3 games at the PHOF have this now and during the weekend I was there of Halloween I didn't see any resets on them, these 3 were supergames too!

#252 4 years ago

My No Good Gofers is still holding up with 0 complaints of restarts.

The day I shipped a few to the PHOF was a proud moment for me. In my eye it's an honor to be in there.

After I checked everything rkahr mentioned before for my JM, rkahr sent me a different board to try and I haven't had a problem with it, after a few hours of playtesting.

It bears mentioning in this topic that the C2 capacitor on the driver board should be checked since it is on the 12V line and has started going bad for some people: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/psa-wpc-driver-board-c2-leak#post-2045669

I started having the double flipper flip reset on my World Cup Soccer @ Video Game Rescue,
fortunately I had just ordered one of these a few days ago and was prepared!
A swift install and my game was up and ready to play and earn!

After testing one on my NGG on location a few months I told Tim to just do it while I was there!
I was happy to know later that 3 super games had them and have heard of no reset issues since!

Hey all,

Wanted to let everyone know I will have a small vendor space at the Texas Pinball Festival next month. This will be my first show beyond driving distance... aka my first show outside Pennsylvania. If you're going to the show stop by and say hello. If you're not going to the show, well, you should be! If I can fly down from Virginia certainly you can make the trek as well...

Just got my daughter board Monday and installed into HS2, haven't had a reset yet.

#262 4 years ago

Hi, Received my daughterboard last week but just got round to installing it in my Bride of pinbot. Had a reset problem when first switched on which would gradually get less and less over the course of half an hour. Installed the daughterboard and the machine won't boot at all. 12v Digital test point is now reading 7.5v as well. Does this point to a problem with my 12v circuit or with the daughterboard? Any advice welcome! Thanks

Hi be77amy,

Both your 5 volt and 12 volt digital need attention. Please take another look at http://www.kahr.us/index2.html - the four sections there explain how the load on the 5v supply is reduced by transferring the MPU load to the 12v digital supply... you've correctly surmised your 12v supply isn't healthy enough to take the daughterboard load. I would bet that without the daughterboard installed you would see fluctuation in the 12v digital supply when running the "all lamp test" in the game's software and those fluctuations will rise and fall with each flash of the lamps.

And of course, PM or email me if you want to return your board.

I seem to have Isolated the reset problem down to something on J115 as when I disconnect this plug I no longer get resets. Also when I reconnect J115 and disconnect J119,120 and 121 I still get resets so would I be right in suspecting one of the 5 triacs could be the issue? if so how are these tested?

#265 3 years ago
Quoted from be77amy:

doubt the triacs are the issue - I had a similar experience with my PZ (ref question 5 in the credit dot article from last year - http://creditdotpinball.com/2014/04/26/tech-wpc-resets-and-the-wpc-mpu-daughterboard/ ). I think the only links between those circuits and the +5 is via the zero cross and the grounds themselves on the PDB. Further, the 19 steps in Pinwiki's reset isolation do not list the triacs as an area of concern...

Quoted from be77amy:

I seem to have Isolated the reset problem down to something on J115 as when I disconnect this plug I no longer get resets.

I've had a problem with a PDB where I tried almost everything, it also pointed towards GI.

After a full revision of a powerdriverboard, it still had resets, only when board was warm.
Even with coindoor open and (J901) 50Volt supply disconnected from fliptronicboard, the machine gave resets in switchtest-menu when both flipper buttons were pressed.

Disconnecting J115 (GI ac-in) helped a lot, now only had occasionally resets.
Used an oscilloscope to measure zero crossing in cold and warm board-conditions but appeared stable all the time. Checked every trace and component that was in the warmer areas of the board (Triacs + Q1 + Q2), found nothing.
Finally with active cooling on Q1 LM323K, and everything connected back to normal, the resets now disappeared. Maybe the total load on the transformer plus the production of heat on the board and backbox made Q1 LM323K instable.

In this case, rkahr's daughterboard would have given the solution too.

#268 3 years ago

Had the powerdriver board out looking for faults. Theres a wire soldered on the back from a pin on J115 to a triac but everything else tests ok. No unwanted earths. Put it all back together and resets seem to have dissapeared now! Thinking now that I may have had something shorting to my 0v. See if it comes back in the coming weeks

#269 3 years ago

Anyone else had an issue using these on fishtales? I can't honestly imagine why it would be tied to a particular game, but I've now seen two machines that "crash" after 30 seconds or so when the board is installed, but work fine with it out. The "crash" seems to be 12 volt related, as the DMD shows the typical 12 volts missing line pattern. Otherwise the machine just goes dead.

I ordered, received and installed my daughterboard for my Twilight Zone. No more reset! I'm a happy camper!

Mine was resetting after about 10 minutes of play. I reseated all suspicious connectors, reflow a few connectors on driver board, tightened ground screws but still had reset... The daughterboard saved my life

Thanks Rob!

#272 3 years ago

All,

Part of the bargain at the Kahr household that allowed me to attend TPF was that it couldn't preclude a family Spring Break trip. We leave early Wednesday for Aruba, so anything ordered from my website after 8:00 PM EST 31 March will not ship until 6 April. I've posted a notice on my home page... Sorry for the inconvenience.

My AFM had random resets almost every time while playing - until I installed the Power Fix Daughterboard. Now 2 months later I still haven't seen one single reset on AFM. Thank you very much, Rob!

#274 3 years ago

Changed Headers, Connectors, BR2 and C5, removed Z-Connector and changed VOLT setting (from 220 to 210) on a Twilight Zone. Steady but low voltage (4.97V), reset on every flipping.

Installed this daughter board. Now it's working like a charm.

