Hi all,
I have a TAF Thing that's giving me problems. I've put the thing in test mode and the up and down boxes are checking on and off as the thing hand moves up and down. I took the magnet inside the hand apart and the wires are not broken. I am getting alerts when starting the game- "check switch 85 thing up opto". If I'm having a problem with the up opto, then why would appear to be working in the test mode?

When the ball sits in the saucer in front of the hand, the hand comes out with no problems and seems to travel all the way to the ball, making contact with the ball but does not pick it up.

I've tried adjusting the interrupter that goes between the optos on the opto board and it seems to be traveling through just fine. Do I have a bad opto board?

Any help would be appreciated!

Cool.

Did you check continuity of each wire to the connector below the playfield ? Easy to have a broken wire inside a wire casing or harness you can't see.

Ok, please forgive my ignorance, how do I check the continuity of the wire? What setting Should I use on the multimeter?
Thanks!

Youtube is littered with short how to videos. Like this -

Type in "how to check continuity with a meter" or things like that and search.

The magnet is giving me a good signal when I test it with the meter, what else should I check?

The simple stuff:

Your wires do not connect to the driver board (continuity check)

Your wires have continuity, do not have power (check the fuse that powers the magnet)

Did you check each wire from the connector below the playfield, to the magnet ?

Then from connector to power driver board in the head.
