New Houdini owner. Picked up a used one (1056). Played a few games so far. Got both catapults dialed in pretty easily. Came with tilt art blades and flashinstinct target decals and Eric’s Seance planchette and keychain fob. Added the fob to the lockdown bar.

Wondering if other get a ball hang up behind the key lane sign.

Looking for a Cliffy for the scoop if anyone has an extra. Flipper toppers, and plastics from the goodie bag. My goodie bag wasn’t included with the game.

Quoted from Freddykaboodle:

Indeed I do…and lots of other places too. But hey, that’s part of the fun for me…enjoy the game.

Good to know. I’ll think of some fixes to prevent it, now that I know it happens to others in the same spot.

Really enjoying the game so far. They really captured the feeling of the era of Houdini.

Quoted from scbill88:

Trunk shot missing left. After 1 year of almost flawless trunk shots, my Houdini is missing left between the left blade and trunk every time now.
I slid the glass down and gave the catapult a gentle nudge left, and it hits dead center of the trunk one time. Then it is right back to missing hard left.
is there a more permanent solution? I tried to find a thread in this sub for trunk catapult adjustment but came up empty. If someone could put me on the right track I would appreciate it!

Lots of plays on the game? Pivot of the catapult arm could be worn a bit. Operate everything by hand under the playfield and see if there is play in the catapult. Also do what Diablo suggested and check for loose bracket.

My game initially threw right, lowering coil strength fixed this. You said you game was working fine for a year, so I expect your coil setting to be good.

Quoted from Soundkillr:

Again... Just an fyi... I used a 8 inch sub in the cabinet... I bought a 6.5 inch hole saw on ebay and a 1 inch mdf spacer... For a whopping 27 dollars... And a pyle 800 watt subwoofer... That I couldn't stab and puncture with a knife... All in total for under 55 dollars..... I wired the Amp straight to the sub... Made several audio adjustments.... And this bass will blow the cabinet apart. I'll attach images to give everyone a general idea. Installing a sub... Using the factory Amp is really easy and delivers really good results. Make sure and dial in the sub output control on the Amp... Or you won't hear much.

Thanks for the detailed write up. Seems like a way easier method rather than adding the customary Polk psw10 sub.

I will go your route!

Quoted from pinballinreno:

Get the capacitor upgrade kit from API before attempting to dial in the game.
For now just get it working mostly.
The capacitor upgrade fixes the catapult.
Sold out for now, ask Dave when they might have one?
https://store.american-pinball.com/products/kit0006-00

I was just quoted 3/4 weeks until the kit is ready from AP.

Going to try the 4 cap board from Spooky in place of the single cap upgrade.

#14176 1 year ago
Quoted from pinballinreno:

It will work perfectly.

I have to figure out from the earlier post where to mount this spooky board.

I am thinking, the spooky board goes right after the power supply upgrade, to stabilize every coil. Where as the AP upgrade cap is mounted under playfield and is targeted to specific bank of coils.

What is the super skill shot?

#14207 1 year ago

Trying to get my Houdini dialed in.
Added 48v power supply
EOS switches
Shaker
Knocker
Spooky capacitor board for Flipper coils and others on that row.
7” hole in cabinet for Pyle subwoofer
New curved scoop deflector
Cliffy protector on scoop
Ball lock post jammed. Enlarged 4 holes by 1/64” to enable alignment through playfield.

Now to the game play tweaks that I could use some guidance.

Loop shots should hit the middle of the flipper from either loop? Left loop hits the end of the flipper and makes for impossible repeat loops. Suspect I need to bend outter guide more flat.

Kick out from scoop should hit flipper or top of sling? Mine always kicks out but some go to flipper some hit top of sling.

Consensus on playfield pitch 6.2? I set all my games at 6.8, maybe this is causing me problems.

Is it normal to have to adjust coil strengths from suggested factory numbers after installing the updated 48v power supply?

