So I was inspired by this thread
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/cabinet-airbrushing-tutorial#post-2624883
and decided to give it a try. I'm pretty new to airburushing, but I've got the standard Harbor Fright airbrush compressor and their quick-change gun kit.
I can't seem to get any paint to spray. My pressure runs on the high side of 20psi when I squeeze the trigger, but watching the paint in the tube, it just doesn't go up. I've twisted both fittings (on the gun and on the jar) and the only thing that happens is I sometimes get bubbles in the jar, but no spray.
I've tried thinned cheap acrylics and also straight Createx paint. I've tried different jars, but still the same.
So like I said...what am I missing?
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

Airbrush does take a little bit of a knack to get it down to a science. One of my best guesses would be is check the needle in the brush, if it is pushed in way too hard (forward) it will not allow the paint to flow around it. Secondly make sure your paint is well thinned out, I use denatured alcohol to do so. If it gets too thin you'll have to recoat more then once or twice to get the desired effect.

Also try spraying at 30psi.

However from the bubble in the bottle it does indicate a blockage so check the needle and paint for thinness.

Try spraying some straight thinner. Then you know its not to thick. Do you have air coming out of the gun? Is the needle moving when you pull the trigger?

Yeah, I've got a cheapo "standard" needle type airbrush, too, but I think I didn't clean it properly once, and now it only works sometimes. The kind I'm talking about here doesn't have a needle:
http://t.harborfreight.com/quick-change-airbrush-kit-93506.html
As I see it, one nozzle sprays the air across the other nozzle, creating a Venturi and a vacuum, sucking the paint up through the tube. I've heard pinsiders say that this setup works fine as long as its just larger, masked areas (no detail), but it simply isn't working for me.
I thinned the paint about as much as I dare, but it still doesn't spray. How thin do I have to go?
Any pointers are appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Is it single action or dual action airbrush? Single action will have a adjustable fluid nozzle that moves back & forth adjusting the spray pattern. A dual action, when the button is depressed releases air, then pull back towards you to adjust the spray pattern. If nothing happens make sure the nut holding the needle is finger tight. If the needle moves freely & your paint is not too thick, you have a blockage or air leak. There are air holes on the lid of the jar. Make sure those are open. Start with small amounts of paint in a cup.
Do not use solvents as they will destroy your O-rings faster. Shoot water for testing. Show us the model you are using. Been doing this for 40yrs, many variables to cover. Hang in there.

Sometimes I can get plain water to spray, but sometimes not. Are these things that touchy?
There is lots of air coming out of the nozzle on the handle, but no media (paint or water) being pulled up into the tube (or maybe just half way).
Twisting the nozzles on both the handle and the cup rarely seems to make it better, but sometimes results in just blowing air into the cup (bubbles).
Humph....

Try just spraying water.

If that does not flow, then you know you are clogged.

Does air come out when you press the button? You can feel it blast on your hand?

Look through the nozzle and make sure you can see daylight. If you can't then soak it in solvent and poke it clear with a bristle.

With the cup full of water, press the trigger and start raising the nozzle towards the air outlet.

At some point, you will hit the sweet spot and water will be drawn from the cup.

The sweet spot is only about 1/2 of a turn of the nozzle, so don't go so fast that you overshoot it.

Lee,
This type of brush I guess would be considered more of a "sprayer". No needle, no "action", just a trigger valve and a nozzle. $10 Harbor Freight kit with 5 cups, making it "quick change".
I do have a more traditional dual action airbrush, but you may have solved my reason for it not working very well, too...solvents on the o-rings....I've had that thing apart so many times that now I'm pretty familiar with how it operates.

Vid, I think you got it. I was overshooting the sweet spot. It seems to be spraying pretty well now.
Will this type of gun spray straight Createx, or will I need to thin that, too? If I do have to thin it, is water OK to use?

#10 8 years ago

I just looked at it. The fluid adjustment is on the top of the jar. Tighten it down all the way then slowly unscrew it while depressing the air trigger. You should get media at some point. Yes these are very touchy. Patience grasshopper. If you still have bubbles then check for blockage. Make sure of airflow to the jar. Should be a little hole in the top. Sometimes the gasket & lid will not line up.

Vid beat me to it. You should be able to shoot straight Createx. Find some old pantyhose, cover the jar top with it & strain the paint. Always strain your paint! Make sure you have a moisture trap between the compressor & gun.

Excellent!

It will shoot it no problem.

Ammonia is a better cut than water.

Get the clear, not the blue stuff.

Thanks, guys!

With your tips, I was able to get it going. Turned out pretty nice for an airbrush newbie.

Ha! Excellent work- I was expecting you to show us your first try on some small part.... Nope. Cabinet- CHECK!

Hi Grange,

I started out with the Harbor Freight brushes too but quickly upgraded to gravity feed brushes. I really like a gravity feed brush better. I bought a couple of these and like them much better because they are easy to clean and change colors. They also spray nice.

Iwata is my weapon of choice. I have the same HP-SB from 1983. Yes 1983. I prefer not to use gravity feeds because you can't put them down without spilling. A removable cup or bottom mount jar can be set down. Nice work for your first time Grangeomatic.

A nice Iwata is perfect to airbrush porn oldschool.

I gave her Zebra stripes on one occasion & Tiger on another. Using Badger body paint. She gave me her card & some great memories. Ahh..the good old days.

Seriously? I'm talking about entry level stuff not a $100 plus airbrush. We'd all love to have an Iwata air brush but they are spendy for someone new to it... the $14 airbrush I posted sprays really nicely -- you don't need an expensive airbrush to do playfield work. Painting Porn may be different though - no idea I'm not that talented but I'm willing to learn!

The one I listed works well... and as far as setting them down - I have a cleaning pot where one sits while i'm working with the other. I also found a roll of masking tape and/or a brush stand holds them fine.

OP:

Fwiw it may be the airbrush. I got the same cheap HF one and it has never worked right. Tried to return it the day after I bought it and was refused. Ended up getting the slightly more expensive one and it has actually worked!

Relax. I never suggested buying my rig. You bought a knock off of mine. Look at it closely. I've had mine for 30yrs. & it works/looks like new. Bet you can't paint the underside of her breasts without spilling your load. Or not squirt at all. Gravity's a bitch. She can't sit while I hose her down.
So you have two? What do you use the other for? How much was that?
Did you learn anything from Vid or me?
Just curious.
