but will it have a monkey that you can get your photo taken with?

    #18 7 years ago
    Quoted from PiscisMagnus:

Yes, the VFW has about 50 trained monkeys. Some monkeys are valued higher than others, so photo fees will vary.

sweet! that means that I get to charge people to take their picture with me!

    Quoted from KingBW:

For something "different" go West from the VFW location. The night doesn't have to end after pinball ...
Zukely Lake Tavern - nice large sports bar/grill, about 5 minutes West on M36, usually has live bands of a Blues or Country genre on Friday and Saturday.
Pinckney Pub - bar/grill, about 10 minutes West just off of M36, almost always has live bands mostly of Country genre, sometimes Classic Rock on Friday and Saturday.
Hell Saloon - in Hell! Ya gotta go to Hell! About 15 minutes West, always has lives bands usually of Classic Rock genre, rarely Country on Friday and Saturday. Nice smaller sports bar with good Pizza and some spicy food items (like chili) to go with the Hell theme.
I'll update what genre of bands will be at these locations when the time gets closer. No "cover charge" at any of these locations.

my cousin owns the ZLT (but I haven't been out that way in so long that I completely forgot about it

    Quoted from HighVoltage:

Can someone explain the "unique format" of the "pinball poker" tournament Saturday?

if it's like what we played at the club a few months ago, it was played like this:
each round, you are randomly paired against someone on a random game and you play "best out of 3 games", the winner of the match gets a playing card. each round that you "win", you collect another playing card to use to form your best poker hand (royal flush, straight flush, 4 of a kind, full house, etc..)
after the 1st and subsequent rounds, winners are paired with winners and the loser of the round goes into a 2nd pile to keep the matches interesting and from becoming one-sided. the more rounds that you win, the better (or equal) quality player you will be matched against

when either all of the cards have been dispensed or a set number of rounds played, the person with the best poker hand wins

given that there will probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of 64 players competing, my guess is that 5-6 decks of cards will be used

in past years, the EM tournament has been run "outside" of the regular open house hours on friday. the EM classic tournament starts before the doors open at 6pm and usually finishes up right around the time that the doors open for the regular patrons.

    from the vfwpinball.com website:
    Pinball Tournament (Dominos Pizza sponsored.)
Our tournament will be the “3RD ANNUAL EM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS”, on Friday morning of the show at 10:30am. Note this is *before* the show opens, so there’s no problems with games being used in the tournament while the show is open. The tourney will be a match play, three strikes style event (note could be two strikes, depends on the number of participants.) That is, no qualifying, rounds start right at 10:30am sharp (please get to the show a early to sign in), and each round is about 15 minutes. It’s a best 2 out of 3 style rounds (two names and a game are randomly drawn from a hat, you play best 2 out of 3 games to determine a winner.) If you loose a round, that’s a strike. Three strikes and you’re out (due to time, this may be modified to two strikes.) We keep going until there’s just two people left, and that’s the finals. All play is on EM machines (perhaps some early solidstate chime machines too). Note there is no money to be won, just gift cards and trophies. Dominos Pizza will be providing lunch at noon, and Dominos Pizza gift cards. The winners (first and second place) get completely goofy trophies, and the ability to brag they are the EM World Champs Champs, and pizza gift cards. In addition to the tournament, those that strike out also gain access to the main pinball hall early on Friday! (The show officially opens at 4pm.) For the $20 cost of the tournament, you get tournament play plus lunch plus early entry to the Friday showcase. (Note you must also buy a ticket for the Friday showcase too to get into the show early, though you don’t need a show ticket to compete in the tournament.) Tickets for the Friday tournament (limited to 64 players) are available on the ticket page.

There is also another tournament Saturday night, our “Poker/Pinball Tourney”, at 8pm. This tournament is a unique format and is played on EM and early solid state pinball machines. The show itself closes at 8pm, so this tournament does not interfere the show. No cash prizes, just trophies. Tickets for the Saturday tournament (limited to 64 players) are available on the ticket page. Note a show ticket is not needed to compete. Cost of this tournament is $20

    #120 7 years ago

that's probably a correct assumption, especially considering that the format of that tournament does not "kick out" players after 3 losses

    Quoted from HighVoltage:

Heard of it, but for some reason I assumed it was in California... Going to hit that place for sure, thanks.
    Food recommendations also welcome!

Hey clay what are the dates and cost for tickets. I loved it last year and thinking about getting 6 tickets. The tony

http://vfwpinball.com/?page_id=179 has all of the information
but for the web challenged, it's $30 per ticket for friday and sunday, and $35 per ticket for saturday

    #172 6 years ago
    Quoted from Bax1:

Thanks for adding tickets to Saturday Clay. I have been dragging my feet and just got my ticket. Woooohooo!!!!

thumbs downed you for being such a slacker. I warned you tickets would go fast months ago!

I've got a brand new sheet (standard size) of invisa-glass that I can bring to the show. I bought with the intention of installing it on a machine that never happened

    Quoted from BoJo:

Can anyone from MI going Saturday pick me up some Founders KBS? Bottles around here are impossible to find and when you do it's limited to one per person. Most MI stores should have it now and it will likely be gone by the time of the show. I'm willing to pay for the assistance.

it's already mostly gone (if not completely). it was released last week and most stores were selling the bottles to the tune of $8-10 each. like you've stated, most stores limited the purchase to 1 single bottle per person. a friend of mine drove around to multiple stores to try and get a full 4-pk

Regarding food, is it just my imagination or were hotdogs being grilled on site last year?

not your imagination. the boone bros. do a terrific job of grilling and serving up hot dogs, brats, hamburgers and pulled pork sandwiches

I have 2 brand new sheets of glass that I can bring if anyone is interested. I will be at the show all day both friday and saturday
    1) invisiglass - standard size, still wrapped in butcher paper from abel electronics ($295 or best offer)
    2) pin 2k glass - brand new, still in the original box from bally/williams (huge box!) - $300 firm

I also have a set of RFM ramps, used but in great shape. $100 or best offer

and finally, if anyone wants a run-dmd clock, I will be taking names/info for one last final run. we have one at VFW club house (behind the bar) so that you can see what you're getting

    ps
like last year, I will be providing free pastries to those arriving early on friday for the EM tourney

    Quoted from TheLaw:

Unless it's aboot eating until I'm 60 lbs overweight, divorces, or voting for Trump...I don't think I do much listening to you club members.
I personally wouldn't wear finglerless gloves though...defeats the purpose.

did you not see the fold over mitten part? from what I've seen, you're a chimp flipper at best, so you wouldn't need individual finger sleeves

    #379 6 years ago
    Quoted from steviechs:

The VFW show can now be a 350+ game LIVE tournament!
Check out the new high score feature(s). All #1 scores are updated every 2 minutes on the main list. Opening the Trophy icon will show you a live view of the top 10 scores & will keep track of whatever scores you submit. Obviously this will have to be on the honor system as far as scores go (and not using inappropriate names for submissions).
I will dump all the score entries before Friday so feel free to test submissions and let me know if anything is acting up. Let me know what you think.
    http://pinball.x10host.com/

    no periods for name submission?

along with the new p2k glass ($300 obo), new invisiglass ($295 obo), used RFM ramps ($100 obo) that I will be bringing, I've also got an MEI dollar bill validator (accepts 1s, 2s and new 5s). it works perfectly and includes the necessary cable and the operator's manual ($100)

I will be working the front door with echovictor both friday and saturday if you're interested in any of the above
