I have done this a couple times.
Yes it blew fuses, but didnt kill the game too badly.
In my case the fuses saved me and I didnt have to do any board work.
Reinstall the cable and be EXTREMELY aware of the red strip and the number ONE on the PC boards.
Red goes to number 1.
Also feel with your fingers and use a flashlight to be absolutely SURE that the cables are on BOTH rows and NOT off by a pin.
Hopefully the game will survive this.

Do this first as LTG suggested:
Pull ALL the fuses (just pull up one side to test) on ALL the affected boards one by one and test them for continuity with a meter.
There are a lot, but just do it.
Visual inspection is meaningless.
