I think that is one of the stupidest things ever! Stern is silly for doing this most collectors like to add their own touch and changing colors with LEDs is one way to do that. Can't you change them out from top of the playfield? And what happens if one goes bad, why is Stern making life on the collector more difficult with lighting?
I'm sure there are additional threads on this but the theory is that these are 3 or 4 color changing diodes. So the lighting code was written so that based one where you are in the game and what feature your playing the entire lighting changes from white to blue to red. If you look at the vids out there of people playing the Prem and LE it really looks great.
The other advance is that the machine was built for LED. I.E. no old tech. The boards were built for LED so there is no Flicker and again the LED intensity can be controlled unlike the old way that was either on or off.
You do bring up an interesting point of how do you change them when they fail but I haven't seen mine yet to know how they are built into the machine.
