Hi there

I was wondering if any of you had any success using the Pinbits advanced eddy controller in a SS machine for the crate sensor?
It is this one i am talking about: https://www.pinbits.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=188

I ordered one and installed it (socketed) in my SS, but it doesnt register any hits. The LED never fully turns off like the instructions says it should. It just sort of dims or flickeres really fast. And yes, C3 is removed (it was actually missing from the board already like it had never been mounted?).

As soon as i put the original chip back in the socket, the sensor works again. But using the replacement from Pinbits stops it from working.

In their instructions they write this:
2) Insert the new chip. The notch on the chip should be next to the LED. Make sure that all the pins are in the sockets.

But that doesn't make any sense, as there is no LED "next to the chip". So i assumed the orientation had to be the same as the original chip. And the original chip has the notch AWAY from the LED, closest to the edge of the board.

I tried contacting Pinbits via mail (2 times via different mail adresses), but unfortunately never got an answer....

Any tips, or similar experiences? Should i just try inserting it with the notch towards the LED, even though that seems wrong compared to the original?

No one have any experience with this?

I'm not sure this is the correct board for this chip.
Scared Stiff uses a pot.adjustable sensor and the ic in socket is a prox.sensor.

You ordered a microcontroller for the auto adjust board for CV or MB

I am pretty sure that the board in SS is also called an Eddy board (it is called that in the manual). And Pinbits wrote this on their website:

"The chip will work with all eddy boards, but requires that C3 be removed. You must also set your WPC features to "Auto Eddy Boards - No" if you have a Cirqus Voltaire. We recommend removing C3 on any eddy board as it serves only to delay readings."

I think that suggests that you should be able to use the controller chip in any eddy board?

Interesting...they are having you install it in the opposite direction of the original? Not sure about you, but sounds wrong to me.

FWIW, the majority of the issues with this board are either the potentiometer or sensor cable/wiring/connectors.

If the chip you installed is the same part number as the original board, and never installed backwards, I would have to assume it would work.

Ok, I have to ask this:

If the original chip and sensor are working...why are you messing with it?

Ahh, ok I did enough digging around to see what you did and what zaza was talking about. This chip in the pinbits link is the controller for auto adjustable sensor boards; these boards have a controller AND the sensor chip (TDA0161). You cannot replace the TDA0161 with another part as this part is discontinued without replacement. www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/389/stmicroelectronics_cd00000119-1204052.pdf

The best you can do is roll the dice and buy counterfeit chips from China if you really need one.

Quoted from Phantasize:

The chip will work with all eddy boards

If this is not a proximity sensor chip as linked above, than this statement is simply not true.

EDIT: I'm going to toss Pinbits some credit here and say that it will likely work in any eddy sensor board that uses a WPC 04-11001 microcontroller; unfortunately, the A-18543-X boards do not use this part.

Hi There

Thank you so much for your input. I may have misunderstood the entire meaning of this, but i was under the impression that replacing the TDA0161 chip on my regular eddy board, would make that eddy board auto adjustable.

The reason for purchasing the replacement from Pinbits, was that my original boards sensor keeps "drifting", requiring me to regularly adjust the pot on the board. And it always seems to happen when you are having one of the best games ever It then either locks on, or doesn't detect anything at all.

So instead of replacing the pot, gluing it in place (as some people recommend) or doing other similar hacks, i wanted to try this replacement, believing that all i had to do was replace it on the original board. But perhaps i totally misunderstood that...

Pinbits sells complete auto boards for SS, but also the IC / controller chip separate. And i just assumed that i could use the separate chip as a replacement on my original boards, thereby getting it to auto adjust. I was actually considering buying more for my Road show and Theatre Of Magic as well.
