Quoted from Zampinator:

Do we know how much a playfield kit is? I'm pulling the trigger on FT & part of the reason is to buy Alien playfield to swap out. Cool idea! If priced right.

From what I recall from the interview, not fixed yet but very likely to be less than $3,750.

Great interview. Andrew's enthusiasm is communicative; I had the pleasure to share dinner with the Highway team in Saint Etienne and found the same passion with the man in person.

The glossy red cabinet finish is stunning. I was a bit disappointed to learn that this was not for the Pro version - make it an option? If a customer is buying only one cabinet and buying several kits later, it would make sense to have the nicest possible one?

Wish I could make it for the FT launch party on Jan 16... sadly in between planes at that time.

I'm willing to bet a lot of people will consider getting one, knowing Alien is a $4k "upgrade" down the road

Is there any announcement about the price for "upgrades" (featuring novel PF/BG/Cabinet artwork/code)? I just checked on their website, could not find the information.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

here is the revised layout and shot map.

Thanks! Very exciting. Looking forward to see how area A works (left outlane).
Interesting shot map, with specific shots that can only be reached by the upper flipper.

Quoted from WIKED:

Shame there is a screen going into it.

Uh? It does not bother me at all - to the contrary. I played Full throttle and the LCD is well integrated. Same applies to Nemo.

#1551 8 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

That's an interesting point. I wonder what % of people buying the LE over a Standard would do so with plans to swap?

If (When...) I become Heighway pinball customer one day, I would be interested in a LE cabinet (the red one is gorgeous) with regular versions of at least two games.
In other words, I would only buy one cabinet and several games - space is an issue -, so I would like this cabinet to be as nice as possible. Makes sense?

Quoted from Wizcat:

Andy did a closed room reveal yesterday at the UK Pinball Party. No pictures allowed.

Thanks for sharing !
Wish I was there...

From what I could read elsewhere the "Wow factor" for those who entered the Room of Secrets was strong. Game is going to be a hit!

Andrew: Any chance it could be ready for Festi flip? (end of October)

Quoted from PinChili:

How could they not show a flipping white wood by now for example? Forget the artwork approvals.

I see your point but that would be a double-edged sword. The whole artwork package matters a lot for a majority of customers, especially for Aliens. I guess they discussed that possibility internally, and voted against which I completely understand.

The "show the whitewood" approach seems the way to do for a boutique job: we have seen great examples of progress reports like Haunted Cruse. But Heighway aims to become a major manufacturer and is not playing at Home-brew level.

#1923 8 years ago
Quoted from solarvalue:

Maybe they should make the "c" ramp an up-and-down ramp like in Whirlwind or Pinbot, plenty of space behind there for a lane to a saucer or target.

?
C is not a ramp but an orbit shot. D is the ramp. But you are right, some space is available behind this ramp.

Quoted from sparechange1974:

So what does it roughly cost to ship from the UK? My understanding is roughly $300-$500 to my house in Minnesota. The upper end is using air freight and lift gate service(yes air freight)and the price will obviously vary depending on location. Total of roughly $8500 shipped, airfreight, lift gate to my door.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Heighway will ship the game to the US at their own expenses, and you need to pay for domestic transport only.

#2092 8 years ago
Quoted from dmbjunky:

There was already a South Park, why would someone make another one?

Great. Interesting to check the differences. Most obvious to me are the stars. Did you try to match known constellations?
Are they located so that the LED strips behind may give some twinkling effects?
Any "blinking" star such as Algol (Beta Persei), a well known variable star?

#2410 8 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

Here's the plan for the art going forward: I'm working on the playfield art now. It's not a mass of black and green, I'm trying a lot of other ideas.

Good to know! Excellent idea to have the same person in charge of the whole package (Cabinet, backglass, playfield).

#2599 8 years ago

I can't wait to see this game "for real". I find what I have seen so far good, but I won't know how good until I see the whole thing. The translite is more or less in line with what I was expecting (which is a positive comment in that case ) but it could exceed my expectations when illuminated. Same applies to retro-lit cabinet artwork.

I must say I am an "old school" alien fan. The main interest in the first movie was not to see the monster, but to imagine it. So the Egg is just fine with me.

In other words, provided the PF artwork is not botched (and I doubt it will be from the comments from People-In-The-Know) we could have a real winner here.

Quoted from kaneda:

Great info but Aurich you act so unprofessional. Asking in a thread if you can share info that you already are sharing is downright wrong. You should be talking to Andrew first before revealing all this stuff . You act like this is all about you and man you are loving the spotlight. But this is Andrews pin and you keep standing in front of it and revealing stuff without even checking with him. Andrew is one of the nicest guys out there but you are totally taking advantage. Is his marketing plan to just have Aurich spill stuff ahead of reveal? I doubt it man. Your time to talk is soon but just do your boss a favor and respect him a bit more. He's got me on ignore so how about someone else copy and paste this.

