I think I figured out how to explain to The Clown Puke Posse why clown puke LEDs are disliked.

Look at this nice picture of a Ferrari 250 GT in classic Ferrari red. It's a great picture of a beautiful car.

We all know that Ferraris are supposed to be RED!

And RED is a GREAT COLOR for a Ferrari!

So let's turn up the red balance of the picture to make the RED color really POP! Woooooo! POP-EREENO, BABY!

Just look at how I made the RED color POP! And making color POP is the best thing in the whole world!

But that's kind of boring, just making the red color POP.

Let's make it purple! So purple that you can barely tell what it is!

We have achieved MAXIMUM COLOR POPPAGE!!

You might protest that your pin doesn't look like that.

    But it does...

Genuine question... why do people give a shit what others do to their pins? I'm not into clown puke at all, but if someone chooses to do that to their own pin, where's the issue?

    #6 2 years ago

    Fair and interesting analogy.

The reason that I posted this is because I'm shopping for another pin and it occurred to me that there is a 50-50 chance that I'm going to have to replace the LEDs in any pin I get, because Clown Puke has basically taken over the hobby.

The Cirqus Voltare I bought has LEDs in it that are so bright that it hurts your eyes to play it. It's lit up like an airport doing night landings.

It's just a giant waste of money.

Also, I find the whole thing to be just very strange. The Clown Puked pins look HORRIBLE. Sometimes the pin is so puked that you can barely tell what game it is.

Suppose that you came home from work one day and everyone in your neighborhood had painted their house day-glo pink or purple and they were all really happy and shouting about how the color of their house POPS.

You expect to find ONE or TWO people here and there who are THRILLED with COLOR POPPAGE.

But when it's 50% of the people who think that COLOR POPPERY is really awesome,

    it's WEIRD.

    This is a WEIRD thing:

They looked at this hideous mess they created and said, "Oh, yeah, baby. I NAILED it!! I NAILED THE COLOR POP-OSITY LIKE I'M KING POP-O-GIZER!!"

    #10 2 years ago

If I had the purchase price paid for every horrible LED lamp I removed from every game I bought, I could buy another pin. Someday I'll list the bag of colored LED's on eBay.

    #11 2 years ago

And then 50% of pinball owners saw the hideous mess and said, "Ohhhhh yeah. I cannot wait to make my game look that weird and awful."

The Clown Puke phenomenon is weird.

    It's genuinely weird.

How can ANY person think this looks good? How is it possible?

And how can it be that 50% of the people who own pinball machines look at this and then spend $150 to make their own pin look as bad?

    Again,

a.) I don't like the fact that I have to spend $150 on my Cirqus Voltare to de-puke it. And half the pins I buy going forward.

b.) I find the whole clown puke phenomenon to be bizarre. Because the games look amazingly childish and horrible.

Picture if 50% of the people you know suddenly said they love the songs of Yoko Ono. You would find it weird.

Are your impressions of clown puke pins only from photographs? Or have you seen some in person?

LEDs are very difficult to photograph well, and especially in dim lighting. The high intensity of the LEDs makes the camera reduce its exposure, drastically changing the appearance of the other elements in the scene. The human eye can handle these adjacent large differences in brightness far better than even the best cameras.

Certainly, using colored LEDs for GI changes the look of the artwork. But how it actually looks is certainly much different than what we see through cellphone cameras. The bloom and color richness is likely greatly exaggerated in photographs.

As with everything, taste is subjective. And if people saw these pins in person, I think their opinions wouldn't be so extreme.
I do have to say I haven't ever seen a clown puke pin so I can't really say for sure how it looks either. But I know for a fact that LEDs don't photograph well and it's very tricky to get a picture that accurately represents reality.

A few things, first, I like the paint job on that house and I would prefer to see a street of them than the cookie cutter stuff I usually see.

Second, colored leds behind back glass doesn’t work because the glass is already colored. I get what people are going for, but yeah, it just doesn’t work

When you do it with a playfield, a little bit goes a long way. You can overdo it, though I think you kinda cherry-picked images where the led lights caused the camera to darken the rest of the photo. I doubt any of these look this way in real life.

