Well, I never realized a Metallica mallard mod existed before this week.
    Brilliant!

    Quoted from Aurich:

Yeah, it's a nice little thing to write, but let's be honest about what really happens. Big Pinball Company sends Robin an email, and he removes something because he doesn't want to rock the boat. I know because it happened to my post, anyone remember my Smaug cabinet mockup? It wasn't breaking any rules, it was just embarrassing and inconvenient for JJP. So it was deleted from Pinside.
Whatever, life goes on, but this notion that not selling ads somehow protects freedom is nonsense. Clearly that's not the case. If you can't stand on principle over something that small then you don't really have any credibility on the matter.
Honestly I wish Pinside would just run ads and get it over with. Make money! It's okay with me, this site takes a lot of work. All this monetization stuff is just f**king up the site though. I'm still annoyed about the banning of posting images in the local sale threads, all to try and force people through the classifieds section so Pinside can get their cut. I've got a heart+, I donate and support, and that kind of pettiness is lame.

totally agree Aurich and have experienced the pm along with the take it down as Stern is not happy thing, mind you pinside guys were in their rights but it does happen.

I think the ebay style ads loose the personal and interactive side of things and I won't be selling via them as there are issues will stock control, not personal etc. I much prefer when you have a development thread and people chime in and people banter about ideas, thoughts and advice as well as their satisfaction with their mod it then relieves those interested that you are reliable and trustworthy.

not meaning to chime in on anyone particular but I noticed alot of ads from ulekstore - I don't know these guys, or if they are pin collectors, have threads or cashing in on the opportunities of sales - personally I like to support the thread starter pinhead modders ...

each to their own and it only seemed a little while ago I donated then the + donation came in and I donated again as like being able to send photos and wanted to support some more.

maybe like Aurich said but have all big pinball businesses sponsor the site and help fund it but have the adds and promotion in one tab section and not through the forum site so people can go to a one stop shop for forum or compare pinball suppliers in a seperate area. Maybe you could then take this further and aid the pinheads with a pinball part search and supplier comparison so then it might make the big companies that little more competitive all on one site along with the forum but with the strict condition that when they pay a sponsorship they have no control of topics in the forum section ?????

    #153 3 years ago

    I have a few ideas:

    1) If you don't like the ads and just want to complain, go somewhere else or start your own pinball forum site if you think it's that easy.
    2) If you don't like the ads, don't contribute, and love to complain, then shut-up!
    3) If you don't like the ads but love the site, contribute and disable them.
    4) If you don't like the ads just ignore them and get on with your life, and keep enjoying the 99.9% of Pinside you like.

    Some usernames match so well

But yeah, I've chosen #4! Hopefully this is the last of "these" kinds of updates. Reminds me of the whole video gaming conundrum, except with better reasoning.

For another perspective, I just set up a Pinside storefront. I have been selling pinduino lighting kits for various games, mostly through people seeing a video of it somewhere and then PMing me to ask for one. The process would then be me saying how much they were, links to instructions, sending my paypal info, etc. Basically, a lot of time going back and forth with people (which I am fine with). To ease the process, I started an Etsy store, but haven't had much traction with it to help with the payment. Yesterday, I decided to try to set up a Pinside store. Within 20 minutes the shop was up and seeing its ads on linked games happen instantly was really neat. I give Robin and the Pinside team very high marks for their implementation and ease of use. Thanks for hard work and happy to have a portion of my sales get passed along to keep this site running.

    - Pinside automatically charges a fixed percentage over the order total, our platform fee, to the shop in question.

    What is the fixed percentage?

    Quoted from jrivelli:

    What is the fixed percentage?

It's 5% plus the normal paypal fee.

Yes, that does occasionally happen on Pinside, but not always.

In fact, "This one time, at band camp..."

    Quoted from Aurich:

Um, this isn't Rick's forum, why is he dictating rules here about publicly posted information? Rick man, run your site however you like, but once you post pics to the internet that's that baby.
    Looking good!

    Quoted from Razorbak86:

Yes, that does occasionally happen on Pinside, but not always.

    It's always a case-by-case basis.

Out of respect for designers who are not ready for a public reveal, and when something was obviously leaked without permission when the source looks like it came from a spy camera of some sort, then sometimes it's not appropriate.

