With the score reels done time to move onto the stepper motors.

First I did the frame selection stepper, then the controller stepper. Both are almost identical and both moved but were sticky.

Full tear down and clean, plus file any contacts and adjust if needed.

The Q-tips and rags are just from the score reels.

Everthing with a red x is done.
Just have to keep working through it. Every single contact on this board will get cleaned and adjusted when I'm done.

Had a free 10 minutes after dinner.
    Decided to do this relay.
Dont know the proper terminology so bear with.
Both actuator plates were dislodged so I removed them to find the surface of the cores all rusty. So a quick sand of the cores and install the plates correctly.
Then clean and adjust switches as always.

So much work but so worth it. Best dollar game ever.

    #108 4 years ago

I think this old game was 'lucky' it found it's way into the hands of someone with the skills to bring it back to life so thoroughly. Also lucky you could get a repro backglass for it. Where you able to rebuild or replace that large ball release coil?

    #109 4 years ago
    Quoted from swillie:

Its seems to be working still. It locked on when I turned the game on for a couple seconds before disassembling the head.

The backglass is from BG Resto.

you're using too much 'stuff' on those stepper plates. more is not better.

Good to know, I'll clean some off.

I thought the same. I always thought it was a light coat on the steppers

Finally finished cleaning and adjusting everthing and did a test run with the board out of the head.

    ITS ALIVE!!!
Game booted up and plays great.

Have 1 question and one favor. Hoping that clay @cfh, or someone else at the VFW can help.

How often is the bonus supposed to switch from under 7 to over 7. Mine only does this once a game.

Second I have a picture of the vfw one and it has score cards under the glass.

Any chance someone at the vfw could scan it for me or take it to a copy shop and make me a copy? I'd be willing to pay for it and for your time.
Please please clay I'm begging here.

The most amazing part of this game is that even at 65 years old and long term storage in a wet basement every single part is original.
All coils and moving parts are original and work great.

Even the black rubber parts are still soft after 65 years.
The quality of parts was easy better back then.

Should have it fully assembled this week.

    #115 4 years ago

    looks gorgeous...congrats, Mitch!

    #116 4 years ago

VFW guys a close up pic of what these say would even be helpful.

Once per game is what I remember for the bonus.

Congrats on seeing it through to functionality, it’s awesome.

Played a first full game today.
Plays good but definitely has bonus issues

It looks beautiful!! I'm sure you will get the quirks sorted. I'm very envious of your game, wish it was mine but happy for you. I can make out most of that score card ftom the pic of Clays, you could almost be able to make one...need that last line on the right side. I spent an hour looking for a pic online, even checked videos of the VFW but nobody panned in on it.

    #120 4 years ago

I do think i remember the bonus starting under 7, then switching to over seven one time later in the game. This was like 2 years ago at the VFW though, lol.

    #121 4 years ago

Should be under 7 in frames 1-3, over 7 in frames 4-6. At least that’s how the VFW game plays.

    #122 4 years ago

if clay doesn't have a scanner, I'll see if he'll let me steal the score card for a few days the next time that I'm at the club and scan it for you

    #123 4 years ago

    Cab corners and screws painted.
One of my first painting attempts.

Last piece to go back on.

Your nearly done! Awesome work taking it all down and bringing it all back. Thats the only way to guarantee long term function. I bet the day after you have it working perfect it will run for years trouble free. I would enjoy one of these as they are compatible more or less with pinball and not 25 ft long!

What are the dimensions compared to a pinball. Not looking for x.xx inches just a relative asssement of if this could fit into the space used by a pinball more or less.

    Great looking game!

Awesome thread, Mitch! Congratulations on bringing this beauty back to its former glory.

Your score reel cleaning technique will be very helpful once I decide to clean the ones on my Hi-Fly. Thanks for that!

With the game 90% done my attention has swung to a new machine I just got, as it sometimes does.

It's a 1962 bally spinner. Bought it "working" but as I assumed there is some issues. So I'm digging into it and figured I'd share some of it here.

So it turns on and the spinner spins but the motor that turns to activate the hole plugs to go up to block the holes without players wasnt working.
Might as well go through every mech and contact and do a full service.

It's a pretty simple game and doesnt even have a transformer as everthing runs on 120v.

So I removed the motor and gear box and it was seized up.
Split the gear box open and all the grease had hardened up.

Guess it's time for a clean and re grease.

Quick question would you use red bearing grease or super lube. I'm leaning toward bearing grease.

    Bearing grease or super lube?

Thanks for posting the Spinner repairs! Mine has a couple minor issues; curious to see what you run into.

    #133 4 years ago

Bathroom and sink cleaned up with isopropyl.
    Gears lubed with super lube.
Plugged it into the wall, spins good now.

    I upvoted the clean sink

Motor re installed in game. Jumped wall power to the Jones plug and motor working great.

Removed the balls and gave them a good clean with novus 2.

The spinning motor was sitting a little low and shaking badly side to side. Turns out all the rubber mounting bushings were hard and crumbling.

Replaced them with some rubber grommets from home depot did the trick.

Neat game, just stumbled onto the thread

    #144 4 years ago

Not to "re-rail" this thread but where is the epic head to head Lucky 7 match video that comes down to the last roll???

    #145 4 years ago

Zan was correct on the bonus. under balls 1-3, over balls 4-6.
Got a schematic too if you need one.

We have a spinner at the vfw. it was a fun toy for a while, but now everyone ignores it. does not seem to have repeat fun.

Got the Derby Roll going. This may compete with lucky7 for fun...

On the under balls 1-3 is it always 10 bonus?

    I have schematics coming soon.

    frames 1-2, under 7 is a bonus of 10, 7 is a bonus of 20
    frame 3, under 7 is a bonus of 20, 7 is a bonus of 50
    frame 4, over 7 is a bonus of 20, 7 is a bonus of 50
    frames 5-6, over 7 is a bonus of 50, 7 is a bonus of 100

working on recreating (and then reproducing) the instruction card

original (notice the 3 broken flourishes
    lucky-7 (original) (resized).jpglucky-7 (original) (resized).jpg

I still have a ways to go (trying to match the fonts originally used), but I should have it complete by the weekend and then send off the file to get reprinted on cardstock

given that the typography on this instruction card is really horrible, I will probably tweak the spacing to get everything looking a bit more natural (and nicer)

    Awsome thanks so much.

Just so strange they would print the under 7 50point bonus on the glass and never use it, but then again glass could have been made before the rule set.