Quoted from Markharris2000:

OK, it must be me missing something, but while waiting/anticipating a new Houdini machine from the next production run, I was browsing around the web and came across the very early 2016 prototype pictures and a discussion about the machine, LONG BEFORE IT WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED. I had never seen this detail previously, so it was kinda fascinating to read about API's "magic" theme journey, (Starting with their Magic Girl involvement). Notice not surprisingly that the Flyer artwork and detail doesn't match the prototype machine, and the prototype machine doesn't match the production units at all.
The reporter's write up after seeing HOUDINI circa September 2016, in las vegas:
https://www.pinballnews.com/news/americanpinball2.html
And then pictures of the first prototype (notice the water torture chamber was replaced by the theater stage, and almost everything else changed too!) here:
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Pretty sure that is rhe JPop designed Houdini.

#14263 1 year ago
Quoted from Markharris2000:

The early design was connected to him for sure. API was helping him get out of the Magic Girl mess when they started as a company, and his hand was all over the early prototype Houdini design. I haven't uncovered how their 'changing' relationship translated to the complete 180-degree change in Houdini but clearly it did. Based on what I see, I think we ended up with a far superior game...

I would have loved to flip this JPop Houdini. I wonder where this proto Houdini is…

I do like the current Houdini, one of my favs in my collection. It’s definetly the style of game I enjoy.

I really enjoy my Houdini game. It’s the game I play the most of my collection. I find it brutally difficult.

I have a text display bug on “combo misssion 2” , missing text, then is cut off. Mission 1 displays perfectly.

Couldn’t tell you if mission 3 is correct as I have never made it that far.

Quoted from dboeren:

Houdini owners - I haven’t been able to find a machine to play yet so I’m asking you…
I’ve heard that Houdini has tight/punishing shots. How would you compare it to games like TMNT or Walking Dead with a similar reputation?
How hard is it (compared to other games) to get to the Wizard mode? It seems like you have a lot of goals to get there. I can get to TZ Lost in the Zone or AFM Rule the Universe once in a while for instance.
Thanks! I should finally be able to play a Houdini in January if all goes well.

I own all 3 games. TWD (pro), TMNT (prem) and of course Houdini.

Each game has it’s tight shots. On TMNT the 2 shots from the upper flipper are tight and not easy to hit. The game itself is cluttered and that’s what makes it a bit punishing on the brick shots.

TWD has one tightish shot, the Riot loop beside the prison. It can be a hard shot to hit if not dialed in. The hard rep for TWD is from the uncontrolled shooting of the drop targets which are a necessity to advance in the game. Shooting the drops is not a safe thing to do. The exit from the pops can also drive you to drink with too many center drains.

Houdini is just an absolute fantastic game. I don’t find it overly brutal. The inner loop is visually tight but still can be made. Milkcan loop is a good challenging shot too.

Lots to do on all 3 games. I am not consistent enough to reach a wizard mode on any of them. TZ LITZ, I’ll get about every 5th game or so.

You’ll love your Houdini when you get it!!

Big shoutout today to Ericpinballfan for hooking me up with his amazing planchette mod. Looks great on the game and nails theme integration. He is also great to work with. Can’t stop looking at this thing. 10 out of 10!

Grab the Flashinstinct target decal set. They really add to the finishing touch look. Cheap too.

Quoted from PinMonk:

Seems like if AP knows this, it would be easy to push out a bugfix update that limits replay levels so people who are unaware of how to fix the issue don't think their machine is defective.

Does anyone have a pic of the setting we are supposed to change? Replay levels are under what catagory?

Added a Q robot from thingaverse. Printed at 30%. Spray painted silver. No clearcoat as when I tried the silver color went matte finish.

very cool, great find, just downloaded it, for those with 3d printers . . ..
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4595025

I printed it with a resin printer. Elegoo Mars 2.

I don’t have any fusion 360 skills or tinkercad. I would have put the pieces together and just printed the arms seperate.

The glue line for the torso could be eliminated with a one piece print.

Could also add a hole and peg system for the arms so they could be positioned how you’d like.
