Quoted from fiberdude120:

That plate from the factory would be riveted on so be sure to use the smallest screw you can find or rivet it.

Rivets would seem best..

Unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket to spend on riveting tools and supplies you will be wise to take Bryan up on his very generous offer. Bryan restored several of my pinball machines and he does a great job and he is very picky with regards to quality which is what collectors greatly appreciate.

Here are some tools that you will need to look at if you want to do the riveting yourself.

Best

Next Best
https://www.hansonrivet.com/tools-machines/tubular-rivet-tools-machines/hand-rivet-squeezers/

3rd Best
https://www.hansonrivet.com/tools-machines/solid-rivet-tools-machines/hand-rivet-clinchers/

All three types of riveting tools will do the job, but you have to decide how much you want to spend and if this is something that you will be doing again in the future.

I get more out of this riveter than any other:

https://www.erivet.com/product_detail.cfm?itemNbr=HT-174

I use this one a lot too, it uses the Hanson dies just like the pinrestore one (which i also have):

http://www.arbortime.mountainminded.net/html/the_better_tonka_rivet_tool_-_.html

#1206 3 years ago

I also have the first one... I put in my drill press and press the rivets rather than hammer them

Quoted from hoby1:

I do this too.

But i find more and more uses for the pintonka one, its pretty slick.

#1208 3 years ago

if memory serves, we already used something like this on the proton pack and have a drill press in the back.

https://www.mcmaster.com/rivets/rivets/aluminum-domed-head-blind-rivets/

But, if I rivet them out of the hole, I'd have to drill the hole a little bigger so they fit in and then put a nut on the end of the spade bolt.. ( I didn't check to see if they went all the way through the board to fit a nut)

Pinball machines use tubular rivets.

Head goes on the sheet metal side.

The spade lug should penetrate the playfield so you can put a nylock nut on it with a washer.

Pro tip:

Put a washer on top of the spade lug too, on rhe topside of the playfield under the flatrail.

This will keep the flat rail from cutting the artwork over time.

#1210 3 years ago

The key is ........ Proper size rivet, washer and hole for the application.

#1211 3 years ago

OK, so I went in on a rare saturday visit. the spade bolts do leave enough space to have a nut on the bottom, so I can rivet the plate.
just a question as to how so far.

also, these guys came in. I know the area they go in, just not the exact location. and I wonder if I can use this for my other post as well in the same area. the one that has the flip switch for the ramp that sends it from a bear kick, to a 'lets go thing' flip...

Will be pleasantly surprised if my cabinet ships this week . looks like it's finally getting close to D day .

Also, the Big Mystery order might come in next Friday. Two more parts down and accounted for .

Now we are getting into the tough area. all the LITTLE stuff that one has to think of. Screws, nuts, bolts, switches, flashing lights...

----

Now, to figure out what i'm missing, so I can attach the middle one to the hole on the right where it belongs, and find the proper placement of the other two. all the pictures I Have are of tear downs..can't seem to find it yet.

My attempt at decaling.

After taking apart the Arcade 1up for modding, it was pretty clear I needed to scrap off the original art and apply new pieces. ordered some online, and this is the result. the trimming didn't go too great either, even with an exacto knife and trying to be REAL careful. I also didn't want to take it apart again to properly apply the screen decal, so it got a little squished. still, not bad I guess for a first try.

glad I'm having pro's doing my TAF decals

I bought the rivet die set from pinrestore and attached them to a metal c clamp that I could twist by hand to install rivets into plastic assemblies.

This clamp to be precise, but it was silver when I bought it. I got rid of the middle clamp, cut the ends off the other two, and attached the rivet dies to those.

I'd be worried about something slipping and causing a malfunction in the process heh.
but it's definetly an option.

If I'm going to use it more than a few times on this, I don't mind getting the slightly more expensive item.

My Cabinet ships in 48 hours . Thank you Paul for getting it together under difficult circumstances . can't wait to see this sucker next week .

You're definitely in the next batch. This whole COVID thing has made life challenging, to say the least. No lumber, missing shipments of parts and supplies, and, of course, MANDATING we just completely shutdown here in Michigan for THREE months! Ugh.

I'm working 6-1/2 days a week to get it done!

I have to admit I was concerned about the wiring harness. That would have been quite a task for someone experienced. Are there any more unobtanium parts you are missing?

#1245 3 years ago
Quoted from Shredso:

I have to admit I was concerned about the wiring harness. That would have been quite a task for someone experienced. Are there any more unobtanium parts you are missing?

One of the things I'm starting to feel now is overwhelmed at where to go next.

Once I figure out the ball guides, I think all of the big, easy to spot parts are mostly in there. Now, it's time to focus on all the little parts you don't know about, or don't think about, or just have a hard time keeping track of.

I'll order the rivet stuff next week. but after that, with two big items out of the way, I think it's time to give part buying a break for August.

I'll see what I can assemble with the plastic pieces I have. I'll try and figure out the rest of the posts I still have to deal with . Maybe I can get the bumpers by the flippers set up, at least, if I can figure out what I'm missing to complete that.

And then we'll take stock of what we're still missing and what we need.
I still need a wire ramp, for instance.

Cabinet arrives Monday ;o)

Getting the playfield to fit properly in the cabinet is next.

You might have to remove stuf to make it easier to handle.

Fitting the playfield can be a bit finicky.

I do it before its populated.

#1247 3 years ago

*The hinges and latch for light board...Not only hard to find, but when you do it takes a degree in physics to understand what you are looking at...Basically it pushes up into the top pin, and bottom hinge is bolted into place.

Many folks have lost loved ones to Covid, so I feel fortunate just having the challenge of working through it.

We do any speaker panel you'd like. I currently have TAF, DR?, T2, and Funhouse, along with the 'standard' DMD panels.

If I don't have it, I invite folks to ship me a sample, and you'll get a free one for helping us out.

what do I need to make sure it's stable in there? I was toying around with doing this next, just to make it look a little more complete, but figured it was too soon.

The only way is to attach the rear mounts and front hangers and see how it sets.

Make adjustments to the hangers as needed.

I also add black plastic washers to the pivots for both the head and the playfield to keep them centered so they dont scrape.

Getting these is mandatory so you font scrape up the cabinet during installation:
