I am expanding my paint work, and am looking to upgrade my compressor from a pancake style, to a 20 gal upright.

Can anyone recommend a very high quality compressor in this range? I would like a 60 gallon, but don't have the space.

I will be leaving the 20 gallon outside, and building an enclosure around it. Price is not my concern - durability and warranty is.

    Thanks!

Go with belt driven and oiled pistons. more than 30-60% less noise. as for brand, im not too partial, i have had PUMA 5 years now and it's just fine. youll need a dedicated 15 amp circuit for 20 gallon. Not sure if you have any of those country supply/ rancher stores up that way, if so try looking there. The big box stores do not carry these type units any longer (at least around here). They choose to carry the noiser 300psi tanks with the teflon pistons. try a compressor store as well. And take care if putting outside in winter, they can ice up and break things.

The PUMA compressors are really good and have been around for years. I would also probably avoid one from a big box store or Harbor Freight. They seemed to have really degraded in quality.

You might even want to search for a used one on Craigslist that has easily replaceable parts.

agree, there are definitely some brands and places to avoid. A lot of the compressors like Dewalt are made by rand ingersol (I think), so you may want to research who manufactures what. I would Be careful on craigslist, you wont be able to tell often if a tank is rusted out or badly maintained. that said, you could find a great deal there.

Thanks guys, I'll look into PUMA. I have only ever used consumer pancakes or on the opposite end, stand alone 60 gal pro rigs.

Yes, be careful. Got a no brainer deal ($30) on an older speedaire 20 gal horizontal with single stage twin 2-3/4" bore cast pump. Completely restored the pump but the tank was a little more rusted inside than I bet my life on. Ended up having to buy a brand new asme coded 20 gallon tank, new flywheel and all the other little bits (rebuild kit etc). For the price of this restored 20 gallon setup i could have bought a new porter cable 20 gallon cast iron pump setup. Nice thing is I get 5.7 CFM at 90psi out of this little bad boy. Just enough I think to run HLVP for playfields.
