I second LOTR, especially if your wife is a Tolkien fan.
In my collection it seems to be one of the more approachable games for beginners while still being fun and challenging for me.
The layered ruleset is fantastic. Excellent implementation of the theme. In my opinion, it's one of the best mode based games out there.
It doesn't have the video presentation of the Hobbit but the color DMD is excellent and the sounds are well done.