Was about to (deleted)

Forget it. Made a 2016 resolution to be nice to everyone, Kaneda included, for 1 month.
I hate January!

#4047 8 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

To be perfectly honest I think showing just the playfield is probably the worst possible way to show a pin.

Agreed.
While I liked most of the "teaser" closeups of parts of the PF, I did not like at all the first complete PF images I saw.
A populated PF would help. You need the plastics and toys to really decide whether it fits. The artist knows, we don't.
Lighting may help as well. Showing the PF with the lit LCD screen is already an improvement.

Passing judgment until then.

#4126 8 years ago
Quoted from rai:

Last PF art that I didn't hear a negative peep about was Metallica.

I don't remember much criticism about Kiss artwork? (maybe the three Pro/Pre/LE cabinets being too similar?)
You have to admit it was a nice hommage to the Bally version.

1 month later
#5024 8 years ago
Quoted from rubberducks:

I think pf art and some plastics' art may be different. It'll be functionally identical though.

Gameplay is the same (as far as I know).

I saw a red FTLE cabinet. All I can say is that the glossy finish of the LE cabinet is really nice. I did not see the Pro side by side to, but the LE looked superb.

If I could afford it, I would buy one single black LE cabinet with the giant second screen and use "normal/pro" playfields for game swap.

I saw that too... Based on these images I don't like it either.
- The black cabinet looks better to me.
- Would probably also prefer the one with Aurich' backglass and a smaller second LCD (or no LCD at all in the cabinet).

#8445 7 years ago
Quoted from iceman44:

Now if you prefer the super duper STANDARD version. Which is clearly marked "standard", its only $6450, how about that?

Quoted from SadSack:

I was thinking this exact thing before I read your post. Perhaps the a controller for the light matrix could be supplied so that your wall mounted spare game could be in full attract mode. That would be much better than a cardboard shipping container laying on the floor.

The problem is that we are talking about a populated playfield, that would collect dust for weeks, if not months, while being displayed on the wall. Unsure if that would be very healthy in the long run?

Now you could imagine a cocktail table with a transparent box and the same controller for the light matrix...

Fiber was not ready at the time and shipped without per my request.

Quoted from Join_The_Cirqus:

Plaque and Fiber will come soon, not a big deal to me anyway

So... let me summarize. Feel free to correct when necessary.

You received a "Black" Alien 10 days ago.
Advertise it.
Then accomplish a DIY green trim and install LE side panels.
Show the box as if it was just arrived. As if a second game arrived.
Call it a LE although it has no fiber ramps, no plaque and no specific trim.
Basically, what I see is a regular game with LE side panels, right?
Anything else LE specific?

Like the last 300 posts in this thread!

Point taken. Here is some first hand information then. Click on quote to know when it was posted.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

We are nearly at the stage where we can show you some backglass art and sideart - and as soon as we get official approval, we will post images here.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

We want to show a working version of Alien within the first quarter of 2016 - and this could even be in January.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

At our last team meeting, we all agreed on a schedule that should see Alien Pinball complete by mid August. Pending approval by Fox of the finished game, then we expect to start production in September.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

Essentially, nothing has changed, and we feel we are on schedule (…)Subject to a speedy approval, we still intend to start manufacturing games in September this year, with the first games shipping out by the end of October 2016.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

The plan is to begin production in September and to begin shipping games by the end of October

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

Part of this challenge is ramping up the production processes over the coming weeks to meet our target of producing 100 games a month by the end of this year. We have hired the necessary people with the knowledge and experience to make this happen.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

Shipping as many Alien games this year, as possible, is our number one objective.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

Everyone in the company, and involved with the company, is working flat out to release the first 20 Alien Pinball Standard Edition games in early December. 10 more games are due to follow before our 2 week Christmas/New Year shutdown (16th December - 2nd January).

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

The 20 Standard Edition games should now be ready to ship within 2 weeks of us returning on 2nd January.

Quoted from HeighwayPinball:

SEs will start shipping in January. Kits will definitely start shipping in February, but could still make the end of January. LE production starts January and will ship in February

Well... kind of. "Home made LE".
One of Andrew last desperate attempts to convince Aliens LE were shipping. Read the posts that followed to understand what was done.

Note: my understanding is that LE numbers were not given in chronological order - one could pick a number if available. So #2 is not necessarily #2 for production?

Full Throttle (LE) € 7495 (€ 8295)
Alien (LE) € 7795 (€ 8995)
FT kit € 5595
Alien kit € 5995

A FT owner interested in Alien SE would only save 1800 euros by ordering a kit... 23%. The kit now represents 77% of the cost of a full game!

As if HP itself does not believe anymore in the kit concept...

