Quoted from Shredder565:

hmm, that gives me some hope at least.
But, as stated, that'd be the last thing to get after I source all the parts I can new or used. I want to buy everything I can first, before I even think about assembling .

Its when you start assembling you will see how much your missing hehe, when I did a full restore of my ES I had a bucket full of custom metal parts and ball guides. It was insane how many little custom parts these machines have. If you had a doner the pf will be bare after the new game is built

But who cares long as you enjoy it

To populate the Playfield, a rotesserie is pretty essential. You can’t build it up in the cab. That’s really why you should do the Playfield first, then get a cab to drop it in.

Quoted from Shredder565:

Is it possible to get a decent donor machine for $5,000 or under?

YES: I sold a decent working TAF about 3 years ago when I was moving for $3200.

I still think your better off not building a TAF unless you can get an almost complete wired playfield from someone. TAF is just too complex of a playfield to custom make parts for. There was a lot of TAF made (over 20K) so it is not a hard to find game. Even operators in the late 1990's parted them out. Wired playfields are out there and it would be your best option to find one.

THat is a pretty decent price that i'd be willing to pay for a donor, actually. I'll have to be on the lookout.

If you are going to the trouble of building one from scratch... do NOT use decals for the cab. This was painted on the originals and decals.... suck. Plus it will reduce the value.

However, I think you are nuts

I've been called worse .

How would one go about getting as close to the original look if decals are out?
My painting skills are lackluster, even with rotoscoping

Just a note that HEP doesn’t use a rotisserie and literally does this for a living.

In the middle of a TAF playfield swap. I wouldn't wish building this wiring harness on my worst enemy.[quoted image]

If you guys are curious, TAF has 23,919 inches or 1,993.25 feet of wire in its harnesses. (from Parts List - BOM) It is recommended for a first scratch built pin to use the same color code that the manufacturer used in order to facilitate troubleshooting, if necessary. This is the amount of wire (in inches) required for each color and gauge.

If you got that ball shooter from Marco good luck using it. I ordered one from there for my game and the angle that the shooter rod goes through on that one is slanted more downward than the original which made it unusable for my WPC refurbishment. Had to polish up the old one and reuse that.

This is why I mentioned maybe buying and parting out used harnesses from ebay. Bay area amusements has a lot of colored wire for 27.5 cents a foot. That's about $550 if you didn't waste any (which you would since it's sold in 10 foot increments)

Anything is possible in the pinball world but you have to weigh this out the pros and cons.Sure you can build one but considering the money, parts, ect. is no easy task.My advice would be to look for one for sale or just give it a bit of time for one to pop up for sale around you.

Quoted from Shredder565:

THat is a pretty decent price that i'd be willing to pay for a donor, actually. I'll have to be on the lookout.

Not to be a Debby Downer, but those are few and very far between. Just know that almost everyone on this forum is hunting for that same deal and will almost certainly (99% chance) beat you to it.

This was my idea when I had unlimited time and money. Then I got remarried. Make this your own build. You love Addams Family buy a donor game flip the playfield and theme it after the TV show and not the movie. This would take twice the time and probably not for a first timer but you would have something unique at the end of the day.

#119 4 years ago

I know about 20 people have already tried to warn you, but this is a REALLY bad idea to take on as a first pinball project. You are going to pay 3X what a decent game would cost to build one from stretch.

Building a TAF wire harness from scratch? I don’t know of many pinball guys with 20 years of experience that would be willing to take this on.

I appreciate your ambition, but this one is going to be very ugly.

One factory video I did manage to find. the reporter was a bit...clueless?

also this

#122 4 years ago

Ordered some bumper part sets, since they where cheap enough. holding off till January 1st to order playfield and dmd.

current cost spent - around $1811.

Playfield will be around $1,000, DMD around $300. I found a complete NOS bookcase assembly for $500 that I might just have to get.

#123 4 years ago

Time for a poll: what will happen first? Shredder finishes or Chicago Gaming builds remakes.

#124 4 years ago

The wire alone will be well over $1,000, not including any connectors.

Funny you mention this.... It is actually a legit rumor.

knowing how my luck works?

