Risk seems very low with Heighway since they've proven they can make a game, but there is always some risk with these things and I wouldn't recommend making a deposit you're not willing to lose.

$1500 is not so much to risk. I've discovered having something on the line makes me feel part of the project and all the news and progress updates are more interesting and fun for me.
