Very cool layout.
The overall layout is 'standard' Nordman mixing it up in a way that's very different but makes perfect sense. Not a Lawlor or in cases even Ritchie rehash/rearrange, or some other less thought out/played out like TH (I guess the idea to detect if you used upper flippers didn't work out) Nordman came up with the flipper placement that has what looks like a couple shots for each upper flipper.. It stinks but doesn't matter that someone else took the controls and handled the adjustments in the play test phase since his core design looks intact.
I don't know how much was changed, but the same or similar thing happened with Elvira 1 and that game kicks ass
Crazy.. Poopy multiball... I heard Gary stern said no to the toilet and Kaminkow pushed it through.. I'm with Gary even though he was proven wrong.
Quoted from ZenTron:
If i got Aliens it would be on location so i'd get large screen. If its sitting in your basement I can see opting for small one or none on backbox.
Agreed 100% I think the screen on the playfield is great.. Sure you might look up in a stop and go moment and a big screen on the backbox is cool but why bother when everything is down where the ball is.
For me this is by far the best new game.
Theme: Batman 66 theme is a negative for me, dialed in theme does nothing, alien is a positive.
Price: bm and dialed are way out, aliens is doable.
Playfield: dialed is probably best, aliens has solid Nordman bones, bm is a total yawn.
What's the ETA for a new buyer today? I'm not really into the waiting game... Would prefer to wait till we're talking about say ~4 weeks from order to doorstep.
I think of it as a Dave game with Dennis bones. I really like the offset upper flippers and associated shots.
Man, I want to get hands on this game.
Anybody near Charleston getting one soon??
I'm on the fence if I would do the backbox screen.. it looks very nice, but is totally not necessary @ home
I really liked what I heard in the gameplay vid. I trust the judgment of their sound guy.
Quoted from SadSack:
Fair enough, but I still think I'd prefer both operational at the same time.
I think the case for swapping is really for space limited collectors and operators. The swap would be sweet for an operator, keep the games fresh, costs lower and it looks like it would be easy to shop and store pulled playfields.
I'm in for a standard, so the news I really want to hear is something about large numbers shipping. I'm sure aurich has the le art nailed.
Paid in full is too spicy for me. I do have a deposit in, and have no problem letting a cool G sit there till at least the end of the year.
Star wars was a legit killer theme in the 90s, the theme is burned out from the crummy movies imo. The latest movies help a little, but I still value the theme less than I did before episode one.
There were pics of 3 games at a show in Italy. The word is getting out. I figured I'd get mine around the end of this year.. dates given were in 'Pinball time'
I'm still in if they'll make me one, and I think the starwars pin looks like solid fun.
ugh... Website still shows the f'n prototype with the roto mech instead of the lcd screen.. keepin' the faith is getting hard.
They might be silent on pinside, but there's a lot more direct communication happening. At least from my point of view.
Looks like it's gonna open in the mid 50's ranking when the ratings get their weekly update...(unless some more reviews pop in??) I think it's got rock solid odds on moving further up than down.
Ranked 25! Way higher than I estimated from the reviews with comments. A little positive momentum going for Alien.
Website updated! Looks like they won't be selling direct anymore, says volume orders only. I wonder if us single machine buyers will be passed to the local distributor?
Where's the value in stern LEs? Recovering the fiber light cost is something. I never really saw the value in any LE pin.
I think a non refundable deposit makes sense for these small shops to gauge genuine interest.
I haven't been told a specific date. With ship transport and customs, it's probably a guess till the games show up at cointaker.
Just heard from Morgan to confirm my mailing address. He said the first bunch are shipping out this week.
Last I heard they would go through cointaker even though I was a direct buyer.. but it sounded like the shipping details weren't ironed out, maybe they do something different.
Paid in full standard buyers must be on the slim side if delt31 is getting a crack at the first large shipment to CT.
If there's only a few hundred orders left, they're probably better off running ~25 a month and ramp up as word gets around and demand increases.
Quoted from Whysnow:
can we get this dude thread booted for broken record status if enough people report? It is a valid question.
Honestly have never seen anyone drag on and on and on so ambiguously to try and claim he has uncovered some fatal flaw in the game... but you just need to wait for him to explain what it is. You are really getting old with this shtick.
Totally. this guy needed to shit or get off the pot on his hidden flaw about 4 posts ago.
Quoted from delt31:
I don't know - both "latest events" show location as Penn US. I do see the original estimate of 10/17 for final destination (10/16 for NY) which would be reasonable but not sure why the latest events are showing it's in Penn.
EDIT can someone confirm either way (I'm wrong or yes, that's correct)?
Ship tracker has the OOCL Asia a day off the coast of UK pushing 20kts, so i'd say the 17th is probably still a good estimate.
I'm gradually coming out of the waiting game slumber and getting excited now that delivery seems eminent.
I think it looks like the best JJP yet, i'm glad it was designed by new blood. I think the alien layout is a bit more unique even if it's not packed as deep, and boy is JJPOTC packed. I didn't realize the middle had spinning discs at first (I'm cool with randomizers, really like whirlwind, TAF doesn't toot my horn tho) It's really a great looking pin.
It might even change the tune of Stern's current business plan, their 'high end' machines are really kinda pathetic compared to JJP in physical quality and nuanced rule depth.
for those of you following the shipment; OOCL Asia is now tracking on east coast AIS.
I had to read war and peace to finally find out what greenhornet thinks about the upper right flipper feed.
Quoted from cosmokramer:
Like him or agree with him or not, at least the greenhornet takes the time to back up his claims with in depth research and studying. Even if you think he is full of shit at least he attempts to back up his claims with examples.
So much more refreshing than the typical "this game sucks" post with no support.
It only took him months of blathering on to actually say something.
I'm a pre-order, delivery scheduled Thursday. Games are shipping! hopefully this is a sign of the heighway ship heading back on course.
This layout is really unique (in a very good way). Feeding the upper right is not easy, but it's crazy satisfying. Mother to upper right to upper left ramp has to be one of the most satisfying combos in Pinball.
The metal parts look about 3x thicker than the last new stern I owned. The tweaks or adjustments seem on par with my expectation from any nib. I'm sure expectations vary; this guy is a happy camper.
Quoted from Hazoff:
don't make this thread another vs Stern, its built well and thats a good thing, WTF does Stern have to do with it?
Take it easy. It's a point of reference. The heighway mechs are substantially thicker metal than the current market leader. I don't see jjp or any other current brand pins every day so I can't make a comparison. Build quality matters to me and has influenced my pin purchases.
I've found a few ball traps. Right side of the xeno head, just under the bottom pop bumper.
The game really is something special. It would be a very sad day if heighway doesn't pull through.
This good enough?
EDIT: I broke out the meter and it's like it looks, the left two are connected and the right two.
Mine does that flicker, I thought it was on purpose, But maybe it's some interference from running the flipper power wires parallel with everything else?
Quoted from Astropin:
. Once you start to get a feel for them this thing can really flow!.
Oh man does it flow!
What kind of scores are you guys getting? My best is around 150mil. It seems like I'm coming out of ambush or maybe sentry gun (or both?) with buku points if I hit a decent number of shots. Still working on completing most of the modes.. I think I've completed 3 maybe 4.. you really gotta have the shots locked in to progress through.
Edit: right orbit for me is no sling with good speed, but sling if it's moving slow unless you give a tap as it comes off the orbit.
Quoted from spfxted:
Yes!....let these early people get the bugs worked out. Hopefully Heighway can work out and refine the machine within the next few months....
There are very few refinements left to do in this game. I haven't made it to all out war, but the code looks to be feature complete. Hardware wise I don't see any bigger change than what you'd see on Williams sample game and later production games.
Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:
In regards to Andrew's circumstances in leaving Heighway Pinball, new information has come to light, portions of my stated facts have been corrected and I reverified the balance of my facts about Heighway Pinball. As a result, I NO LONGER BELIEVE Andrew absconded with any money or misled the new buyers of HP.
Your stated facts have been corrected... and you've reverified the balance of your facts..
Quoted from Ferret:
Which callout are you referring to, delt31 ? Just narrowing it down to a particular mode would be fine...
I think he's talking about starting acid burn goes something like "that's gonna burn through the god damned hull" I haven't turned on family mode, but that's the only time I've heard it.
There's really no new news here about LEs shipping after some standards. This has all been hashed over and over. What exactly has changed at this point? Heighway never gave me a solid delivery date, ever. That came from cointaker with freight tracking.
Quoted from kklank:
The game is very finicky. I still have the problem where I'm playing and I'm usually having a decent game (something over 125 million) and than the flippers and buttons have zero power, so my game is basically over. It's frustrating but I just deal with it. It's also typical when it's been on for a while. I still love it though.
I would try replacing the USB cable that goes to the cabinet I/o board.
Helmut is a great guy, he mentioned a manual would be coming soon. The LE buyers will be getting a much more tuned game than us early run owners.
Quoted from lodgingdolphin:
I’m following the heighway instructions but I can’t get the update to load. Any trick to this not mentioned in the instructions? I have he newer computer and it’s currently on 1.02.
Try downloading again clean, I had a bad download or unzip or something and it wouldn't update till I just started over.
Quoted from Lamoraldus:
The Windows file is 10MB as well. If it is 16MB your computer unpacked it and it will not work. You need to tell your Browser not to unpack or open downloaded files. As I have a Mac I am not sure if and how that works.
Yeah, I found that firefox was giving me a 16mb file.. i downloaded with IE and it comes in as a .tar file with the correct size .upd in it.
