There is a B tournament - the top 24 players ranked outside the top 2,000 who do NOT qualify for A will play in the B finals.
There's also women's tournament which will be qualified the same way.

Genuinely curious as to the thoughts here. Personally I think that someone who finishes 37th most of the time could rightfully aspire to qualify in a tournament like this. There’s also a classics tournament.

But to come up with something less self-servingly arbitrary, looking at the 2017 New York State Championship IFPA rankings (https://www.ifpapinball.com/rankings/custom_view.php?id=99), no one in the top 50 is lower than 1255 overall. The average rank of those from 51-100 is 1474.64 today. Maybe 1500 is actually pretty reasonable!
There needs to be some sort of cutoff because otherwise you have a similar problem: players like me get demoralized because B division will just be A division playoffs part 2.
The trick is figuring out what's fair and/or meets your goals. Who do you think the B division should be for? Define that then come up with some sort of metric. You're never going to make everyone happy, but as long as you can defend your choice, hopefully you'll cut down on the complaints.
Sorry if I came off as being overly critical! I was just trying to give a perspective to consider.
Throwing in my 37th average finish was probably a mistake because it includes a bunch of small local tournaments as well as large events like PAPA and Pinburgh, so doesn't really give an accurate picture. Do I aspire to qualify in A division? Absolutely. But experience shows that I'm much more likely to eke out qualifying for B division playoffs, if anything. Especially if the event is going to draw top players from across the country. Based on that, I personally find a cutoff of 2000 to be a disincentive to travel.

I'm in the top 2000, but my average finish is 37th. Given the caliber of players in the NYC area, I know my chances of qualifying for the playoffs of A division are pretty slim. Knowing that I don't have a chance to compete in the B division leaves me wondering if it's worth taking time off work to travel when there are lots of other events I could use that vacation time for.
Maybe I'm in the minority (I'm a solid PAPA C-Division player who travels to play in tournaments I have no chance of winning), but if there are others who share my mentality, revenue for the prize pool will actually go down rather than up.

Championship Sunday Tickets to Benefit Project Pinball Charity
Partnership With Project Pinball Will Help Bring Pinball to New York Area Children’s Hospitals
(New York, NY) - Never Beef Productions (NBP) is proud to announce a partnership with Project Pinball, a non-profit charity organization that places pinball machines in children’s hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses to introduce therapeutic benefits to kids. Project Pinball currently has placed 32 pinball machines in 28 children’s hospitals across 16 states.
To kickstart the partnership, proceeds from all spectator tickets sold on May 20 to watch the Main Division Finals on Championship Sunday, when the New York City Pinball Champion is crowned, will benefit Project Pinball. Purchasing a ticket grants entry to watch the finals at the fabulous 9th floor penthouse ballroom of the Skyline Hotel. Seating and a large projector viewing screen will be provided so spectators can stay on top of the action. It’s so strange to me to see a few people who aren’t affected and likely have no interest in tournament pinball are sniffing around for insignificant dirt and missing the big picture:
140 registered players, every single one of whom had a great time. It’s not hyperbole to say it’s the best pinball tournament I’ve ever been involved with, and I’ve been a steady participant on the circuit for 4 years now.
An amazing experience, not without hiccups, and many lessons learned. Not for the feint of heart or lazy, but I’d recommend that anybody who thinks they can contribute to the tournament circuit seriously consider getting some friends together and launching an event of your own.
You can create the event you’ve always wanted to attend, and you can do it the way you want, with the people you want, and with the character you want.
The work can’t be understated, and your resolve and even your personal relationships may be tested. But you can achieve a true sense of boom that you’d never otherwise even be able to understand.
After a couple days of sleep we’ll have more to say and more to show. Until then thanks again to everyone who was involved, without exception, but none more than Paul Caras, Tim Sexton, and Austin Smith for helping create an experience I’ll truly never forget.

