I found this thread on converting the PinBot topper to LEDs;

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/adding-led-flashers-to-system-11-games/page/2

Here is a part of that thread. . .

“4. On games with 24 Volt #1251 flashlamps (Pinbot, Cyclone...) These are usually wired 3 sockets parallel to each other. Change the sockets so that the bulbs are wired in series instead (daisy chain them) Technically they will be just at 8-12V each on the flashers but they are still very bright, Then you can use three 12V flashers. Note that when doing this make sure that the 24V enters the first socket at the nipple and exits though the body and then enters the next socket through the nipple and exits the body and same for the third. This is important in case the LED's you are using are polarized as polarized lamps won't light when powered backwards (incandescents don't care which way the current flows) . Note that with the series connection one bulb out of the circuit or broken will cause the other 2 bulbs not to light. I don't think this method will switch back to 12V incandescent very well as the voltage per bulb might be too low, but I haven't tried.”

I purchased 8 28v LEDs for my topper. If I put four on one side everything works as designed. The various light patterns work. As you know sometimes only the inner flashers work, and other times they go in sequence.

When I put the remaining four in on the other side the inner lights will fully illuminate and stay lit. Not like the dim lighting that occurs with the warming current. If I replace every other bulb with LED the topper works normal. Meaning if #1, 3, 5, and 7 remain incandescent and #2, 4, 6, 8 were replaced with LED everything works normal.

I was hoping by buying 28v LEDs to replace the existing 1251 incandescent I could get the topper to work normally.

Does anyone know if there are any threads that address this situation?

All the bulbs in the topper are 12 volt #89 bulbs.

Ok, that’s embarrassing. Somewhere I thought I read they were 1251s (28v)

I assume if I were to replace them with 12 v flashers i would still have the same illumination problem.

Anyone know where to find the write up on what needs to be done ?

Thanks

Quoted from RNajarian:

There is a double resistor board in the backbox just below the topper. Remove the black wire from the board and insulate it. Add new leds, enjoy.

There are 8 #1251 28 volt bulbs in the game, 2 in the insert board and 6 in the visor area of the play field.

Thanks Again Grumpy . . . I’ll pick up some #89 LEDs and give it a whirl

It looks like you already showed me how to do this . . . Again how embarrassing

I switched it up to LEDs myself since the old bulbs melted my topper. I made some extra replacement toppers if anyone is still in need. You can check out the listing here https://pinside.com/pinball/market/classifieds/ad/98819
