I just added some LED strips to the backglass of my NGG. For others that like colored LEDs, but don't like how a backglass or translite turns into a color-blotch mess, this came out nice. Basically, I added some cool white LED strips to the inside of the translite case, then added colored LEDs to the sockets.

The LED strips are 12V and piggyback on the power of J138.

Step one: Take out the blackglass and remove from case
Step two: Cut LED strips to fit
Step three: Place/stick LED strips in backglass case
Step four: Solder wires to LED strips
Step five: Solder leads to LED strips and run out of bottom right bottom of case
Step six: Add 2x 4-pin IDCs to end of wire leds
(Optional, add a two-pin connector to make removal of the backglass case easy.)
Step seven: Piggyback IDCs onto J138 of power driver board and route wires with existing wiring harnesses
Step eight: Colorize with 555 LEDs
Step nine: Test to make sure lights work
Step ten: Reassemble backglass and case
Step eleven: Replace backglass and enjoy

Camera's always blow out the led colors. I bet this looks great in person though.

Better images showing the difference of with and without the LED strips

So that is pretty neat. How come you don't just put in mostly all cool whites with a few accent colored leds? Cool white leds are bright and would have the same effect with less work? This kinda stuff is really killer on a stern where it's just one big bulb.

You get lensing/blotching with 555 LEDs. Also, the lower area of the translight doesn't have any sockets and is quite dark. Overall, the LED strips provide a nice base of light that then let's the color LEDs complement the art work without saturation in one color. In any case, you can see that I'm pretty conservative with the LED colors, and it still looks blotchy without the LED strips. Also, installing the strips takes less time than popping out all the old 555s and installing/color matching LEDs, so it isn't a lot of work.
