Good evening everyone. I'm joining the club tomorrow and I wanted to thank you all for maintaining such a vibrant community. I've been reading through all of the ups and downs of this story and to be honest if it wasnt for the support of this thread I would have been too scared to bring such an exotic pin into my collection.
I'm curious if anyone knows of someone who would do service calls in nor cal on an Alien(s) pin if I ever needed one. Chris the pinball pirate said he would be willing to try to help with any issues but I could tell he was a little apprehensive. He told me basically that unlike nearly every other pin in the world, this one might be beyond his abilities especially due to lack of support and parts. Let me know if anyone knows anyone or has any advice or input for me. I pick up the machine in 12.5 hours and I am so excited i probably wont sleep
Thanks

Quoted from skyknight320:

After a few items are fixed this Pin is just like any other to maintain. Remember it's plastic parts and electronics being hit with a steel ball! What could go wrong? It's a great RARE title that's a blast to play. Enjoy the heck out of it and remember "Don't worry, Be happy!"

Awesome. I like the way you think!

#27466 3 years ago

Her she is. I'm about to power it up. Cross your fingers and hope nothing rattled loose during the drive home!

Hi all,
I've had my alien se for a few days now and all is well except for the xenomorph lower jaw seems to be malfunctioning. It does not go up and down but hangs up and just winds the motor. When I wiggle it, it moves. I can move it up with my finger when its winding and it stops but after a few seconds the jaw seems to fall a little and start winding the motor again. The ball grabbing inner jaw works and goes in and out and grabs the ball so the problem appears to be with the hinged jaw not moving right. I'm running 1.2 code. I tried disabling the xenomorph but that only seemed to affect the ball grabber and not the hinged lower jaw because it's still trying to move. Any ideas?

#27505 3 years ago

Yes. I will take you up on that servo. Maybe message me and we can set it up. The lower jaw definitely does not want to bring itself up to the closed position. Its stalls just before it closes and keeps running. If I lift it a bit. The motor stops but soon it drops a little and stalls and the motor keeps running. When I power it off the jaw drops all the way down and the process repeats when I power it on again. Bottom line... the jaw is not opening and closing but it's trying, stalling and the motor keeps running even after I disabled the xenomorph in the settings. Thanks for any ideas

#27512 3 years ago
Quoted from MK6PIN:

True...worry about the "hearing motor still going" comment though. Hope you are right..

Thanks to everyone. I will remove the assembly this weekend and take a look. The jaw is definitely trying to move up and down but not moving smoothly or staying closed without dropping slightly and then the motor starts again. Motor only stops winding when I assist it up with my finger a little but then drops a little again starts up again. Its constantly running when the game is powered on unless I jiggle it and assist the jaw up to the closed position, then it stops running for a second until the jaw falls a bit. It feels like maybe a sprocket is missing some teeth causing it to not achieve it's full up and down positions. I went ahead and ordered the complete xeno assembly from pinball life just in case and for reference.

#27514 3 years ago
Quoted from Averell:

To remember, servo drive should be changed to better version with metal gear inside.
The driver board should be modified to interchange the servo drive without changing the connector.
Improvement of the gear "tongue" is recommended and some xeno boards are needed for spare.
[quoted image]

[quoted image]

Awesome. I ordered a bunch of parts off pinball life when I was waiting for my machine to show up, but i did not see any xeno boards. Do you know where i can purchase?

#27515 3 years ago

I have two quick questions about how the xeno jaw should operate when functioning properly. Can someone tell me how it is supposed to behave? Does it open and close just once to allow the "tongue "to go in and out or does it open and close repeatedly in a chewing type motion?
Btw, this is my first time ever using message boards so please educate me if my etiquette is lacking. Thanks again everyone

#27517 3 years ago

Also, is it normal that my jaw still wants to move even after I disabled the xeno in settings. I'm guessing that disabling the xeno only affects the extending "tongue" ball grabber. Lmk . Thanks!

#27522 3 years ago
Quoted from colonel_caverne:

Did you check stand-up targets don’t block jaw move?

Yes. The jaw is making contact with the stand up target. But doesnt seem to be catching. When the machine is powered on the jaw stays at its lowest position. Then when I start a game it raises up 2 0r 3 millimeter till it is just above the stand ups and then it stops there and the motor keeps going with the jaw never going any further up into the closed position unless I help it with my finger and even then when I bring it all the way up it only stays for a moment and drops down 2 millimeters and stalls with the motor running. Thanks for all the feedback. I'm going to hold off on trying to describe this problem better until I can open it up. Thanks everyone. I will also ask some of my more tech savvy friends to read through this so they can help me in person.