Thanks! I’m not really the Tournament Director, I was involved in show production, providing games, press, Emceeing, and other details. But I believe our prize package was determined on percentage of tickets after our (considerable) expenses.
The top prize in A was $1,500 - served up by virtue of awesome (of course, as Everything was awesome) giant check. I believe this and our other cash payouts puts us in the top percentile of other large pinball tournaments - better than any tournaments I’ve ever been to that weren’t held in Pittsburgh.
Our A and B finalists received fantastic plaques and trophies along with some of the best prizes I’ve seen donated by sponsors - including gift certificates from the NYC community’s important small local businesses like modern pinball, world famous rock fantasy, and Jackbar, and the big boys really stepped it up too - with SIX gorgeous signed playfields from Jersey Jack (these things just kept showing up in the mail!!!) and a $500 Game Of Thrones topper from Stern - incredibly won by 4th place finisher Steven Bowden who happens to have a tournament-won NIB GOTLE he has sitting in a box at home, waiting for an excuse to come out and play!
Pinstadium also sent us a great top of the line UV kit for a prize, and a big shout out to brickhouse Projects for their work on our awesome (of course) teaser trailer that kicked this thing off 6 months ago, and pingraffix who came through at the last minute with our awesome (of course) banners and signs, as well as their cool light up cabinet mods that were featured on the AFM On stream for much of the show, and of course Pinaholic for providing games that were featured in key matches the entire Championship Sunday.
We also had the first ever Jjp POTC featured in a tournament, as a B finals contest game, to go with the Hobbit they brought for women’s and Dialed In LE for Main.
Proud moment having my dad and Jersey Jack help me with my cuff links like it was prom night.
Last but not least thanks to G Fuel, who donated product to every single contestant and spectator. I love the stuff , and it got me back in the game on Saturday night after 3 days of no sleep - powering me to 4th place finish in Classics in the only tournament I had time to play in.

Looks like if you plan to do it next year it will make the top WPPR cut offs for a circuit event as well!
They appear to have a restrictive and iron-clad policy on that, as it seems that we won’t be eligible for circuit until I’m well into my 50s. I wish they’d reconsider as this is clearly and obviously a circuit-quality event.
It’s not about whoppers as there are no requirements about that - it’s rather an arbitrary time period before an event can be considered.

We tried to do something different than has been done in the past, and give people who don’t attend these, ever, something to enjoy. The live commentary, intros, and music were part of that, and I’m veey proud of our contestants - not a single person complained about distractions or the noise. I think this is an important thing that all major tournaments need to work on - having a dark, bland room with MAYBE a tv screen set up with a lag and no attempts to provide commentary or entertainment value beyond hardcore pinball tournament types just doesn’t cut it if you want to invite people to watch.

To put NYCPC on the Circuit . . . you have to kick an event off the list, so we have a completely objective measurement as to how we determine "how good" an event is.
As far as discouraging organizers from going all out to make new big events, I would hope that nobody looks to the Stern Pro Circuit as their primary motivating factor to start such an event. I've been organizing new big events for over 20 years, and my motivation has always been to simply provide players with a kick-ass experience and grow the reputation of the event from there. 3 years is hardly a blip on the radar if a group of organizers plans on running their event for 10, 15, 20+ years.
This is a correct and fair assessment. I attend many big tournaments whether they are Circuits or not and I helped throw a tournament that wasn't hurt by it's lack of circuit status. As far as I can tell being part of the Stern Circuit doesn't bring you much of anything, besides (duh!) Stern circuit points.
I understand Magfest has or will lose it's circuit status? Doesn't matter to me, I'll be there.

The intros were dope but I think next time we get practice out of the way so we can go straight from the hype into the finals! The event was a huge success but we are already making notes and discussing how we can improve it.

Or maybe it won't even happen. This shit is a lot of work. Official announcement one way or the other within a month or so hopefully. Working on some stuff now to make this happen.