Thank you. Now I have a pinball again

Aeon, Alby87,

Thanks for the success stories. Don't know if you saw it but last night I announced a slight reduction in international pricing reflecting economies I've achieved in shipping costs. Details here:

I got a re-supply of classic daughterboards just in time - I was down to an inventory of 9 before today's box arrived. Not sure if anyone noticed but I had zero'ed out all the inventory of multi-packs while I was low on inventory... but those are once again available on my site.

Time to do some assembly!

Yes, there are some issues of resetting that this doesn't solve,
but typically in my experience it fixes typical reset issues.

Quoted from HighProtein:

Agreed - specifically, if the 18 volt derivation is weak it can starve the 12 volt line of power. If the 12 volt LM7812 can't drive 12 volts, the daughterboard can't produce the 5 volt for the MPU. Without the 5 volt, the MPU won't run. There's still no magic in the daughterboard - the power has to come from somewhere... The 18/12 almost always can deliver but there are cases where it just can't.

I'm nearing 1500 daughterboards delivered - and tons of fun success stories (some in this thread!).

I have been buying a steady stream of these daugherboards and I can't say enough good about them. They are now mandatory for any STTNG or TZ in either mine or my Dad's location as those seem to like to reset no matter what we have tried. I also now have one in my CFTBL. I had to replace that one at the beginning of an Ohio League session last weekend. At this point I'm contemplating just putting one of these in all my remaining pre-WPC-95 games. Maybe that is overkill, but I'm tired of hearing at the beginning of a league or party "Hey Kyle, X is resetting on us" when it was previously working fine before the crowd showed up.

If there were an Oscars for pinball products this product would get my vote. Thanks Rob!

Fortunately, I took the opposite approach. One day, I turned on my STTNG and started a game. First flip and it reset. Instead of spending the normal time troubleshooting the problem or changing all the "normal suspects", I hopped on the internet and ordered a daughter board.

Arrived, installed in a couple of seconds, and no more resets. If I were operating WPC games, they would be installed in every one of them!

#285 3 years ago

My AFM was resetting. I did the BR replacements, all new caps, new cables. Nothing. Got one of these boards, nary a reset since.

Good enough for me!

#286 3 years ago

Can't say enough good things about these products.
I have them in my Addams Family and Twilight Zone as well as the new volume pot knobs in my Firepower and Barracora.

#291 3 years ago

Dr. Who still going no resets.

3 weeks later
#292 3 years ago

I (fortunately) haven't needed one of these, so while I knew it existed I hadn't looked at it before. But a friends TOM started doing it, so I took a closer look.

I'm an electrical engineer. Purely out of heat and efficiency reasons (and because I could) I replaced the LM323 linear 5V regulator in my HS2 with a switching regulator. Ideally we'd all do that to save power and reduce heat and (if done correctly) eliminate this reset problem. But it's not a simple fix, it requires removing the driver board, desoldering/soldering, etc. So it's not for everyone.

So when I looked at the solution Rob has created, I realized it is a very clever, well-engineered solution. Rather than addressing the 5V problem on the driver board where the 5V is generated (where I would have started), he's generating a new (highly efficient) 5V from the 12V line, allowing him to put the whole thing on a daughterboard for easy solderless installation. Well-done!

Just wanted to +1 an excellent contribution to our pinball universe.

#293 3 years ago

Met Rob at Pinfest in Allentown, great guy, had one of these kits in my HS2 at the show, game worked perfectly all day.

#294 3 years ago

I'm one of the early adopters of this great product. Still no resets on my TAF, which had all the usual fixes applied to the driver board, but still was resetting constantly. Thumbs up!

If you are in the Atlanta area (or anywhere in the Southeast USA) in late June, stop by and see me at Southern Fried Gameroom Expo. If you are not in that part of the country... you can get a direct flight from just about anywhere to Atlanta and make it to SFGE. Either way, here's a link to the thread announcing that I am going to be at the show: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/sfge-kahrus-circuits-is-attending#post-2447624

I really wanted to get to Pintastic too but scheduling department is describing herself as a "pinball widow"... I'm only getting away with this trip because I can visit family in NC on the way.

The daughter board is awesome, thank you so much. My TZ would only reset if I added my new T.V. Mod and hit both flippers together while playing a game. (New full vid TV is from a pinside as well, also recommend). I have a event coming up and I am setting my pins up for it for people to play.(supervised lmao) And now I can have everything operational until I can get the board work done, on my time. Again thank you

Does anybody know what happens when this device is failing one day? Will it destroy something or will is just stop working?

#298 3 years ago

Ok so I had an alkaline leak on my MPU board, cleaned it up and installed a remote battery holder, but the game's still being a bitch and resetting. Do you think this daughterboard would solve the problem? I was going to get a Rottendog replacement as it most likely looks like the alkaline ate something.

#299 3 years ago

I'm sure the designer will chime in here but I'd guess...

Quoted from ClarkKent:

Does anybody know what happens when this device is failing one day? Will it destroy something or will is just stop working?

Your machine would just act as if it wasn't there. You'll go back to having whatever problems you had before installing the daughtercard.

Quoted from snowvictim:

This daughtercard is not intended as a fix for MPU boards with severe reset problems like yours. It's not going to fix damage caused by battery corrosion. It's only there to fix machines that are generally working but occasionally experience a dip in the 5V, causing a reset.

#300 3 years ago
Quoted from ClarkKent:

You will not destroy anything.

rkahr did a good job and does not trick out and eliminate the watchdog ic. If the resetfix-board should fail, it stops working (because it has failded ) and then the watchdog circuit is activated and resets the CPU. So it is prevented, that the cpu runs - because of too low voltage - into the nirvana, because otherwise coils, flashers, lamps and the components driving these could be damaged.

So no reason, to have any fear.
