I just posted on my blog videos and gameplay of the new ColorDMD. I recorded the HIGHRES AND DOTXL gameplay. The colors look great.

Nice job, thanks for the videos. I only watched the DotsXL one, because that's what I'm excited about, they look great, totally what I was hoping for. Perfect blend of old school dots and color and shading.

Thanks appreciate the kind words Aurich, I totally agree with you with the DotsXL, that's what I left as the default on my machine for now. The detail is really good.

Thanks for posting. I love the look up the high res, but think I'm an even bigger fan of the XLDots. Just seems to have the right look for my taste. Can't wait to get home so I can install it.

Looks far to good to save the money, dammit Jim!

Hmmm, does it work with a colordmd from 2013 or does it need a new board?

Looks awesome! Thanks for posting the videos.

Yes, just have to download and install the new software for ACDC

The ColorDMD display hardware is the same but you'll need a different wire harness to connect to Stern games.

We also updated the bracket with wider mounting tabs and holes to align to Stern panels, but you can use the old one with washers to clamp down on the edges of the bracket.

Shlockdoc, thanks for the kinds words, how have you been? Did you ever get the CFTBL Snack Bar mod from Swinks? If you did how did it turn out?

Super videos and well made. One of the best pinball video youtubers, along with Matt Adams and Chris Bucci.

Thanks Indypin, appreciate that. Awesome to know that people at least watch the videos and posts on my sites. I will even give you an upvote on that. Thanks again.

Thanks for the vids. Good stuff!

Got to see this live on the AC/DC LE that was at Louisville last weekend. While waiting in line at neighboring games I couldn't stop watching, I was amazed... it's not just "color", it's subtle detail and contrast that went into the conversion. I love the guitar air drop, the difference in car "passenger" apparel (before and after, lol), and as a model railroader I appreciated the attention to detail on the train as well. Really adds a new level of excitement and the vids almost can't do it justice...

(...Dammit, as if getting a DMD game itself wouldn't have been enough...!)

Awesome videos, I'm with Aurich, I think the colored dots look better with the old feel of dots and great animated color. Just bought a color dmd for JD so this one will have to wait until I can afford another one.

Its hard to believe that people can watch both videos and prefer the dots? Shrug. Guess its good there is a choice of modes.

I am finally about to make my first NIB purchase with an ACDC Pro. My question: is this an upgrade exclusive to the Premium/LE, or can Pro owners get in on this too?

Works on all ACDC models. Thanks very much to Dave (Taxman) for his beta testing with the Pro model!

More videos please! How about Thunderstruck and Hells Bells...

Smoothing has grown on me, but I still love dots. The intent of the pixel art is preserved, and all the great details that were carefully added suddenly come to life in color.

At Louisville there was a wall of pins with Color DMDs: AC/DC, MM, AFM, and CSI... I may be forgetting one. AC/DC was dots while the other 3 were smoothed.

Personally, I prefer the dots. It might be because I grew up in the 8-bit era and made do with zooming in MSPaint as my first foray into computer-graphic design... but something about dots just seems right. At the least, dot mode preserves part of the charm of the original tech.

The grid doesn't bother me and sometimes I think my brain subconsciously fills that negative space between the dots with its own smoothing algorithm (again, I grew up with them) so they seem more natural "in my own mind". Comparatively, the "smoothed" versions have exaggerated angles and odd shapes - literally, connecting-the-dots. The most telling comparison is with anything circular: on dots, the presented elements look more like a "circle"... whereas on the smoothed versions it looked like a circle... as drawn with an etch-a-sketch.

I'm probably not describing it well, but it's actually interesting to compare them. I imagine it's purely a subjective preference, and I could see changing my own mind depending on mood. Pretty cool the product is configurable for either at whim!

Smoothing changes the intent of the art too much for my taste. With pixel style art, your brain fills in the gaps...when it's done for you, it turns it into something somewhat odd and artificial. For example, if you're playing Simpsons with ColorDMD, smoothing makes Apu's eyes diamond shaped...we know Simpson eyes are round, so it looks weird. In dots, your mind makes the connection to what it's really supposed to be and you process the eyes as round. Same with diagonal lines like the TV in the Scared Stiff Match sequence...smoothed, you see these jagged edged lines - it looks odd. When in dots, it doesn't seem as jagged - and therefore it just looks more "correct" as the artist created it. On TOM, the girls on the display look like "sexy girls" in dots...but when smoothed, something odd happens and they look like they have Down's Syndrome.

I find the opposite...I don't like the smoothed out look at all. The dots keep the look of the original but modernize it. For this game it looks ok, but is still inferior to the dot look IMO. Like you said, great there's options!

It's a matter of personal taste and I agree that I might like the dots better on other games. You make some good points, but I still like the upscaling for ACDC. Speaking of personal taste , I really don't like ToM or TSPP and owned already owned SS for many years. There is no danger of me buying any of those games any time soon. I will definitely purchase it for ACDC (and STLE when it comes out).

Awesome! Great videos, color dmd looks great. Thanks for your time and effort!

I got the notice that mine shipped yesterday. I can't wait!! Not to mention that my current DMD is missing a pixel and has a few LEDs that are slightly dimmer than the others.
