    Hi Pinside,

There's a lot of stuff brewing at PinsideHQ and today one of these brews is ready to be served, steamy hot and without milk and sugar!

Grid View combines all sub-forum and user-views into one highly customizable page!
Today I'm adding a cool new format for the Pinside Forum front page, called "Grid View"!

Grid View groups topics into boxes by sub-forum or by user-specific view. It aims to give you a wider view of all that's happening on Pinside, and to help you keep track of your favorited/visited/posted/etc topics.

Grid View combines all sub-forum and user-views into one highly customizable page!

The grid view in all its glory

Whoah!!! Change! I'm freaking out so much right now.
Take it easy, Pinside friend. Grid view aims to complement the existing topics list view, not replace it. You can switch between the old (list view) and the new (grid view) at any time. Altough I'm sure you'll love Grid View, once you get to know it. Read on and I will explain how to switch between the formats.

Phew, okay so what's the purpose of Grid View?
Glad you asked. Grid view aims to do a bunch of things:
    - Give you a more diverse view of everything that takes place on Pinside
    - Keep new topics in sight for longer
    - Show your user-relevant topics ("views"), all on one screen
    - Allow each Pinsider to customize their grid/experience
    - Provide a quick way to search for topics
    - Make you coffee when you're tired.

Sound good? Let's dive in. To better explain what's going on, I've prepared this little instructional image:

    Grid view, explained

(Yeah, I know. I should probably work on my Photoshop skills.)

Let's start with arrow 1: the main front page layout switcher that allows you to have either grid view or the good ol' list view.

Arrows 2a and 2b. As you can see, this new grid design revolves around the separation of topics into different boxes. Boxes can be based on the topic sub-forum, e.g. "restoration" (arrow 2b) or by a user view that pertains to you, like "topics in which you posted" (arrow 2a). Examples of user views are: topics in your favorites, topics you posted to, topics you viewed in the past, topics linked to games in your collection (or wishlist) etc.

Moving on to the top right, you can see arrow 5 points to the column count selector. If you're on a big desktop computer, you can easily set the column count to 3. It's pretty darn cool if you do that. On smaller screens, the 2 column count is probably the best choice. When your screen is too small, the column count selector gets hidden and the count is always set to 1.

Arrow 6 points to an important choice, so pay attention here! The "Hide Idle" switch allows you to hide all topics that don't have any new posts in them. Very simple way to save screen estate, scroll less, save brain cells on scanning thread titles that don't have anything new for you. Etc. However, if you're looking for a topic and can't find it: check the hide idle switch!

Arrows 3 and 4 is where it gets fun and where you can customize your grid! You can customize a few different things:
    - Re-arrange the order of the boxes (arrow 4). click this button, then drag and drop the boxes into the desired order.
    - Configure appearance and topic count for each box (arrow 3)
    - Disable sub-forums or views you are not interested in (arrow 3, the X icon)

Rearrange the grid into the order you desire

Best of all... All customization is linked to your account and will sync across different browsers!

The quick topic search at arrow 7 allows you to quickly filter all boxes for specific topics. It currently only searches through topic titles but I might add some extra "quick filters".

Finally, the "Load more" link at arrow 8 allows you to load more topics from that box. And the "go to view / sub-forum" link at arrow 9 will bring you into the view or sub-forum for a full-screen list.

    ...

There you have it! I hope you like this new format.

Got suggestions? Let me know. Doesn't it all function (quite) right in your browser? Report it! I couldn't test this on all browsers on all platforms, so your help is appreciated.

    Coffee please!
And now for that coffee... Grid Vieeeew, one coffee please!

Awesome! Appreciate all the hard work you put into Pinside.

    Great feature.....but lots of bugs...

    1) Grid elements can be placed on top of others, which is certainly not intended behavior.
    2) Grid leaves lots of random blank grid space.
    3) Switching from 2 to 3 columns and/or back results in closed up white space (see #2) reappearing.
    4) Switching from 2 to 3 columns makes the 3rd column ads. I get the need for ads but this makes the 3 column option less helpful.

    Chrome (latest), Windows 7.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

Grid View was developed and extensively tested in Chrome (on Mac). I can't imagine Chrome on Mac and Windows differing that much that you would run into all these issues? I will do some testing on Windows (VM) tomorrow, but just to get the obvious out of the way: can this not be caused by any browser add-on/extension you may have installed?

What I appreciate is that you offer updates like this as an option, instead of forcing it on us like most websites. Thanks for that Robin and Martjn.
I like the grid view but as an old white guy I'm pretty stuck in my ways...

    #6 10 days ago

    I like it! Thanks, Robin.

I just checked and one of the files didn't update properly. I corrected that, so sorting/customizing should work properly now.

I will still do some more Windows > Chrome testing tomorrow.

As I said in the announce, the new grid view is not intended to ever replace the 'old' list. They both have their uses. That said, I hope you'll give Grid View a shot as it will make keeping track of new stuff much easier!

    #8 10 days ago

Thanks to Robin and Martjn for making our favorite hangout even bettet!!

    #9 10 days ago

It looks great Robin. It allows me to sort all the posts so I don’t have front page overload.

    #10 10 days ago

When rearranging the grid on mobile, you can only scroll the page with the last few pixels on the right of the screen. If you scroll in the middle it obviously just picks up the topic and moves it. Maybe a tap and hold feature to move topics?

When moving topics on mobile the screen doesn’t auto scroll if you drag off the top or bottom of the visible screen.

    Chrome on iOS 11

    #11 10 days ago

    Wow! So cool, thanks.

One thing. My customised grid is not saving properly. If I leave the site and go back in the columns are sometimes in a different place. This is with Chrome on Windows.

    #12 10 days ago

Love, love, love it! Looks so good. Well done.

    #13 9 days ago

Grid view is fabo. Does it auto refresh content (Windows/Chrome)?

    #14 9 days ago

The boxes do not auto-refresh as that would probably get annoying. However, you can use the arrows icon at the top of any box to refresh its contents manually.

Topic view counters ('green boxes') now refresh every time you return (via back button) from a topic. That also works for the 'old' list view, by the way.

Interesting. To be honest, I never did any extensive testing on grid re-arranging on my mobile. I'll see what I can do, but likely it will involve adding 'drag handles' or giving you more scroll space on the sides in arrange/customize mode.

Keep in mind that we only store the order of the boxes, not their exact locations. The grid will automatically arrange the boxes in this order. This was the only way we could keep the whole thing flexible (also for 1-3 column layout switching).

    #16 9 days ago

This might be silly - but, would you consider having the "hide idle" option be possible per grid item? Like, the "Topics in which you posted" is one where I'd want to see a thread if there was new activity, but other boxes I might want to no hide idle threads.

    #17 8 days ago

On Safari iOS, I keep trying to change the setting in the Topics in Which You’ve Posted grid to sort by recent activity instead of date I last posted. Even though I keep saving my changes, it doesn’t save and returns to default. I haven’t checked whether this happens on my desktop computer yet.

    #18 8 days ago

I am liking it, so far.

Please make this thread a sticky and lock it up top.

    #19 8 days ago

Using Chrome/Windows I've noticed that sometimes if I refresh the individual panels on the grid the contents are wrong and don't relate to my profile or activity. For example, I'm currently seeing panels for Favorites, Linked to my Games and Topics Which You Viewed all of which don't relate to me.

Edit. I've just refreshed them again and now it's my content. This could relate to the Pinside tab being inactive and not selected for several hours.

    #20 8 days ago

This continued development of the site is just...so cool, Robin. Thank you!!!

    #21 8 days ago

I think it is an excellent feature. Thanks and well done!

Just confirmed. It does this on Chrome on my Windows desktop too. I really like the new set up, but if my settings don't save, I probably won't use it much. Hopefully, it is an easy bug to fix.

    #23 7 days ago

So THIS is what you've been up to!

    Nice job as always!

    #24 6 days ago

Hidden sub-forums in list view sometimes show up in grid view. I specifically noticed some of the O/T off topic threads showing up in the recent activity area.

    #25 6 days ago

When I see "somebody elses" grid (ie noticeable on Favorites, Recently Viewed, Linked to Games panels), I see a different selection of tech sub-forums from mine too so perhaps related.

It just happened again and the Linked to Games seems to be the same as the previous occurrence including Fireball 2 and Fathom (I wish!).

Good suggestion, but that would require quite some changes. I will keep it in mind. If it gets requested by others as well I'll consider adding that.

Much more coming soon! We've been developing some stuff in parallel (bad idea) and are now sitting on some cool stuff that's nearly finished.

That's a tough one. The sub-forums hide settings do not currently sync between grid and list view. I do want to implement this but it is quite tricky. Sorry!

Thanks. I *think* I fixed this issue now. It's a bit difficult because it seems to only happen rarely.

    Love the feature.

I apologize in advance if it already exists and I missed it, but I would advocate for a feature to have a box for all the on fire or hot topics. That way I could just jump on and see what the flavor of the minute is and get my daily dose of drama from all over Pinside at a glance.

    #28 6 days ago

    Nice feature!

It would be great if you could scroll through topics in each grid section"window" instead of having to hit Load More.

    #29 6 days ago

If I try clicking "Load more" in one of the windows that already is displaying all of the Topics available in the window, the refresh animation runs and runs.

So in the case listed below, I have only started 8 topics, all of which are displayed. If I hit "Load more," it appears to try to refresh indefinitely.

    What browser?

Are there any browser extensions that might be interfering?

Same here on Chrome. Actually, if you keep loading a panel then the same happens once all of the contents are displayed and you attempt to "Load more"

A lot of my grids read like below or similar
"You have disabled X out of 1 sub-forums" where X is the correct number but I don't understand the 1

    e.g.
All Pinball - "You have disabled 7 out of 1 sub-forums in this forum. Hit to configure."
Electro Mechanical - "You have disabled 2 out of 3 sub-forums in this forum." But there are 5 sub-forums?

To be clear, I think this new grid is great just feeding back minor stuff I notice.

    #35 4 days ago

Is it possible to hide the topics you already have read (shown as gray 0) ? Would make it easier to skim the list for other interesting topics to read....

    #36 4 days ago

Kudos Pinside masters. Robin, I love your creative thinking and might just throw another donation your way cuz I think the work to make Pinside better is worth a few bucks.

I like the new grid view and I now use it instead of the list view. Nice work! One item for the wish list: I would like to customize the view so the Super Stickies pane is gone entirely, or at least have that pane comply with my Hide Idle setting.

    #39 1 day ago

This is the best new feature I have seen implemented on Pinside in the time I have been here. It encourages me to look at, and stumble upon, topics that I would not find otherwise much easier. Well done.

    #40 1 day ago

Best feature ever, like it very much. Thanks!!!!!

    #41 1 day ago

Now that my settings properly save, I’m using this all the time. Thank you, Robin.

Well, here is something I inquired about a couple times in the past, but never received an answer to. I had bookmarked a Pinside URL that isolated a view of those threads which I had posted in, hierarchically arranged with most recent post / reply activity. It was an extremely useful feature ! This bookmark worked perfectly for quite some time, and then for whatever reason ceased working. Did the forum software change at some point, making this no longer possible ? Or is there an updated URL version of that View I need to switch to as a browser bookmark ? Can someone please enlighten me on that score.