#27523 3 years ago
Quoted from Averell:

The jaw is controlled in different ways... just open to catch the ball, or breathing while playing.
You can test all these functions in the service menu.
The entire assy needs to be adjusted very carefully and the drive motor needs to be calibrated, otherwise it will crash the game.

Quoted from Faust:

Also:
If you press the jaw down by hand, the servo pushes it up again (when functioning normally), I think also when you have disabled the xeno.
So you will feel counterforce if you press on the jaw (unless machine is switched off or cable unplugged of the xeno
I think Averell means it is nice to have some of those spare chips, because they may break (heatsink can fall off).
The complete boards... in my opnion you don't need them.
The chips: I have 5, Averell has a bunch. I think if one breaks and you post in the forum you get a new one from one of the members. They are cheap.
I can send you 1 if you want (no costs).
If anyone else wants one too, PM me. I got 5, can give away 4.

She is definitely not "breathing" right

#27527 3 years ago
Quoted from MK6PIN:

Agreed.....snatch that thing out and repair/ adjust where you can actually get to it...not hard to get it right and kind of cool to have the xeno up there watching it "eat"...lol...2 types of metal geared stepper motors, btw. both affordable ( 1 overkill..metal casing).
Post your findings...another Xeno to be conquered!!!!

Sounds awesome. Thanks. So when we open it up we will want to determine if it's a metal gear or plastic? If its plastic i need to order a new stepper motor with the metal gear? No problem. Do you know where I can buy one? The original owner of this game told me this was a later production machine from cointaker, if that means anything. I'm working on video of the problem now and will open it up this weekend when my complete xenomorph assembly arrives in the mail from pinball life. If I dont need the new xenomorph assembly I will just add it to the bin of parts for this machine that I'm assembling for down the road if needed. Thanks !

#27528 3 years ago
Quoted from bcd:

When disabled in the settings, the game code running on the CPU board won't send commands to the controller. But the controller itself is totally unaware of this, and might be trying to calibrate or initialize on its own.
Also note, even while disabled, you can go into test mode and run the diagnostic commands to test the different functions (some that are jaw only and some that extend the tongue).

Ohhhhhhhkkkkkk. Are you saying that with my xeno disabled in settings the jaw is not being instructed to move so the attempted movement and motor running is not being called for by gameplay and may be a recalibration attempt because of malfunction or breakage? Thanks. This is good stuff!

Quoted from dpeck3:

Just let me know if you get in a jam with needing a servo. I have a bag of them.

Awesome. PM sent.

#27556 3 years ago
Quoted from MK6PIN:

The infamous stepper motor issue. Can you take a pic of what is in your game now? Early ones had plastic gearing...there are 2 metal geared ones that both work great. Super cheap. To do it right, I'd recommend pulling the entire assembly off (only 4 screws), and you can rebuild/ test as required. I actually made a little jig to put mine above the backboard (easy) so I could actually plug it in and cycle on the game. Wanted to understand how the thing worked (early days) and really helped me dial in the jaw so it behaved.
Not as scary as you might think......

Here is a video of the jaw with the xeno disabled and how its behaving. Also pictures of the little gear attached to jaw with the stiff wire that makes it move up and down

#27558 3 years ago

The video show all that the lower jaw does regardless of whether or not the xeno is turned off in setting. Also does the same thing in test. Thanks

Quoted from dpeck3:

Just let me know if you get in a jam with needing a servo. I have a bag of them.

#27560 3 years ago
Quoted from razorsedge:

The plastic gear inside the servo is stripped. It is trying to get the internal pot to it's desired position and just keeps homing but because the gear is stripped can never achieve the set position (in this case jaw closed).
This is why the servo motor stops "chasing" when you manually lift the jaw closed to the position the software is trying for. Stripped gear just doesn't let it happen, so servo is stuck in a loop.

Is this the part that dpeck has offered me in prior post. Am I correct that I need to replace that blue plastic box with the arm attached to it? Once I obtain the part can someone tell me how it connects to the head assembly. I can see where it attaches to the jaw via the arm. Thanks everybody

I like the blue beacons that were installed on my SE. Great in a dark room and still look good in daylight with the game off.

