First ball I do the skill shot and go for the target bank. Main reason is to get two ships destroyed quickly to light and earn an extra ball. Nice if you can pull that off on Ball 1.

After Ball 1 I plunge to the lanes to get pop hits for Super Jets and for the bonus multiplier.