One of our rules is "Be respectful of the industry". However....

As far as I'm aware, it's fair use for purposes such as criticism, comment, and news reporting, especially if it was released publicly by a primary source (as opposed to leaked trade secrets that could be potentially damaging).

    #160 3 years ago

Let's be clear, my image wasn't leaked. It wasn't even based on a rumor. It was my creation as part of a discussion. Robin deleted it because Jack asked him to. I know the whole story, because I talked to Robin and Jack.

Look I don't care about me here. Big effing deal, my mockup got taken down. But you can't say you're all about independence when you're clearly already happy to try and make the manufacturers happy over your users.

I like Robin, I like Pinside. But you gotta call it like you see it.

    #161 3 years ago
    Quoted from Aurich:

But you can't say you're all about independence when you're clearly already happy to try and make the manufacturers happy over your users.

Being independent means Robin chooses which battles he fights based on whatever standard he sets himself. He's not picking battles based on financial pressure exerted by a paying advertiser. If Robin deems something to be immoral, disrespectful, pornographic, whatever, then he independently decides to moderate it. If someone puts pressure on him he has no obligation whatsoever to act.

I dont think anyone can argue, after reading through Pinside threads, that Robin tries to make manufacturers happy over users.

There may be instances where he has had to make a decision either way, but im sure that has been based on carefully weighing up both sides.

    #162 3 years ago
    Quoted from RWH:

I think you may underestimate the amount of money it takes to maintain this ever growing site; the enormous amount of time given freely from the top (Robin) right down to the mods. I also don't want to seem as if I'm dismissing your right to block, donate, or simply state your opinion. I merely think that we all benefit from this site so I'm "in" for whatever it takes.

I echo these same sentiments. I go back far enough to remember when there were not very many people on this site. Most were over at RGB. The crowd here was small enough that Robin gave me a call one morning to discuss where I lived, the games I had, and various other things. Pinside was in its infant stages and I think he only worked at it on his free time from his job.

This thing morphed into a super-sized web site and that's because it is one of the most beautiful and well constructed web sites on the entire web (if web sites can be beautiful). So, perhaps it got too big for Robin to do part time and he has made the decision to let it make him an income. It is his creation and he has spent a tremendous amount of hours (years) keeping it going. There's a heck of a lot of help, info, and knowledge . . . even 'entertainment' on here.

I actually looked over some of the ads the other day looking for a mod for my TWD. The joke was on me though, because I couldn't figure out how miraculously ads for TWD mods were showing up on the TWD thread I was reading!

The ads don't bother me at all. I DID see by the ads and other recent things here that Pinside is turning into a business somewhat. Still, if that's what it takes to keep this thing going, how can I be against it? We should be thankful for Robin bringing this great gift to us. We don't have to buy anything. We don't have to pay a membership fee. And we are not forced to make a donation. I say it is his baby, so let him rock it.

    I just did. So ...

I'm done with talking about this, my point has been stated, and I think Robin should make his money. I think he should take ads. I think he should stop doing stupid things to his readers, like stop them from posting photos in local threads.

    Question for Robin or mods:
When i go to checkout of the market, i select pay with paypal and log in but then it asks me for credit card info. Any other site where i checkout with paypal, I just log into paypal and bam everything is done and paid for. How come here i have to give out more credit card info? glitch/bug?

    Requests:

    1. As a seller having customer email address is super handy when we ship so we can include the tracking information.

    2. A notice at the top of pinside that I have pending/open orders would be nice as well

    great ideas.
As a seller; I'd want some kind of analytics to see how well a specific product is performing on pinside.

Hmmm. Let see how this goes.

    #170 3 years ago

Now that things have calmed down a bit, how about if there was a wish list for the shop items for our profile? We wouldn't have to hunt for some of those things as the shop items grow. It wouldn't need to be public, just for our own use. My kids want to know what to get me for Christmas and it would be cool if I could just hand them my Pinside Shops wish list. You know ... things that I REALLY want.

    1. Note that you can also send the tracking number using the internal shop PM system when you change the order status to 'shipped'. That's the intended way.
    2. We have just added this, good suggestion.