The mac one seems good to go.
Quoted from O-from-DO:
Hopefully the last problem to fix in the near future:
After starting the game there are allready some points given before a ball is getting launched (varies from 5 to 11k). Did anybody have the same issue and could fix it already?
Have you checked your stand-up targets? Probably a switch gap adjustment.
Quoted from WeirPinball:
So far -
Ball won't launch up the ramp - hits it and comes back to the kicker.
Ball won't go into the mouth, hits alien jaw and falls off.
High pitched sound when I hold the left flipper.
Trough kicker was too strong and ball would bounce right back into the trough. - Fixed.
Looks like I have some reading to do on the other three problems. Everything else seems fine so far.
I have my ball launcher power set pretty low, that helped mine. some people put a spacer on the mech which helped their alignment.
You'll have to mess with the xeno in the service menu to see what's going on. Your servo arm might need to be moved a notch on the spline so the jaw goes all the way open. make sure you don't hear a bunch of servo buzzing when the jaw is closed it'll burn out the servo over time.
Quoted from delt31:
hmmmm - so when the machine is on and the xeno mech stationary, you don't hear any buzz at all? I'll need to check again but I think mine has a little noise.
Mine was pretty noisy and died. since I replaced it and got it properly alined, It's near silent. Take note of the wiring if you're too anxious to wait for a heighway replacement like me. You'll have to swap a couple pins on the plug of a regular servo.
Quoted from Makakka:
You can see it that way. You have nothing to say to them unless you pay in full so you are nothing to them. I dont know if they care much about the crumb bums and shoe clerks (not all) you are leading here because this thread alone contains tons of hate and defamation against the company. The main stream here says refund in open mouth like baby bird, never buy pin from them and buying experience is agony and frustration (other threads are worse).
I paid in full 2016 to support Andrews great vision and my taxes so I am something to them. Actually due to good contacts and much work some time ago fueled by anger (when Andrew did unhealthy tours in your country with my money) I can just pull the trigger and a bomb (since then in hypersleep chamber) drops in Wales, it would cost me a few minutes and no money. But I dont want that. I dont see a le shipped that was fully paid after mine in Andrews era (we ordered pin in Andrews era, these are completely different orders to post Andrew orders because a man is responsible for his trust, only kids, women and fags blame third parties for their mistakes) and that is not even important. Important is I appreciate the new owners and some loyal staff (I pray for their health) dig that pin out the shithole Andrew left it in and I dont want to disturb that process.
Besides, you are one of the golden boys of Morgan, he gifted you with a christmas dream. I received nothing personal from them since the ashes of Andrew. It hurts but it is ok until they hurt my trust which I feel wont ever happen. I feel they will deliver and I felt it all the time because this pin is dark magic that will succeed (it contains the bones Andrew ripped out of Nordman). I will comment (and donate) here when I have it or comment before when that stoner from California makes subpar comment again (I cant take it any longer) and you will have it also (after me I believe) if you keep your inner shakra intact. Until then.
I like the cut off your jib.
The crummy communication is a huge downer. The game is great, and that is the only thing keeping this train on the tracks.
Quoted from Cheeks:
Was a fun game, but what struck me was that it felt like a HEAVILY routed 90s Bally/Williams game, complete with blown out scoop hole and numerous other issues.
Numerous like what?
Quoted from Cheeks:
This was a location with lots of games, who knows how to take care of them, so it wasn't from operator neglect. It comes down to crappy quality. All these fanboys claiming "best quality machine ever" can't see straight through their Alien glasses.
I'm as frustrated as everyone with the non-existent communication, but..
Exactly what is crappy quality? The game got beat up because they didn't mylar and cliffy? I've seen lots of womped games on route less than 6 months old.
I stand by the build quality being somewhere below JJP and above Stern.
Mechs and cabinet are solid, I like the jjp style service rails, under the playfield looks nice. I also dig the operator friendly flipper and pop bumper mechs. The playfield was done by Micro, I saw some issues posed, but I rate mine better than CPRs i've bought (both being a fair bit better than stern).. The cabinet wires could be cleaned up a little better, wireforms are stern thickness and plastics are double thick acrylic. It's not made of adamantium, but it's built to be serviceable and as durable as any other modern pin.
All participants should be taken care of before any new announcements. Anything less is a really bad move.
I've had a few big flings, but mostly more subtle. Not as much action as the xmen wolverine shot.
Derelict ship mode does the bass test thing when you start it. if it's cranked you'll shake the whole house
With the center post and fairly small flipper gap, it's pretty shocking how hard this game is.
The game is great. The software keeps getting better, guys involved with the game that I've interacted with are helpful and enthusiastic. Too bad communication is so bad from the company.
Quoted from J85M:
A lot of these delays are down to Andrew putting the game into production when parts like the scoop, xeno and other mechanical aspects weren’t 100%, hence the redesigned mechs being sent out to existing owners.
