I enjoy reading these threads, and I've had one or two I've authored. I'm going to tell the tale of my AFM's journey...

#2 10 years ago

Bought game, was supposed to be pretty close to flawless except for some SoL wear.
Pictures looked pretty!

Unfortunately on arrival day, it was pouring.

Game came with a new CC playfield...so that was good!

Pulled apart to move upstairs.
Love the look of "my machine barfed up its guts" before the wiring gets reconnected.

Cabinet does look decent for the most part. One side of the head needs to be redone.
SoL wear looks ugly as expected.

Little custom plastic repair.
Customized lighting arrangements.
And...nearly stripped playfield

Never seen one of these broken!
Trough showing some nice wear (others may call it "seasoning"
And, one of my favorites...the SoL bared for all to see. It, um, well, it was patched with I beleive a layer of bondo or something that was still pliable, and, this is great, rubber cement. When I pulled the cliffy off, it looked like someone taking a bite out of cheese pizza. Stringy.

And now starting to prep the new playfield. T-nuts in. Pop mounts in.

Pair of playfields...

And new pop bodies and light sockets ready to go....!

Keep it up! Looks like it should be a fun build. Nothing like investing your own sweat into a machine. Looking forward to progress.

#9 10 years ago

Having a blast with it...was really great to get those pops in. Now comes the daily wait for the mailman to bring goodies...
Tonight maybe I will wrestle the wiring back onto it....

How do you keep track of whats supposed to go where? I'd have a hell of a time rewiring these.

#11 10 years ago

I think everyone has their own methods, but the handful of times I've done it it's not bad...if you take your time.
My personal tips...
LOTS of pictures. From every angle. Pictures of every connector, fastener, how wires are routed, close up, wide angle...

I label everything with wire labels. Correspond the numbers to the switch or solenoid number in the manual. If things ever get really confusing, it's always nice to be able to see switch #23 and know where it goes.

Honestly though, it's easy. I never believed it when people told me, but the wires really fall back into place for the most part as long as you don't unbundle everything. Lay the harness on the new playfield and they fall pretty close to their correct locations. Time just needs to be spent making sure they aren't too tangled, but it's really not bad. Little intimidating, yea....and I think the first time I did it once I pulled the harness off was my big "Oh crap, what did I just get myself into" moment...but it passed!

Few of wiring harness....
Just started to get it moved into its new home, but 16 hour work days have made time in short supply!

Not the best pictures, but the first signs of life!
White LEDs don't photograph well in the dark!

Still on the tail end of a migraine from Sunday, and the bright just hurt!

#15 10 years ago

If this is the same machine I almost purchased recently (& I think it is), it's in much better hands than mine!

#16 10 years ago

Looks Great...Keep the pics coming!

#17 10 years ago

Some progress today so far...
First pic is the new pinbits strobe compared with the original...WOW!
Then some others of the progress. I need to take a break and prep the saucers for the bill ung kit.

#18 10 years ago

Getting there...mostly together...
Three saucers "ung'd", now just going through every switch and making it right.

Managed to overtighten a flipper bat, so I need to buy a new pawl for it.

Well, had a very productive few days and I'm pretty much down to just some final switch tweaks.
So without further drama, here she is..

The underbelly of the beast first

Very nice work! I'm envious. You did a superb job on that AFM.

#25 10 years ago

Thanks...I'm amazed how well this one came out. The only two outstanding things is that one corner of the head had some decals scraped, but was touched up with black. Not easily visible, but I did order a new set of head decals. Not sure if I want to pull the head and go through that whole process for minor scrapes.

And I have a sheet of invisiglass on order

#26 10 years ago

sweet! Very nice game, congrats!

#27 10 years ago

Thanks...actually hoping to have a chance to play it later today!
