Yes, a Karen vote, 100%. I barely made it past the first paragraph without rolling my eyes. Let's call a spade a spade, the OP has a transgression against "rap" music and that got him/her all riled up...because one of the parodies used that beat. A very innocent beat at that. Keyword, no lyrics, just the beat with parody voice over. If the beat would have been Elvis, OP likely would have moved on. OP is trying to convince us that it's all about the laziness of the teacher using YouTube, blah. Its not, its your bias against rap music. Therefore, you lose credibility for me to take this serious.

It takes 5 seconds to find that video too, and it's got 5 million views with tons of comments about social studies teachers using this. Again, you hate rap music so much you can't even handle the beats being used, and you stereotype an entire genre to boot.

Clearly the teacher is trying to give the kids a "fun" project to do, so maybe they might pay attention vs. traditonal text book assignment. I can likely guarantee this isn't the core teaching method for this teacher. Cut him/her a break.

    Quoted from Yoko2una:

So just to sum up your first paragraph, you barely read it but then was sure I don't have credibility, all while putting words in my mouth. Got it.
If you actually read what I wrote, my issues were 3-fold, one certainly being that the video, which is being used as a learning tool in lieu of anything else to teach about ancient civilizations, starts off with a credit to a song that's questionable to be tied to anything education-related. If the song was Young Girl by Gary Puckett, Rocket Queen by GnR, or any F'ing song by A.C., my WTF meter would still be at a 10. IMHO it's not in the hands of an educator to ever tow the line of exposing a group of impressionable youth to something that could be offensive. Or if there's something in a lesson which could be construed as offensive, controversial, or sensitive, a simple email or note would be nice.
Oh, and if you take the lyrics away from any song, it's easy to call the beat "very innocent" as you removed EVERYTHING that made it offensive.

I'm not going to go back and forth with you, but you put the words in your own mouth. I read the entire post. I didn't manufacture anything.

Your issues are not equally 3-fold when you say... "3) But I'm mostly really unhappy with the fact that "Crack That" is being used in an assignment". You didn't say, I'm mostly unhappy Maroon 5 was used...you picked on the rap song.

Also, to call Crank That "questionable", tells me everything I need to know. Lots of rap is questionable, but not that one...hence my stereotype point.
