Awesome. If anyone here is using this app and has not tossed this man a few bucks for his effort you really should. Building and maintaining software like this is no simple task and he keeps the updates flowing.
Thanks Oga.

It would be great to make a PB bookmark file (see OP for details).
I'll try to figure out how the bookmarks defined in PB could be automatically shared.

Even being able to enter a request number to jump to would be useful IMO, currently you have to scroll through all of the stuff you don't want to see to get to the number your looking for.

Why don't pinsiders just exchange bin files of their creation's. I'm lazy and would rather just buy different versions other guy's have spent the time making up with the browser. For me just using the entire MOP album would be perfect, Damage Inc instead of Fuel, Leper messiah instead of Sandman etc. If anyone is willing let me know

I use this feature all the time to label images (like the stern logo) or songs, it's great. But when a new firmware change comes out and someone reports that a song is at request 476 I have to scroll to that request to find it instead of just entering 476 and have the list jump to that request. Also I see the sort does not have the request number (the way that people report them here) so they would have to rely on the length of the request (or play it) to find out which one is which the first time through.

I misunderstood what you meant.
Moreover, the combo box is not working very well (no auto completion, typing text has no effect).
So, in the next version, it will be possible to use the Sounds and Images combo boxes as follow :
Sounds :
- enter 0x476 to jump to Script 0x476
- enter 476 to jump to Request 476
- enter a bookmark name to jump to it
Images :

I don't know how feasible this would be, but would it be possible to setup something like a Google Doc's share, and then let us upload/download bookmark files, and other non-copyright infringing files (macro files?)? I don't know if Google Docs has an API, but if not, maybe there's another free file sharing service that does?
edit: Looks like they do: https://developers.google.com/google-apps/documents-list/?csw=1#creating_and_uploading_documents_and_files

Thanks.
Yes, Google Docs has an API.
Pinball Browser is already using Google Docs to get informations on the latest available version (when a new version is found, a message pops up at startup).
Quoted from digitalbytes:Also I see the sort does not have the request number (the way that people report them here) so they would have to rely on the length of the request (or play it) to find out which one is which the first time through.
It's because it is not easy (or fast) to find all the requests that contain a specific script...
The next version will show the scripts and requests for the new sort orders.
OP - Just use PB for the first time to transfer my high scores and adjustments from Stern ST LE 1.3 to 1.42.
The download settings didn't appear to want to work for me. Probably the crapstatic USB to Serial adapter I had. Or Windows 8. Not sure.
PB kept saying pinball not connected to the tablet.
I wrote down my two piddly scores and transferred them manually.
Transferring scores shouldn't be done between software versions. The rules of the game change and so do scoring possibilities. So a high score on one version may or may not be significant on another.
Here is a step by step tutorial that explains how to install the Pinball Browser communication patch on your pinball :
1- First of all, you need a RS232 cable to connect your pinball to your PC (here is an example : amazon.com link »)
2- You need to know which communication port has been assigned by Windows to your cable : run the "Windows Device Manager". You'll see your port name under "COM & LPT Ports". In the below example, it is COM2.
3- Run Pinball Browser and enter the port name in the "Communication with pinball" section (Advanced tab)
4- Click on Test. You should get a message like :
"Cannot communicate with pinball. Is the communication patch installed ?".
If you have "No COMx port specified !" or "Cannot open specified port", there is a problem with your configuration. Most likely, you didn't specify the correct port.
5- You need to patch your pinball firmware with the comm106.hex (or one of the older version). Load your stock firmware in Pinball Browser, click on "Load Patch" (advanced tab) and select the comm106.hex file. Save your patched firmware and upgrade your pinball with it.
6- Once your pinball has the communication patch, click on "Test" again. This time, the answer message should be : "It works !".
7- You are now ready to modify/backup/restore your high scores and adjustments
Summary of the possible answers when you click on Test :
- "No COMx port specified !"
- "Cannot open specified port" : most likely, the specified port is wrong
- "Cannot communicate with pinball. Is the communication patch installed ?" : same as the following message.
- "The port can be opened but I can't communicate with the pinball. Is the pinball switched on ? Is the communication patch installed ?" : Install the communication patch as explained above.
- "Communication patch has wrong version..." : at least, comm103.hex should be installed. If needed, install the latest version of the communication patch as explained above.
- "Warning: It works but the pinball firmware does not match the one loaded in Pinball Browser !" : The communication is working but the firmware you have loaded in Pinball Browser does not match the one in your pinball (for example : v1.51 in Pinball Browser, v1.50 in pinball, or LE in pinball Browser, Pro in pinball).
- "It works !" : The communication patch works well.
Quoted from markmon:Transferring scores shouldn't be done between software versions. The rules of the game change and so do scoring possibilities. So a high score on one version may or may not be significant on another.
This is correct but it depends on the version. Most of the time, new revisions have the same high score structure.
Anyway, whatever the revision, the communication feature allows you to edit your high scores (much more easy and flexible than editing the static flash default values). You can also backup your high scores to prevent you from loosing them in case you flash again with the same version (for a song replacement) and a factory reset occurs.