Finally, if you don’t like it, so what? You can probably replace all the leds with warm white non ghosting for less than $100, much less than that for incandescent bulbs. Don’t pay more for the leds, but it’s like repainting the walls of a new home and not that huge of a deal in my opinion…

    #24 2 years ago

So your biggest ‘harm’ is that you have to pay $100 to de-led a pin you bought. A pin, mind you, that sells for several times the price you would have paid a few years back. Nobody cares.

    #25 2 years ago
    Quoted from irobot:

And then 50% of pinball owners saw the hideous mess and said, "Ohhhhh yeah. I cannot wait to make my game look that weird and awful."[quoted image]

Literally no pinball owner said that. They said something to the effect of, 'I'd like to change the lighting on my game.' Then probably, 'That was a lot of work, I'm not re-doing that. Let the next owner deal with it.'

Also, photos poorly replicate what you see in person when it comes to pinball lighting.

If you take a translight that was designed to be back-lit by white bulbs,

and you put bright-colored LEDs behind it in an effort to make it "pop",

there is 100% probability that it will look awful, either in photos or in person.

You think would look better in person? it would probably look even worse.

And then you get the people that de led it to put incandescents in, which is let’s face it better for most backglasses and inserts if you haven’t got led ocd or Afterglow.

Okay, give me the $100. Since it's not a big deal.

Aside from the nuisance and expense, I honestly find the whole thing to be bizarre. Like you would find it bizarre if everyone started buying Yoko Ono albums.

Does this look weird to you, or not:

I was firmly anti-LED, but I started experimenting and they can be a good thing if used with a little restraint.

They made the murky old playfield inserts in my Bally Atlantis look BRAND NEW. Huge improvement.

I plan on using LEDs to the extent that it actually improves the game.

I have the same attitude towards "toys" that people add to their games. For example, you know that if Bally didn't need to cut costs, the player piano in Twilight Zone would have been a 3D plastic piano and not a playfield artwork. So if someone adds a really nice piano to their TZ, it's an improvement.

One thing that sucks is that LEDs get rid of GI lighting dimming effects that they used in a lot of high-end games. That's no good.

My Cirqus Voltare came with SUPER BRIGHT LEDs, they actually sting your eyes a little. So there is that problem, too. I would say that most games are best served with 1 or 2 diode frosted bulbs. The super-brights are pretty useless.

Likewise the LED flashers. They are such overkill it's not even funny.

This has all been discussed for years in the previous and expansive clown puke thread. No need to start a new one on the same topic.

    #31 2 years ago

You keep posting photos of colored leds in the dark. I’ll keep saying that leds photo bad, especially in the dark.

And by all means negotiate the led replacement in the buying price, but since this is a sellers market, you might not get it, just like you probably aren’t going to get a home seller to pay to repaint a home you want to buy.

Also, the Beatles broke up pushing fifty years ago now. If someone played a Yoko Ono album, most people are probably not going to even recognize it.

    #32 2 years ago

If you don't like the clown puke pin, don't buy it. If you choose to buy it, don't fkn whinge about it.

I'm going to try to recycle some of the Puke Lamps in my game to be playfield inserts in the other games.

I was thinking about blacking over some of the diodes with a sharpie so they're not so bright.

Or wrapping them in scotch tape to knock the brightness down and diffuse them a little. Maybe use an old-school bulb condom.

I remember LEDs being a point of debate when I first got into the hobby and did a quick search on LED bulbs in the forums and 8,10,12 years ago game owners were stoked about changing their incandescent bulbs to colored GI and back glasses. I would guess most of the games in question were “clowned” years ago. I mean how often do you see a solid state game with incandescent bulbs still in it? I mean I don’t care for it either, but are people still doing this?

    #48 2 years ago
    Quoted from Chisox:

... I mean I don’t care for it either, but are people still doing this?

    Is the pope Catholic?

Of course they are. And they should as they desire. Pinball games are too expensive not to enjoy as you wish. Lighting type and LED color choices (like house paint colors, etc.) are subjective and can be changed later if desired. One person's "clown puke" is another's perfect lighting upgrade.

Those who concern themselves with other pinheads' game mod preferences would be better off focusing on more important matters. Let it go and just appreciate your own games and hobby choices.
