I did some research last year on JY and found out some really interesting stuff that has previously been unknown about it's prototypes (including some mechanics that was removed last minute!) and the development process.

The initial idea was to get to the bottom with everything and present it as a hyper-interactive webpage but I lost spirit a bit and it halted. Now when I checked out my files again I felt it would be a better idea to just share the facts and see what other people might come up with. So I wrote an article about it and published on Medium. I hope you will find it interesting, and let me know if you got any ideas how to dig further.

The article is here:

Great write up!
Haven't owned one, but your comments about the storyline not making much sense are right on for casual play.
Seems like the game could be better if the story about what's going on were more clear.
The bus ball lock would have been cool. Removing that seems like a shame.
Not sure they would have sold more games with a better story and more mechanisms, but it would be interesting to know.

#3 2 years ago

Thank you for sharing this historical piece. Answered alot of questions I always wondered about.

#4 2 years ago

The crane multiball has always seemed unfinished to me. Thanks for your research.

real interesting read, thanks

awesome, thanks for sharing!

Very interesting read about the game. Thanks for sharing.

Great research and write up. Thank you!

#9 2 years ago

As a junkyard owner, this is fascinating! The magic bus locking mechanism would have been a really cool feature…

#10 2 years ago

Thank you for the positive response! I agree that the bus would have been really cool with that bus lock in place. As a minor side note, even the refrigerator has an opening door in the early blueprint I got (and it is also mentioned in the first project plan) but that was apparently ditched a lot earlier in the process. Probably a good thing since it sounds like something that could cause a lot of trouble.

CaryCarmichael Interesting! Do you have any other views of that machine? Is it yours?

#13 2 years ago

I am never exactly sure how anything works out, but this is now my third ‘1’ of Barry’s games. I messaged him on FB after the other two ended up in my possession. Sadly, I was never able to chat with him.

So this came to me by way of an ex-Williams employee. He worked on JY. He said that he believed it was Dwight’s coding game. He confirmed this came off the Mechanical Engineering Line.

There are no serial labels attached to the boards, and the ROMs are all hand written. It has red boards, the magnet and core present in the game, and the decal under the bus. The outlane art is green not red. The Toast shots to the Sewer and Bus shots are both lock inserts. The Toast insert at the standup to the left of DOG is blank, as are the inlane inserts. Along with a bunch of wood shavings and wood screws, the serial stickers were just bouncing around inside the cab with the Post-It note attached.

I’ll endeavor to snap photos of the game, and share whatever information I have or can gather.

It ended up being the final game played in league last night, so it was on stream - Twitch.tv/lynnsarcade, Winter Night 8, ~1:30:00 into the stream. I didn’t stick around much after League, but it seems it was played for quite awhile last night.

I appreciate all of the info you’ve pulled together about JY, @grandelius. It was a fantastic read.

Do you know what version of code it is running on?

Not off hand. I only got a few moments with the game after setting it up and prior to league starting. I will certainly bombard the thread with photos of everything I can find that’s unique about the game, including the ROMs. It’ll be later tonight that I’ll be able to get to the arcade and snap photos.

What I can tell you, besides the fact the game is a freaking time capsule, is BOTH flipper opto interrupters snapped within a few games - the plastic was just completely deteriorated.

#16 2 years ago

That's really cool indeed! Two other differences I have noticed on the prototypes are that the flipper buttons were blue instead of white and the crane and backboard decals were missing. Your machine has it so it was probably added later. The colors/order of the car targets are also differing on prototype vs sample vs production.

Yes, I got a list of the prototypes and can confirm that #1 was for the programmer:

Prototype #1 -> Programmer
Prototype #2 -> Tag sample
Prototype #3 -> Shipping Test Vertical
Prototype #4 -> Shipping Test Horizontal
Prototype #5 -> Bottom of Stairs (in-house testing site)
Prototype #6 -> Field Test #1
Prototype #7 -> Field Test #2
Prototype #8 -> Field Test #3
Prototype #9 -> Field Test #4
Prototype #10 -> Germany
Prototype #11 -> Germany
Prototype #12 -> France
Prototype #13 -> Spain

Really interesting, I notice it got the Lock labels still on the inserts, which confirms what I suspected. I guess they didn't bother changing that since it was only used internally.

I am very curious what version it is running, though I suspect it is not an early prototype version. But if we are really lucky I suppose it could be some never-released version.

I am happy to see this machine is kept in its original state, no LED lamps or ColorDMD. I hope it will stay that way

This is fantastic info. I’d love to know how you got this info, and I’d love to get the same info for both BSD and DH.

Quoted from Grandelius:

Hey, hey now. I am all about original. There is a reason I love these Proto games - I believe the life of the Proto game should be preserved, not erased.

That said… I love ColorDMDs and I do use LEDs. I like to use the LEDOCD boards and I install Scorbit in every game at the arcade. I will also need to remove the ROMs and replace them with the new Soren version, because it is better suited for competitive play. These pieces can always be reversed, and I always note and store any and all original items.

At this point I must prefer the addition of this ‘new tech’, as the game is better adapted to streaming, tournament use, etc.

It was, however, glorious to see this game as it was 20+ years ago, almost like it came by time machine straight from the factory.

I’m not overly optimistic on what will be found on these hand written ROMs, but I will do whatever is necessary to get the ROM info into the correct hands for discovery.

#18 2 years ago

In no apparent order, here are photos of this game. Darn it! I didn’t get photos of the edge of the playfield, the hand written ROMs or the display ROMs. Next time, I guess.

Awesome work. Looks like the TWIPYs removed "Favorite Pinball Publication or Article" in 2021, but if they bring it back next year, this should definitely be nominated.

Yes, I did not intend to start a debate on that, sorry! Those are all valid points, the machine seems to be in great hands! It also seems to be in excellent condition so I assume all kinds of protectors would be a good idea as well.

Very interesting to see your photos. I will look deeper into it, but one thing I notice is the "Collect toilet jackpot" insert where the "Window shopping" is on production. I wonder if that was related to the original multiball rules.

Quoted from CaryCarmichael:

This is fantastic info. I’d love to know how you got this info, and I’d love to get the same info for both BSD and DH.

I got them from the prototype memos in the engineering files at The Strong Museum:
https://archives.museumofplay.org/repositories/3/archival_objects/31974

I don't know if I got the rights to redistribute them, but anyone can order copies. I believe the price was 50 cents per page or something, and the page count was reduced by half when the bill-of-materials was excluded. It would be wonderful to see people dig into details like this on other games. The list of files for DH and BSD are here:
