In total agreement, it is a bugger to replace that one. An LED is definitely the way to go, so hopefully you won't have to do it again.
A tip I will give is make sure you put everything back together exactly as it was. I accidentally rotated the holder 180° when I did it, which was a mistake as the metal of the leg that screws into the plastic ramp which is normally at the top was now at the bottom. This touched some contacts next to the cannon which caused it to swing out, move back and... not stop. Cue terrible grinding of plastic as the cannon tried to essentially plough through the ramp. I could not turn the machine off quick enough!
So I had to undo about an hour's work and do it properly this time. Thankfully no damage was done.
