This totally makes sense. It keeps your investment down and makes it easier to find a buyer when you go to sell.
But if it is a keeper, besides adding ColorDMD and LEDs, then certain game-specific mods can definitely add to the enjoyment factor, for instance:
Bill Ung saucer mod for AFM
MikeD mod for CFTBL
Dancing Boogies for SS
