Quoted from vid1900:"simple" LEDs don't work well in 6803s, but the ones with the regulation chips (or diode pair and caps) that can be installed either way in the socket seem to work fine.
So it's possible a yopps6803 could be made, but it would require a few extra components
As I've stated in other places, I'm a hobbyist but not any sort of EE. The original Yoppsicle has a super simple circuit that I could somewhat understand. Embarrassingly, I tried to work with a couple people on one of those freelance service websites to try and develop a yoppsicle that would work in a Williams machine (Blackout was the machine I was using as a test) that uses a lamp matrix. I spent a few thousand dollars and a good bit of time having test yoppsicles made and none of them worked (that's the embarrassing part). They all ghosted, even with an additional diode placed in the circuit.
Not wanting to give up so easily, I also talked to a fellow hobbyist about it and we kind of worked a deal where I gave him one of my project pinball machines and he would help me work on the circuit. Also part of our deal was he threw in a board that would allow me to update the ruleset on my Meteor. A few months later he came back and said he was too busy to work on my project and it died right there. I was disappointed but not much I could do really. It was just an old project World Cup Soccer (the 1970's version) that I gave him so it was no great loss.
At that point I put a pin in that project and worked on getting the color ones done.
Having said all that, I still really appreciate all the support other hobbyist have shown for the couple of models of Yoppsicle I do have on the market. I fill several orders a week and that makes me very, very happy.