Ok. I think this is a simple answer.
Do you need the "patched" firmware on the pinball machine before you can retrieve scores?
I'm fairly sure the answer is yes; but it wasn't obvious in the instructions.
IF so; that's the problem on my end. I was running stock 1.3 FW when I tried to retrieve the scores.

The next version will use an online database.
There will be a "sync bookmarks" feature so that we can share the song and image bookmarks :
When you click on "Sync", you will be able to download the bookmarks defined by others (and the ones you have defined will be uploaded for others) :

Great feature.
What preference is given if the user has something different in the same location than what's in the database? Does the database take preference or the user?

Yes indeed, donation sent!
Awesome work.
Quoted from RobertWinter:Great feature.

The synchronization feature works as follow :
- All the bookmarks are saved on your machine in a .DAT file (as explained in the OP) and into an online database
- Each local bookmark has a "Synchronized" flag. When a bookmark is loaded from the online database, this flag is set (meaning it's in sync with the online database). Each time you add or modify a bookmark, this flag is cleared (meaning it needs to be uploaded).
- When you click on "Sync", all the bookmarks that are not synchronized (flag cleared) are uploaded to the online database, then all the bookmarks are downloaded from the online database, and all the flags are set.
In brief, it means that you have precedence over the online database (all the bookmarks you add or modify [and only them] will be saved into the online database). The last user who makes a modification has precedence over the previous ones.

Dude, you are awesome! Can we get this for macros as well? If so, it'd be good if the macro and bookmarks could somehow be paired together on upload. How about art? Since it's dots, there shouldn't be any concerns of copyright infringement I'd think.
Quoted from flashburn:Can we get this for macros as well? If so, it'd be good if the macro and bookmarks could somehow be paired together on upload.
It's more difficult for macros because they are not structured like bookmarks (in particular, no unique Id)
However, they can easily be shared on the forum with a copy/paste

Regarding bookmarks or url for sounds, I think the main limitation for customizing sounds is the fact that the sound length cannot be changed. If the sound length can be arbitrarily changed, then there would be a very large number of ideas and a large need to share.
As it currently stands, the sound length cannot be changed with the result that replacement sounds either get cut off or result in long silences. This problem limits the appeal of replacing the sound or greatly increases the work (as in the Star Trek music replacement effort).
Desperate to try this on my metallica, but using mac is making it hell..
anyone care to advise how to actually get " crossover " or windows related software( read that this should work) to recognize the pinball browser files?
I want to donate some money too, but how? where is this button? its all magic right now...
thanks anyone.

Unfortunately, this is not possible for several reasons (that have already been explained here)
oga, is there anyway to extract a bunch of images at once to a folder instead of one at a time? Same goes for the audio, it would be cool to extract a bunch of samples at a time and pick and choose the exported files instead of one at a time.

Done, for both sounds and images
Has anyone had a chance to do much sound importing with the new Pinball Browser features?
I was wondering if volume on an MP3 clip could be boosted to the normal level of game sounds without popping? I know this was an issue for me when using Audacity until someone suggested using the compression tools in it.

I have made an improvement : the out-of-sync bookmarks will be displayed and it will be possible to disable the sync for any of them.
v3.50 can be downloaded (link in OP)
Tell me what you think about the new features !
Change log :
v3.50: New GUI with bitmaps, icons and tooltips (that explains the version number jump)
Export multiple sounds or images at once*
Sounds and Images bookmarks online synchonization
New bookmark combo box features :
- Enter 0x123 into images combo box to jump to image 0x123
- Enter 0x123 into sounds combo box to jump to sound script 0x123
- Enter 123 into sounds combo box to jump to sound request 123
- Enter a Name and click on SetName to define a bookmark
Sound Requests and Scripts are displayed in the list for all sort orders
Macros are automatically saved and loaded in [FirmwareName].pbm
Communication patch is automatically loaded (can be disabled)
[EDIT] Number of bookmarks in the online database :
bookmarks.png
I hope these numbers will quickly increase !

I am also interested to know.
The volume feature in the current version does not use compression and I guess it can bring some saturation.
A compressor could be added but I need to know if it's worth it.
Oliver,
Thank you for the great tool! I replaced Sad But True and Unforgiven with Harvester of Sorrow and Welcome Home yesterday. I know I'm only scratching the surface but I love it so far!
Quoted from oga83:Done, for both sounds and images
Guess I know where I rate now. I asked for this (for images) a long time ago
Thanks for the continued improvements oga

Yes, you just have to send me the "token id" that is displayed in the License dialog box.
Love the bookmark feature, this just keeps getting better and better.
For any of you met guys, I found the drop targets sound file way to low. Now thanks to Olivier's awesome program and features I just increased them to 300% and also added a bookmark next to their request so if you wish to do the same increasing the volume just download the bookmark and you'll see the tag "Drop target sound".
Great program, thanks again.
Hey guys,
on my transformers I replaced the game score with parts from the original sound track. I don´t get warm with the techno sound tune.
Stupid question:
I agree that it is not allowed to share the binary file, but whats about to share the sound pieces?
Everyone can easy put it into his own .bin file. they are named like the script sound is.

I would guess the whole reason to not share the bin file IS BECAUSE of the added sound files. What I mean to say is, I'm guessing just sharing the sound file alone is just as bad or worse than sharing the modified bin file.
