00 US.

#308 8 years ago

My parents rode that Parachute Jump ride on their Honeymoon in 1949. I remember seeing it abandoned in 1979. And a few years later with my dad. He recalled riding it and the fun it was.

#311 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

EDIT ... Just checked, indeed the dearest Annual pass for Disneyland is $1049 USD. The cheapest option is $600 USD. F**k the mouse.

But you get a really cool RFID wristband... It can be programmed to open your hotel room door if staying at a Diss knee resort.

A small price to pay for the CONvenience.

#357 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Oooooh burn!!
Hoboken was quite cute. And everything was much cheaper than NYC. it was like visiting a little town on Route 66 rather than something that was a few miles from NYC.

Frank Sinatra's hometown....

#425 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

So as I was saying, we drove to Centralia. This place was a prosperous coal mine town, until the underground mines caught fire in the 1960s. The fire gave off carbon monoxide so eventually everyone had to leave or was forced to leave by the government. Except for 7 people who refused to leave. They're the last two houses standing.
Anyway, you can read about it here if you want to:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia_mine_fire
There were a few people around checking out the graffitied abandoned highway, and some guys on 4 wheelers doing skids in a pond by the highway. All the streets are still there ... Quite eerie how everything was just gone, like it never existed. No Centralia signs anywhere, as the town has no Zip code so officially it doesn't exist. We finally found a sign 2 miles up the road with Centralia on it.

If you make it to the midwest US next trip, you need to go to what's left of Times Beach, Missouri. The Hooker Chemical-Love Canal area in Niagara Falls, New York is an interesting story too. Especially now that the area has been declared "safe" awhile back.

#450 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Good move.
Nimblepin wanted to move to my 7 acres in Pukekohe and set up a commune, we could easily go full Amish. Horses for all.
rd

No pinball without electricity though. Maybe the '20's & early '30's stuff....

Weird when driving in Amish or similar sect areas mainly in Ohio & Pennsylvania where you'll see power lines along the roads with triplex leads going to homes and then you'll see homes with no wires going to them. Drive by at night and you'll see candlelight only.

#453 8 years ago
Quoted from str8cash:

That's what generators are for

Not exactly allowed in certain sects. Wild to see candlelight only and no wiring. Guess they're not paying monthly fees for internet either.

#474 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Drove 200 odd miles out to Pittburgh today. Went most of the way on the toll road, about $25 worth to go the distance.
They had a series of very impressive tunnels through the hills.
rd

image_(resized).jpegimage_(resized).jpegimage_(resized).jpeg

There are three abandoned tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (America's first Superhighway) . You can walk or bike through two of them. The third can be accessed by car to view each covered portal when traveling Eastbound only.

Google Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike or PA Pike to Bike.

Quite a bit of history with the road. All tunnels were single tubes and doubled in the mid-late '60's which is when three were bypassed. The bypass of Ray's Hill and Sideling hill was a major reroute and redesign of the Breezewood interchange. It also explains the odd interchange with I-70 there that I never understood when I started driving the turnpike in 1980.

You can save over 10.00 on an end-to-end drive with a transponder instead of using cash. Cash customers pay for the toll attendants.

Must have breakfast at a Waffle House while you're down there. At most exits on the main Interstate Highways.....

#609 8 years ago
Quoted from nman:

Now bonus points if you can find a Huddle House to eat at
The Waffle House cartel has nearly run them out of a lot of areas.

From a very recent visit to Huddle House #791 in New Haven (Ft. Wayne) Indiana.

Then again, Waffle House was not that big in Indiana. Some will recall when they were named "Waffle 'n Steak" to get around a legal issue up until about ten years ago.

Anyone remember Toddle House? I remember eating at one in Bloomsburg, PA in the mid '80's.

Quoted from flynnibus:

VW rental? Don't see those that often. Call your rental place and if there is a one nearby they could allow you to swap.

I rent them all the time. My preferred nameplate at National. I try to have a Beetle reserved and waiting for me on my advance notice trips. I get Passats & Jettas the majority of the time though.

#613 8 years ago

Fannie Farkle's was an Amusement Operator of the year (Named by AMOA) awhile back.

#651 8 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

The roads and infrastructure seem to be a lot better down here, some places we've been up north I've been worried the whole car would disappear down the potholes, they were so bad.
Come down for a visit!
rd

Few to no road deicing chemicals are used there. Also weight limits are lower on the highways. They are higher on the higher, even numbered interstates due to steel mills and other factories producing heavy stuff.

#702 8 years ago
Quoted from oldskool1969:

But is he dead? I swear I saw him surfing yesterday!

He has been spotted more than once (long after his supposed death) at one of the McDonalds restaurants in Kalamazoo. Maybe he will make it over to Pinball at the Zoo later this week or one of the attendees will see him if they stop in for a Big Mac on their way to the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.....

You know you are less than 80 KM from Dyess, Arkansas.

Based on your pictures from downtown Nashville, I think you know who one of Dyess' most famous residents was......

Guess #1 ... The Bandit? Snowman? Beaufort T Justice?
Guess #2 ... Johnny Cash.

Scratch the Nashville pics; I was thinking about pinball. Gene Williams worked for Bally in Field Service & Training when the industry switched over from EM's to SS pins.