4 weeks later
#16720 6 years ago
Quoted from MK6PIN:

Regardless, I doubt that many bought a Standard, as the pricing early on wouldn't have warranted it, vs LE.

In my case, I was more interested in a SE than in the LE. I found the beacons ugly as sin.
Anyway... moot point: my own experience with the predator debacle convinced me to stay out of Alien preorder...

#16742 6 years ago
Quoted from pinballrockstar:

I think the Alien kit will give them big income, way less work than building an entire pin.
The modular system is a winner.

Strongly disagree.

And that's coming from someone who actually believed in this concept. I will soon or later move to a smaller house and downsize my lineup to 1-2 games. A modular system is something I am interested in.

Except that the new Heighway Pinball price system does *not* work. The initial ballpark figure (Andrew did not give exact prices) was 60% of the full machine. That was acceptable (but already outside my comfort zone). Now a kit is priced here in the same range as a Stern pro (5995€ for an Alien kit, 5595€ for FT... 75% of the full SE price according to http://www.rs-pinball.at) Simply said, it seems the new HP team just does not want to sell kits.

Add to that that Full throttle's computer cannot handle Alien... one has to upgrade it. Seeing Game #2 incompatible with game #1 is not exactly encouraging.

The day I buy a modular pin, it will be a P3!
The day I buy a HP game, it's because I love it, not because it's modular...

Quoted from Mr68:

Looks like the back of Gary's pants are full from crapping himself at the sight of Alien.

Good joke.

There were 3 games grouped together in triangle at the EPC in Sweden this weekend: SW Prem, Alien and Dialing In.
Judging from feedback from the people who played all three (me included), if he crapping himself it is more likely because of DI. The direct comparison between SW and DI is (IMO) very painful for Stern.

Alien appeals to a different audience - (s)low run, boutique feel (for better or worse) and currently not a competitor for Stern.

#17799 6 years ago

Moderation question: I wonder if we should create a separate "Alien troubleshooting" thread, or ask owners to post their questions or describe issues in the club thread?
Finding the right answer will be super difficult later in a thread with over 17,000 posts...

#17814 6 years ago
Quoted from MK6PIN:

There are scattered topics on this one ( I started the “LE#” thread), but think it’s time for a Fresh “ Alien, official Club thread”, and fresh repair thread ( the hate, refund, etc. threads will roll accordingly).

OK then - anyone is welcome to start a troubleshooting thread. Once created, tech questions / problems / repairs should rather be posted there than here.

Thumbs up to Rubberduck's post. Just wanted to add he's not inventing things. People working for Andrew were surely screwed more than anyone else.

About the new investors... Their mistake was probably (as successful businessmen) to imagine there was a certain level of competence in the way things were managed before the take over.

Their communication may suck, but it's nothing short of a miracle they accepted to invest in this company.

They should have realised what and who they were dealing with, but it was much worse than they or most here feared.

Myself included. There were things I learnt after the takeover - like a conversation I had with a friend of mine had about HP's "factory" when he visited the place. Guy's background is in manufacturing and he confirmed the whole thing was a sad joke. The new owners probably had to redesign every step in the manufacturing process.

If it makes you feel any better, the investors were bullshitted by Andrew just as much as you guys were and they too fell for it hook, line and sinker. And those guys lost a serious amount of money. Ouch.

The "beauty" of Andrew's scam was the NDA nearly everyone approaching Heighway Pinball had to sign... JPop's style.
Those in the know would not speak (*); the others were left with rumors or hearsay. Only a few posts like yours pointed to indisputable (yet disputed or downvoted) evidence.

(*) Andrew was monitoring these threads - and not only on pinside - very closely.

Hell, I am ready to match the cost of a first consultation myself!
Say up to $200?

If you're ever visiting Niagara Falls Canada, look me up.

Here is an interesting place for investing in Hydrofoils...

Quoted from PanzerFreak:

If Johnny Depp wanted $100k to use his voices from all 5 films JJP should have paid it in my opinion, sounds like a "deal" considering the importance of the character. Over 2,000 games that's only $50 per game and would have added heavily to immersing the player in the POTC world.

Depends what you get for that price. If he's doing custom made call-outs... yeah, great, no doubt.
Just a few quotes from his movies? Then you'll have to check the movies to see if it's worth it.

In the meantime... a street artist has just repainted a technical building near my workplace. Love it!

Quoted from fastpinball:

there was a point in time when Andrew thought he could help Skit-B out of the Predator mess!

True. I met Andrew at least twice, and he told me he was considering "salvaging" the licence after Skit-B exploded.

Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

Did he ask you for pre order money or to buy shares in this new exciting venture?

He did not dare. He (probably) knew I already "invested" $4,750. Also told him I considered the Predator licence to be radioactive after this debacle! (my own opinion of course - but I doubt other "investors" would preorder again for the same game! Fool me once, shame on you...)