There's a distributor that sells red, blue, green and yellow.

Hi Group. I have been noticing that green light is shining up through the inserts on the aliens mode inserts. It's coming up from the green lights on the board at the bottom of the cab below the inserts. Very distracting. Is this normal and can I do anything about it? Thx Brothers and Sisters.

Quoted from razorsedge:

Seen this discussed a long time back... some games had the white protective mask still on the perspex that covers the cabinet power board. Leaving this on seemingly helped diffuse the green light a bit.
I printed Averells manual, put it in a pocket binder, and it now sits above those upon the perspex... multiple birds with one book!
*This light shield also doubles as a manual.

Nice. I have his manual in a nice folder ready to go. I will install it immediately.

Hi group. Hope everyone is having a great holiday so far.
I need some advice and opinions on the pros and cons to updating from the 1.2 code that is currently running on my standard edition. I purchased it in September and it runs like a clock. Let me know what you all think. The last thing I want to do is cause any problems. Thanks

#28121 3 years ago

Sorry. I hopped in without catching up. Seems like code updates is the topic of the evening. I'm finally considering updating since I got a very low number on the remake list. and now I'm just slightly less scared to monkey around with my original.

#28124 3 years ago
Quoted from Toppers:

Personally my 1.2 worked great. Updates to 1.3 for about 4 months with no issues and then my issue above. So not to sure.

Thanks. I may stick with 1.2, I wish you luck

#28162 3 years ago

Good morning group. Can someone tell me if the plastics along the back and sides supposed to be back lit? Mine are not but when I see pictures from other members theirs look lit from the back. I may have answered my own question because when I just now went to take a picture of mine looked lit from behind but it was just gi and insert lights reflected. Thanks

#28167 3 years ago
Quoted from Averell:

Sideblades left and right and backpanel are lit.
Check wiring, power supply and settings in the menu.

I'm putting up picture just to be clear. I'm asking about these side plastics and back plastic located in the space above the playfield and below the playfield glass. Are these backlit? I'm looking at your manual and I see on the cabinet i/o matrix 7 is back box lighting and 8 is cab side lights. I'm unclear if this is for this (pictured).

Welcome.
Here we are showing that our Digital Printed Playfields have Balls.
In this video we show that it is possible to digital print playfields without pooling, cracking and chipping. We were ask to produce Alien playfields for the Pinball Brothers, they didnt want to go cheap, they wanted quality playfields. In this video we tried extremly to achive pooling, chipping and cracking. The only thing we could destroy is our solid work bench.
Enjoy the video.

Sounds like things are coming together nicely in Italy. If anyone is interested in my original Alien SE by heighway let me know as I will be looking to move it out once my remake arrives. I would prefer trades but sale is a possibility also. Absolutely no shipping of any kind, but I can travel between Portland and LA. If you want to see the machine you can view the archived ad here on pinside from when I purchased it in September of last year

Quoted from dts:

I’m in the other boat. I planned to get a remake for a long time but now after owning an original for a couple of months, I’m not seeing why I’d want a remake. The cabinet is ridiculously cool, playfield LCD screen fantastic, illuminated side and back art stunning, huge backglass LCD, excellent apron mods and other upgrades. I think I’m good, unless the LV does something truly spectacular, but I’m not sure what that would be over the above features... I’m still in line for now, but am probably sending that money to GnR LE instead at this point.

I hear you. I'm super psyched for the magnet to set up the upper right flipper shot and I really like physical ball locks so I'm leaning towards the remake but maybe I will keep the original or maybe both. Such a great game, I'm really glad that more people will soon be getting the chance to experience it. It's hard for me to imagine the value dropping off too much on the originals because the remake being available for people to play should drive interest in all models. High tide and all ships raising or some shit.

Sooo, you love the game, purchased 3 months ago, but tried to sell once, archived, and now trying again as the unseen/ unplayed new one is your preference? I'm missing something here. Dont really care, just odd. My guess is it's a late build and plays perfectly, correct?

Sorry Mark. I dont think I was clear about my history. I have never tried to sell it, I am referring to the archived SOLD ad from when I bought it from a fellow pinsider in September of last year. If my remake doesnt ever materialize or if I like the original more I will keep the original. I REALLY LOVE THIS GAME! I appreciate your opinion and I'm very thankful for all the help you have given me and everyone else with our machines, but no funny stuff, I promise