Sending updated parts plus shipping from UK has to add up, I imagine it makes sense to slow roll games till they have confidence in these new parts.. with 100+ machines out there, rolling out something like an updated vuk is an easy 10-20k up in smoke.
Quoted from Durzel:
It would be nice if Heighway would at least start releasing schematics so that people who are actually getting machines (new money it seems) can maintain them in 5-10+ years time.
Last time I spoke with Helmut he told me a manual was coming. That might be on standby if they're still tinkering with production parts.
Even after all the setbacks and earned sour attitude about heighway. I think there is a path for heighway redemption, simply because the game is exceptionally good.
Quoted from benheck:
Probably the classic "sunk cost" trap - "If I don't invest more, I'll lose what I already invested!"
Have newer shipped Aliens improved at all? I've played Whysnow's prototype unit on location many times and find it fairly.... thin. Hilton would say it's because I'm not a very good player (true) but something still feels off.
Another totally biased opinion. I think it probably is stingy on content for weaker players. There's lots of sweet shit in the game, but it is difficult to reach (i'd guess i'm about average pinsider skill). I've never reached the all out war and only completed one of the mini wizard modes of the two movies, But when you get there, oh boy; all kinds of content you never see otherwise. Even getting deeper into some of the modes, there's stuff that's just hard to reach, but really cool.
Quoted from Wolfmarsh:
Heighway is struggling but hasn't reached JPOP level yet. Will that change in the future? Maybe so.
Can heighway ever reach jpop level? They made two playable feature complete pinball games. Even if it's a horrible crash ending, they at least lifted off the ground before going down.
Quoted from BD_Designs:
If we automatically always take the cheerleaders' or manufacturer's side as gospel, we've seen there's a good chance people are being blatantly lied to in order to keep their money in order to continue fueling bad business decisions.
Speaking for myself; no cheerleader convinced me to gamble with heighway. I think everyone putting money down had an understanding there was some level of risk involved. I guess I got on board post skitb & jpop debacles... maybe confidence was stronger before. Even then, I remember unrealistic timelines when alien was announced.
Quoted from Wolfmarsh:
The unstable LED chains in Alien are indicative of a much larger design problem.
Software updates since you played cleared up a lot of the LED flickering.. imo really shows the skill level of the programmers... Maybe you're less impressed with the EE background
Quoted from benheck:
Also the modular cabinet is ultimately pointless. This is a hobby where people worship at the altar of edition # and rarity. They see games as a complete package not a Lego set.
I think that cabinet idea was DOA when they announced you needed to update the PC on a FT. I like the illuminated cabinet sides.. and the glass can be removed in a way that let's you place a game in a tight spot where you couldn't get the glass out on a traditional game.
So, how many games were built? Seems like over 100.. can anyone definitively answer now that it's over?
Quoted from NPO:
So, after 1 year of getting my deposit back, I finally had an opportunity to play an Alien.
There are seemingly endless posts of shot analysis, game descriptions, and gameplay videos. I'll offer my opinion and it is this: it is a crying shame this is not getting mass produced.
It's sad so few have had a chance to play this game. Anyone near me who wants to play one; send a PM
Quoted from DerGoetz:
So what do you guys think will happen to Alien prices in the collector market in the long run.
Drop or rise?
Full Throttles you could not give away the past 2 years.
What now that production has stopped?
Will Heighway machines become collectable all of a sudden?
Who knows. Right now it seems like everyone is asking 9. so up slightly?
Afaik FT is way more rare...
Edit; I think the big thing will be io boards.. if you can get some kind of replacement; value up.. if you have a boat anchor when one dies, value down.
I made a copy of the SSD in my alien the first week; Afraid of getting a corrupt drive. If anyone gets hosed I got your back on that front.
Quoted from Aurich:
I definitely don't have room to just sit on it, if it's getting sold NIB it's going now. Not gonna play some storage speculation game, too much.
I'm whatever as far as Andrew goes really, that's not a big issue for me. I've moved past it all. I just don't know that I want to look at the game itself, and the work I did, and be constantly reminded of what I would have liked to have been able to do differently.
The game is fun man.. i guess it depends how sour it all is.. but it's gotta be pretty cool owning a pinball game you had a hand in.. any team project isn't going to be everything you wanted anyway.
I'm hoping that Aurich does a run of PETG plastics one day If he did alternative art that would be double cool.
Interesting they don't appear to be in games before the extra screen. I assume they are there for ramp entrance switches that never happened.
Quoted from mcbPalisade:
I saw this and felt immediate suspicion - not normal business behavior. Hope I'm wrong
Seems bizarre to me... if they had some games under their belt and offered a discount to guys screwed by another company, that would make more sense.. I'm not even sure I get the deeproot business plan at all, it seems like a joke.
