The DMD on my AFM is completely out. Fuses 601 and 602 checked out fine. I re-seated ribbon cables. I have a T2 and a STTNG, can I swap DMD's with one of those machines to check to see if the problem is the DMD itself?

#2 7 years ago

Yep. You can put the one from AFM in your other games to see if it works.

Usually DMD's don't suddenly die. Swap the DMD & see if that is it, but I'm betting it's the display driver board.

The problem more often is the HV section of the AV Board (top board).
You can test the HV quite easily with a DMM.
See: http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Williams_WPC#Testing_DMD_Controller_Power

If you find the voltages out, if you don't have experience reworking PCBs, send the board to a pro. They are too valuable to not be careful with. I can take care of it if you'd like.

I put the DMD from AFM into my T2 pin and it worked fine. I am sure the problem is with the HV as described above. There is a local guy near me that does PCB work. Thanks!

Have him replace the filter caps too.
160uf/150V.
220uf works fine
They sometimes fail and cause "rolling".

Upgrade to ColorDMD and you will not have to worry about fixing that HV.

#8 7 years ago

Is that true about the ColorDMD upgrade? I was wanting to do that upgrade anyway. Are you saying the HV does not have to be fixed for the color DMD to work? That seems weird but I am sure there is technical reason why that is the case. I am sure I would spend at least $100 to have PCB HV fixed.

This month my SS display started to run out of gas and my TotAN display is presenting the same issue as yours.... One color dmd is already on its way and I'll have the tech here next weekend.... let's see, it will depend on the diagnosis...

The ColorDMD runs off on 12 volts, no high voltage.

Absolutely true, the High voltage on the DMD driver board is there specifically to power the plasma display. If you install a color DMD, I would remove both fuses from the DMD driver board to completely shut down the high voltage section.
