AFM Mirco Playfield (gone over by Kruzman) Swap

New style trough installed. Needed to move the center grommets for both boards. Otherwise, direct swap.

Almost all mechanisms installed but shooter lane and pop bumpers. Changing the pop lighting leads to the regular/non-flat tin style. More on that later.

Long term durability is the goal so scrapped the tin lamp holders that often break and a real bitch to replace and not look like they weren’t due to the staples. I prefer the cleaner look stapled down, but this is easier to replace.

Supplied red Brite Caps installed and they work fine with the modified/cable tie use of the wire pop lamp holders. Will adjust these later out of the machine for brightness when testing the other lights.

Ramps are done as of tonight. Added the short protection to flashers while at it. Need to add some Mylar to playfield where ramp flaps sit. But test fits are good. The Starship Fantasy ramps are so nice and really thick vs. originals. And they fit perfectly including the parts that attach to them.

New switches are installed on the ramps and the middle ramp entry (installed in playfield but not ramp). 5 DB5’s down... 20 to go...

Didn’t get too much done as planned today. Had Takata airbags replaced in mustang today (they come to your house if you have speciality like Boss 302, Shelby, etc.), TDI needed to rotate tires, swap out spare wheels to get some new tires, chiro, and work.

Wrapped up the mothership and we lost Karolina. She has a new hiding place in my crappy house toolbox. But we got the blinky eyes so she’s happy.

Targets finished. Ended up using some aquarium tubing for T and I targets since the harness goes near the motor. Some extra abrasion resistance...

Lamp harness installed. We upgraded the GI to 1SMD CW frosted from CoinTaker
They were just a regular old LED 1 SMD labeled RP. Not sure whose they are. Ordered yesterday morning and they showed up today! Thanks guys! It doesn’t hurt when they’re pretty close by.

Thanks TaylorVA New rails are on and installed. The old ones had broken “wood tape” and some touch ups. The new ones finish it off so much nicer.

Solenoid harness is finished. Cleaned up motor/hardware and now in place. New 3 drop motor pivot points were very lightly coated with Super Lube. Note it does not work well as lubricant for your eyes. For soft swinging you will have to ask Brent.

New sling switches installed. The old ones can be cleaned up and work but wouldn’t do Ron’s work justice.

The rest of the targets and microswitches need swapped/soldered. I ran out of pop spoons so they’ll wait a few days. Rookie mistake for not having them on hand!

Honestly, I was more targeting Ron’s comments. Ron is at a master level and has worked with some of the best restorers that Pinside has never even heard of... I am surprised at how impressed he acted.

I think all real criticism is positive. (assuming its for real and not a personal thing or just trolling which this is not). Criticism definitely makes me pick up stuff that I didnt realize was important in the work I do.

I am not even close to a pf swap pro, I would say I rank in the homeowner category. I own 5 games that have new pfs done by others, and none of them have the detail of this posters work. So I am getting all goo'ey on this one because it looks awesome compared to my stuff, and to my expectations. I like the way everything is taken apart and cleaned or replaced. The games I have bought with pf swaps often have dirty wires and parts.

I never never show work in progress pics like this because the job is not done till its done. I would be willing to bet the poster will make those wires look good now after hearing some opinion. I Have never had an afm, but it shows my knowledge when I say so far everything looks good to me. If I have time I may research some other swap work and see if I notice a difference. One of my life goals is to start doing pf swaps and full game resto's until I get good enough that I can do it professionally. I am definitely not going to do any until I have the skills to match my pfs, because that is the reason I want to do full game restores, to compliment my pfs.

I’m a big fan of the work dmacy does and know him personally. From speaking with him over the years, he puts up this many pictures of the process to help other people that might be stuck or are missing a picture.

I know it would have helped me if there was this level of information when I tried doing my Star Trek. There was always that one picture I missed or forgot to take.

Reminder to always triple check when disassembly. The bell armature looked ok. The riveted end was spinning so had to order one. The end is a bit mushroomed anyway and used every ball so makes sense to spring the $8. Part number is A-6306-2. Spring is 10-135 and I use new ones anymore. It’s a common used one and worth having a handful. I’m almost out...!

@spyderturbo007 I couldn't agree more. I haven't know @dmacy as long but I've followed his work and it's pretty incredible when you see it in person. The worst part is the cabinet isn't restored yet. Probably going to end up with a new cabinet and use this one for another project, maybe another @dmacy PF swap??

Finally wrapped up all the switches and soldering. Note there is 20 micro switches (I may have said 25 in this or the other thread) total. All were replaced including ramps, underside, etc.

New spoons were replaced and adjusted as they’re installed. Again, the Mirco playfield is dead on for all the switches. The pop switches do have a decent amount of room for adjustment. Vid has a great guide on the pop bumpers, switches and related. It’s been a bible as well as many of the other gals and guys on here.

It’s still a mess as I don’t tidy up the wiring until the end. Even then, once installed I’ve cut and had to reroute. I clear coat after base coat, but that’s me.

What’s left? Testing lighting & switches (with a ball), tweaking ramps, and remove from rotisserie to install the the rear back underside lamp holders, back panel and solenoids.

Thanks, I’m a amateur hack but the more pics our there the better. There’s a bunch of great documents of AFM swaps out there and I use them a lot too. There is always something to learn or you miss a picture.

You may have mentioned it earlier and I missed the post, but I see you used the mantis style hole protectors. I always suggest those for my cleared pfs (because they mount from under and dont obstruct any art or ball flow). On a used pf I always suggest the clifys. Though be super careful when installing because you can bend and crease them so easy. Cliffy has made them insane thin to not mess with the ball travel. Of course this is all my opinion.