This is in the works. We will focus on shop reviews first and after that on some kind of reporting system.

Great idea, we put this on our list of things to work on. The list will be private, but we consider adding a feature that you can share it with others using a public link (with a key so only the people that have the link can view your list). This way you can easily share it with friends and family.

Just checking back: I have just made a small donation to Pinside, not to disable ads (again), but to show my thanks. I appreciate what you guys do regardless of my stance on some things and wanted to show it.

Although all countries do not celebrate Thanksgiving, we do here tomorrow and I am thankful for Pinside and everybody on it!

Ya, but I use stamps.com (commonly used as a shipping tool). There is a slot to enter the email address so stamps.com emails tracking and also severe delays due to weather etc. I'm not going to want to pay pinside an extra 5% plus go into the stamps.com print history and find the tracking to paste into a PM, its very cumbersome.

It's very common(100% of the time?) to provide an email for ordering online. I would really urge this again because it's far easier for Paypal disputes to show emails, not a pinside message that paypal won't recognize.

We've added 1 product and it's sold on here so far, which is great. However, we are probably holding off until the shipping API is added and until we get the email address for shipping. We don't email spam anyone. We send 1 per year at Black friday, that's it. In fact, we won't use the emails here for that since we only use it from website orders. we get like 1 unsubscription per year.

    #174 3 years ago

Does the 5% fee cap out at a certain point per product? I have a product we want to list (once shipping flat rate is updated) that goes for $2500.

    #175 3 years ago

Also, the addresses don't come through properly. There is no state listed.

    It goes

    Customer Name
    123 St name
    95867, City Name
    United States

    It should go:
    Customer Name
    Street address
    City, St Zip Code

    For proper mailing format

    #176 3 years ago

Based on my read through this thread I updated my shop items so none of the primary images is a circuit board... Sure they look great to me and I know exactly what they do, but I'm probably in the minority with that opinion. What I've got there now looks a lot less cluttered and should be simpler for the casual viewer to comprehend.

We made some changes to the order overview to better accommodate this. Can you have a look if this better fits your requirements? Btw, you should also be able to use the shipping API of PayPal now if desired (was a request by another shop).

    Thanks for the feedback.

Sweet, thanks for these updates. Confirmed they are all showing up properly for the orders I have. Really time saving, appreciate that.

Based on our 1 product added and sales from it thus far you guys are going to do great with this new utility to pay for your site

Request: I actually really like the 3 ads displayed on my phone at the bottom of the page. However, can we make it scroll with a finger swipe? Not auto scroll, but Id like to scroll through and see more products without a page refresh or anything. Maybe a cool way to throw in more products without being any more intrusive

Wow $5 on a $100 seems pretty good for all the stuff Lyonsden listed as all the extra steps that are now skipped using the Pinside shop. I think Robin has done a great addition with this feature.

Absolutely! I'm about to push an update that will fix this Firefox issue.

    #187 3 years ago

I actually like the ads. Great to see machines and mods that I'm potentially interested in right there at the bottom of the page. Anyone who actually finds these ads annoying really needs to get a life. I honestly can't even begin to quantify how much help I've received from pinside members over the last 2-3 years I've been on this site and in return I help others as much as I possibly can. Anything that helps fund keeping this site alive and well is good in my books!

When I clicked on the boxes, to accept order it would not do anything. Clicked many times, turned on and off computer and a few other things, but could not move forward on firefox. Opened page on Explorer, clicked on accept box, worked first time.

I love your market. Very happy with the small fees.

Looks like the number of ads shown on the mobile version has gone from 3 to 4. Now it takes up most of the screen because it's on 2 lines and looks messy. I know this has been fixed before, can you fix it again?

As with any change people tend to resist it at first then some will actually like it down the road and other will learn to live with it. It doesn't matter any time changes are made anywhere it is human nature to find the bad in it at first but over time we all just grow to accept it.

Not to get into politics here but when Trump got elected the stock market was suppose to tank and look at where that is at today. Just one example of people accepting change over time.

    #195 3 years ago

Agreed the doubles lines is annoying. I still vote 3 with scrollable so I can see more ads. EBay does exactly this. I get lost in those ads scrolling by and buy tons of crap lol
