Hey Guys,

I have a problem with my Addam's Family pinball. I never worked on any pinball machine and it looks like I'am not able to fix it without help.
Today I turned it on for the first time in a couple of years after changing the completely decharged AA batteries from the board. It looks like they haven't leaked.

After booting it up I get 2 error messages:

"Sound EPROM L-1
S.2.31. 5/27/92"

and

"Addams Family
20017 EPROM L-4"

I do not have sound and the game won't start. The start button in general seems not operational, it just flashes.
Consulting the user manual did not help at all. I can't figure out what's causing the problems nor can I identify the parts assosiated with them.

What is my machine trying to tell me?

Any help troubleshooting would be highly appreciated.

Kind regards
Olli

Reseat the sound chips and ribbon cables. Also, you will have to put the machine back in Free Play mode since you lost all your settings when the batteries drained.

What shows on the display?

It always shows those messages at power on.

Can you use the buttons inside the coin door to go into the menu?

So far I checked all cables and chips for a proper fit - all looked and felt well. It's back in Free Play Mode but all the start button does is flashing.

The display keeps repeating those error messages, I can enter the "regular" game display via the menu buttons wich work well with the exception of the start button.

It sounds like your new batteries may not be making good contact or something. It should automatically go to the "regular" game display (attract mode) after flashing those messages once.

Can you go into the switch test and see if the start button registers, or if not, if any other switches also don't work?

Correction: it's starts with: Testing... 20017 eprom L-4 and goes straight to the attract mode (thanks!)
It starts repeating the messages after I hit the test mode button once. Sorry for the confusion!

All but the start botton register in test mode.
In the single switch test the start button registers as open. (T.3 13 open wht -orn grn-brn)

Ah, okay, all sounds fine there then.

I'd go examine the actual switch then, maybe a wire has fallen off or something

I'm gonna detach, check and click back on every cable I can find. First thing in the morning...ok, maby after my coffee.
Since it's almost 2am over here, I'am gonna take a break.

Thanks a lot for the support so far! I'll keep ya posted.

Partial success.
Looks like one of the batteries lost a couple of drops after all. 2 of the pins on J212 & J205 were corroded. A 'lill cleaning and the start button started working again. However, the soundissue remains unsolved. I checked all ribbon cables and the speaker connection aswell as the eprom. Cables & connections are good, no cold soldering joints. I do not get a "pop" sound from the speakers when turning the machine on/off. Did I somehow cook the eprom?

Does the sound test do anything?

Total silence, but it runs the test.

Darn, we're at the limits of my experience here then. Never had zero sounds on a WPC. Hopefully someone else can chime in

Found it!

In the middle of a bunch of cables in the backbox, right under an zip-tie was a plug-connection for a speaker that came loose.
Is that thing supposed to be there or was the previous owner funny like that?

Anyhow, thanks for your time and effort zacaj - much appreciated!

Cheers Olli