The job is looking better and better.
Just to share an experience:
A friend bought 2 reproduction cabs, and stored them at my studio. We were checking them out and they looked awesome, and the price was amazing. I think they were like 800 each? something that made me think, I sure the hell wont be restoring a smoked cab in the future. So the story goes, he sold one to another friend and neighbor, to use for his cactus canyon. There were so many little issues, like drill, dimpling, and blocks missing. Things like the hole for the shooter rod was round rather than triangle, the start button hole was not recessed. What he thought was going to be a straight forward job turned in to a nightmare that took quite a bit of cobbling, I think it was 40 hours, not including the decals.

Now that I wrote it, I dont see much to take from this, but I will leave it as a bump

The work is looking awesome!! Its too bed you are not closer to michigan, I know it would be super cool to show the AFM at the "pin at the zoo"

Cleaned up the downtown but not fully finished. Had some “help” from Karolina but she didn’t want to hang around. The new back panel is set in place but permanent install will have to wait until it’s off the rotisserie.

Also the rear coils for the gates, a few GI bulb holders, and lane change inserts also have to wait until off the rotisserie. It’s nearly ready.

Testing of inserts completed. The wiring was in good shape as most of the game so it’s not a total shock. I did have the M target insert not light: typical LED wire needing spread to make contact with the holder.

Sorry I didnt answer this. I will do it publicly since a couple people want to know.
The kit cost 80 bucks. I made it to help folks be more confident installing my pfs, but it seems to help so much, I have got about 10 letters of thanks after using it. The kit is in conjunction with the process of removing just enough clear before drilling, so that you dont have to drill thru clear coat. It comes with 11 different sized and shaped dremmil bits so you also can use it for every ehere you have to drill or screw in to the pf, and star roll over inserts that are clogged with clear, or any where you may need to grind down the clear where it may be too thick. On recessed t nut holes, use it to remove the clear so the teeth bite right in to the wood. Also and most important there are bits to remove the clear from the countersunk holes for the pop bumpers.
It comes with a glue kit also, with 6 applicators. Its not necessary but after I remove the clear, I pre drill, then I run a drip down the inside wall of the clear. when it hits the bare wood, it quickly wicks under the clear all around the hole locking it down for the future. also you do the same thing if you made a mistake and lifted the clear off the surface (which happens a lot on a stock repro pf without my clear. ) Somewhere in the archives there are pics I showed on my monthly thread of a drilled hole where the drill bit lifted the clear from not using the dremil to remove it first, and 2 drips of the glue wicked under the clear and made the halo of lifted clear disappear.
also the kit comes with a tool to measure drill bits, screws, anything round. A stone to clean the bits, 1oz of glue and 6 applicators.
The kit is fairly simple, but the proceeds really help me with keeping the lights on at the studio.

Second Ron’s kit. It will last you a long time. It makes the job simple and stress free. If you do any playfield swap once it’s worth it!

We thought about adding some green lights to back light the T and I targets. Not sure how to make it work with those inserts but I wanted to get the wiring/lamp holder/LED’s ready. Here’s it tested. For now the wiring will be there but not connected. Turtle can add it later as he wants or just add to the GI. It looks more impressive in person then the pictures.

This is the back lower area after installing the GI holders, lane change insert holders and gate coils. I had to tweak the gate coils to work properly. Just tweaking the spring and coil allowed it to work: down at rest and up at energizing.

I like the lights behind the targets!
Have you ever thought of installing plugs or connectors in line, for the assemblies like the flippers? It sure would be nice to be able to remove the assembly nice and easy to work on it.

I have but haven’t done the connectors only due to the time and expense to set them up. I’ve done a few but usually it’s not that big of a deal to let a coil hang and do the repair. But that’s me and most collectors. If I had machines on route I’d absolutely do this to speed the process up and have the remote repair ability. It gets pricey when you do a playfield, have it redone correctly, new plastics, ramps, various other parts, etc I personally focus away from that.

Playfield is all but completed. The Bill Ung mod will likely be done by Turtle or us together. It looks fantastic. It may be the only one I’ve done they needs diapers when playing because it’s so nice it’s hard to see it ever getting played.

No fitment issues at all. Perfect fit and I’m not just saying that: They’re notched where needed and have all holes drilled perfectly. I still haven’t found what the small one is for.

@turtle brought the cabinet today so we could test everything out. Thankfully nothing major went wrong.

I had swapped the mother ship target wiring around wrong. *** Note if you buy these targets, I believe planetary is the only ones that sells these red targets or at least recently. They are the AFMR style that doesn’t have the extra lug. So you need to rob one from the old or another target. I also used a new harness for these. In addition, I had one diode swapped on the left sling, and swapped the left return and outlane switches.

We had some issues with the right slings needing tweaked to not stay closed too. Fortunately all the coils and lamps were great. Pictures simply cannot show how nice it looks and plays. It was a lot of hours going through, so many thanks to Turtle’s patience fixing my mistakes.

Chris from @sc93cobra Hot Rod Arcade is providing the ball shooter strike plate and apron wire form. We should have them early next week to finish off the look.

First a huge thanks to @dmacy, I had a blast today. Agreed, these pics are NOT doing this PF justice!!! I will try and get some better pics tomorrow once the light is better and post them here. Only minor issues here or there. Biggest issue now is the PF make the cabinet look like $#**.
