That pizza looks great! But we went for the classic Coney Island option today.

Came to Coney Island twice in 2006 to reside the Cylone and it was out of action. Today finally the Cyclone was working and we got to have a ride. It must have blown people's minds when it opened in 1927.

Rode it for the first time in 1979. Do they offer re-rides for $5.00? IIRC, it was $3.00 back then and re-rides were $1.00. Last time I rode it I think it was $6.00 to ride. Today it's $10.00 US.

Yep, $10 a ride today. Didn't see a price for a re-ride.

We also rode on the new Thunderbolt. Very cool new coaster. Also $10 a ride. There was an old wooden coaster also called Thunderbolt that stood in the same spot until it was demolished in 2000.

Coney Island is a funny sort of place .. Sort of full of old glories from its hey-day in the early 1900s. Today it is still functioning, and there were some people around and riding on the rides, but it's still pretty run down.

I took a photo of this building opposite Nathan's in 2006 and said it would make a cool apartment conversion. 10 years later, it's still sitting there. Amazing nobody has ever done anything with it.

Check out the "Coney Island palm tree" too ...

Wow! I guess I'll stop bitchin' about my $200 Universal annual pass.

Quoted from mcluvin:

Sorry, typo ... It was $10 a ride, same as Cyclone.

$200 a year for Universal is cheap ... I think a Disneyland Annual pass is now like $1000 bucks. Insane. Isn't Six Flags like $100 a year and you can go to all the Six Flags parks around the country?

rd

EDIT ... Just checked, indeed the dearest Annual pass for Disneyland is $1049 USD. The cheapest option is $600 USD. F**k the mouse.

#308 8 years ago

My parents rode that Parachute Jump ride on their Honeymoon in 1949. I remember seeing it abandoned in 1979. And a few years later with my dad. He recalled riding it and the fun it was.

#309 8 years ago

$10 is still a bit rich for me. Take a family and poof! there goes $40 or $50. Universal Orlando is a great deal. They used to offer buy a year get a year free, but there is so much more to do now. I don't feel bad about it. The concerts alone are worth it.

We rarely do Disney as it ain't cheap and really not as good as Universal IMO. But the best time to do it is when they are doing Very Merry Christmas. It's a not so secret secret they will let you in if you show up a few hours before it is supposed to start. Once it does start they kick everyone else out of the park. You can ride everything you wanted to ride in just a few hours. Before and after ride the monorails and check out all their hotels' Christmas decorations. It's about the only time Disney truly seems magical to me.

But you get a really cool RFID wristband... It can be programmed to open your hotel room door if staying at a Diss knee resort.

A small price to pay for the CONvenience.

#314 8 years ago
Quoted from bflagg:

Send in the clowns.....

They're up next.

First band was SYKA, a hard rock band with a lady singer. She could belt it out ... They did a good cover of Crimson and Clover.

Second up was US Americans, sort of an Alt-rock vibe. They did a cool cover of The Ocean. Lead singer was more of a performer than a world beating vocalist.

#316 8 years ago

Mac Sabbath were pretty cool!

Ronald did some stage diving at the end. \m/

Reasonable crowd here for Mac Sabbath. Mainly an older crowd though ... In NZ the crowd would be 18-40. Id say here it was 35-60. Maybe all the young dudes in NYC are listening to crappy DJs instead.

Springsteen ... Snore.

Yep, Mac Sabbath played only Sabbath songs.

Deep dark in the depths of Manhattan, NYC, clandestine meetings of Pinball ladies occur.

This group of ladies are called Belles and Chimes.

Today we got invited to attend and compete. Well, the ladies did. No men can play. Today's event was in a secret fabric warehouse location...

So me, Greg Poverelli and Crazy Levi grabbed some beers and watched.

Also, I learnt that bags of popcorn need to be three times the size of a human head.

Good luck to both of you in the upcoming IFPA 13 .

Mwahahahahaha!
Is the short stint with my Stars still giving you nigHTMAres Danni?
Drain, drAIN, DRAAIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNN!!! (And then, drain some more! )
I wouldn't worry about it too much though.
Your poor Mom and Dad (Roadie) went several days straight last trip trying to tame it, but fell short in cutting the cosmic high score mustard.

They say in space, no one can hear you scream...but on Stars, they sure can hear you cuss!

Loving the green shirt, Danni and Dave!

Speaking of which, we're sold out of most sizes...time to reorder! Or redesign, with our upcoming move around the corner, no longer on Chicago Street!

It's Dannis favorite shirt ... She's wearing it at most pinball comps.

Thanks again for the kind gifts.

Good luck with that move! Moving a large amount of pins is hard work ...

Today we got the subway down to Harlem and walked back down to 36th via Central Park.

Central Park is huge. 800 odd acres from memory. It was a stroke of genius by the city planners to leave this huge area in the middle of Manhattan.

1000s of people out walking, running and biking through the park.

That's a pretty fat squirrel.

That's a pretty fat squirrel.

Squirrels ahoy in Central Park. Thousands of em. Plus a rat. And turtles in The Reservoir too!

It was a nice day out yesterday, but a real chilly wind. We had to head in for a Thai curry to heat up!

It was a beautiful day here in Indiana yesterday as well. I took the top of the Jeepster and just drove through the country. A little rain shower popped up but it was no big deal.

A rat is a very thing to find indeed in NYC. Consider yourself blessed!

Came across to Hoboken, New Jersey on the PATH train. Man, this place is quiet compared to the chaos just across the Hudson River!!

Fiona and Danni wanted to go to Carlos Bakery, the bakery of the Cake Boss guy on the Food Channel. There were dozens of people, mainly tourists I'm guessing, queued up for his cakes. You had to get a number at the door and wait for the number to be called (common for you USA folks but extremely uncommon in NZ). About half an hour wait to get your cakes.

Danni got a cheesecake and we both had a cannoli. Cannoli is a pastry thing with creamy stuff inside. Not bad ...

Quoted from rotordave:

Very overrated bakery items IMO, especially for the price! You can get better at local stores anywhere but you cant get the whole "I was at the bakery that is on TV" experience which people in the States absolutely love!

Manhattan on a cloudy day is better picture than Hoboken on a clear sunny day!!!