I bought an Alan -1 Star Wars Reproduction yoke HQ remake. I hadn't yet built a container for it for gameplay, when Arcade 1Up announced their cabinet a few months later.

oh well. The satisfaction of completing a difficult task will make the hurt go away fast .

#127 4 years ago

I’d start on the harness before buying anything else. It’s the most labor intensive. It’s the section with the highest likelihood of making a mistake. Once it’s done, the rest will seem easy.

And as some have mentioned, some of the metal ball guides aren’t available for sale. You’ll want a reference for when you have to custom fab them.

#128 4 years ago

I saved the wiring list posted above for later buying reference. I'm not quite sure what part/section I'll start with first.
But I agree, after the wiring, everything else will at least LOOK easy.

The deals are out there. There is a TZ that I can pickup for $3K locally by me but I really don't have any interest in it. I also found two Gottlieb SYS3 mid 1990's DMD games at a church that I can pick up for $400.

I was just saying they’re rare. If the owner of the TZ posted the ad here, it would be gone in 10 minutes or less.

Hey 565
Purchase parts carefully if you want to hold the cost down. Many times it is less expensive to buy all the individual component parts separately (if available) and assemble yourself rather than to buy a completed assembly.
I generally look for parts a year in advance of starting a scratch build so I run into some really sweet deals. For example, the cab/head decals for SS were $100, the power transformer was $80, and a complete wiring harness (from a different WPC-95 pin) was $50. Great deals are always found at the pinball shows. (I saw a TAF topper brand new for $100 at TPF and Expo) I restore many used parts like the coin door, pop mechs, sling mechs, flipper mechs and targets. If you want all new parts and you want them tomorrow, costs will be substantially higher.

I can see what you mean by it'll go fast if one pops up .

I was looking at a few build guides again today.

The Chair Bracket install and chair install seems rather straightforward. As do the left and right bumpers. a few posts, and lights and light covers, plus plastic covers....Once I know I have all the right parts, and see photos on how it's done, i'm almost certain I can get a complete playfield at least setup. that part doesn't scare me (yet)...but the wiring...ugh....that absolutely scares me. and If I can get as far as a complete playfield, I may take months of break before I even think about the wiring, heh.

I was going too do the same as you ,u might be looking for ether a real grap of a TAF or just the PF of one that's wired and then you go something too start with and u got most of the PF parts that would cost a lot more then it's worth doing

Seems like the consensus is that this is a crazy endeavor, but man, does this dude got some chops. Bet he walks into a Toyota dealership, checks out the Land Cruisers or whatever, and says, "nah, thanks, imma make my own." Has to ride his bike home, but doesn't get a F!

this will either be the biggest failure of all time, or the greatest success story of the year. I'm rather hoping of the latter ..

good luck on the build

this is a handy search engine though looks like it is shutting down on the last day of this month. It is a good way to hunt down game specific parts from all the pinball supplies - search hard and fast before it goes.

Not sure if you found the guy overseas who sell parts yet but his name is arakissun on here. I’ve bought a few things from him. Definitely worth a look.
Good luck, this will be one hell of a project...I’m afraid to even do a playfield swap!

Good luck! If it were me, I'd keep watching for a project to pop up and/or the next container buy somebody organizes. The TAF's are usually fairly rough, but could be had for ~$4500-5000. Not any real cost savings, but you could at least get one as a donor machine.

It sounds to good to be true,TZ for 3k anyone in the hobby would pick it up in heartbeat having room or no room. You could buy it for 3k and sell it in the same hour for a very quick huge profit.

yes for sure ,I am looking for a project TAF too start with this would save ALOT of time and money too boot ,it wouldn't make it worth while the cost would be 20k when your done if you had too buy every part ,that's why they can't make MM,MB or AFM the same as Williams and Bally did back in the 90s cost too much now too do the same ,

Quoted from RandyW:If you are going to the trouble of building one from scratch... do NOT use decals for the cab. This was painted on the originals and decals.... suck. Plus it will reduce the value.

Besides decals, what other choice would he have?

Quoted from Electronmagic:

Besides decals, what other choice would he have?

Value won't be affected one iota by using decals. His other choice would be Rad Cals which I think are way cooler than using decals and equivalently priced.
