Great way to start the thread, since the single biggest misconception about vegans is that they don't get enough protein.

All protein comes from plants. Protein from animals means you are getting it second hand.

There is a very small percentage of people in the world who suffer from protein deficiency (less than 3%), and the majority of those people have a calorie deficiency.

    #5 5 years ago
    Quoted from Astropin:

The best diet is a balanced one. Anytime you go extreme in any one direction it usually does not end well.
We wouldn't have evolved the brains we have without a high protein diet.
Eat a salad, eat a steak, eat some veggies and fruit. Watch the carbs and especially the sugar.

A balanced healthy diet does not need to include animal products. Nothing "extreme" about it.

    Quoted from ForceFlow:

There have been a few unfortunate cases of insufficient vegan diets being given to babies & young children. While the diet can work for adults, it doesn't always have the right nutrients for young ones and can sometimes lead to malnutrition and starvation.

Generally speaking, those parents aren't too smart (I refrained from calling them idiots). If their children have malnutrition and have suffered from starvation it means that the children are not getting enough of the high density calories on the vegan diet, which is very important considering how small children's stomachs are. Meat has a very high caloric density compared to most vegetables and fruits, so care needs to be taken to feed them the higher caloric density foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, quinoa, beans, coconut milk etc.

There are tons of examples of children raised vegan without issue. I agree though, it will take a little more effort on the parents part to make sure that their children are getting the right nutrition and calories, but it really isn't that hard.

    Quoted from Rarehero:

Every day kids are becoming obese and unhealthy eating McDonald, fried butter, and sugar coated sugar. These articles aren’t about “vegan”, they’re about stupid. Like people who feed pasta to a cat to be “vegan”.
While I’m not a mega-healthy vegan all the time, I’ve been vegan for 20 years & know I get more balanced nutrition than the defensive people who’s dismiss me as a crazy twig eater while they stuff a bacon wrapped fried buffalo penis in their mouth after having 3 heart attacks.

Have to admit, I've missed your posts.

    #83 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rarehero:

Have you been around? I thought you had quit around the time I left.
Also, if you’re ever in Reseda - go to Vinh Loi...amazing vegan Vietnamese! Their soups are just incredible. Kevin, the owner and chef, does shit like this- dumplings on a “vegan duck” sub:

Haven't been around for about 10 months. Just meant I missed your posts from a combination of both of us being away.

Thanks for the reco on Vinh Loi. Will keep that one in mind.

    Quoted from gweempose:

It goes both ways, though. I have some vegan friends who are always judging me for what I eat and what I feed to my kids. One of my closest friends was just at my house yesterday. The first thing he did was open my refrigerator to see what was in there, and it wasn't because he was hungry.

Those are the idiots who give vegans a bad reputation. I hate that crap. Huge turnoff, and it actually has the opposite effect of getting someone curious about a vegan diet.

    Quoted from InfiniteLives:

i eat mostly vegetarian but the thing that I think would be the hardest to convert to vegan is taking out cheese. i dont do most dairy products like milk, sour cream, etc.. but cheese... veggie pizza has cheese, veggie burritos have cheese...
the idea that milk from cows is designed to make a tiny calf into a giant cow, i dont think humans need all that shit. especially when you throw in all the hormones and shit. but i just am a huge hypocrite cause cheese is great hah.
what do you guys/gals use as a substitute for cheese, or do you just for go it all together?
I grew up in a "steak and potato" family in nebraska but i eat meat maybe once a month if i have to these days. everything in moderation for me, except beer and pinball.

When I did my research on my digestive issues I was disappointed that I came to the conclusion that I would need to go full vegan instead of vegetarian, because I'd have to give up cheese. I read about most new vegans struggling to give up their cheese. I can't remember offhand what ingredient is in cheese (casein?), but it is very addictive, and is the reason that it is so hard to give up.

My biggest surprise so far has been how little I have missed cheese! Didn't see that coming. I haven't drank milk for decades, so that was no big deal, but man, it is astonishing how many processed foods have milk in it! That has been the hardest thing to get used to...things that you think are vegan aren't, because they have freaking milk in them. Government subsidies have made milk cheap, and they have a strong lobby behind them.

I tried my first vegan pizza from The Blaze that Rarehero was talking about. Pretty good! But to be honest, I think I would have enjoyed it just as much without the vegan cheese as I did with it.

    Quoted from Potatoloco:

I don't know about others, but my grocery bill has plummeted since I began plant-based eating. It's approximately $125 avg per week to feed a family of 7.

We ate a lot of steak and chicken, so our grocery bills have gone down as well. Things like Avocados, the Beyond Meat Burger, and things like certain nuts (Brazil, Macadamia) can bring the price of the vegan bill up a bit though.

    Quoted from ryanwanger:

For people who have digestive issues, I would recommend getting rid of dairy as the first step. If you have issues with it (which some people argue that over half the population does), it'll be very difficult to figure out unless you go cold turkey since it is in most meals.
Ice cream is awesome, but not worth feeling uncomfortable for several hours afterwards.

Could not agree more. Meat is not good for digestion either, but dairy can really play havoc with the gut. I think 60% of the worlds population is lactose intolerant. That says a lot.

Are there any Veggie Grills near you? They’re a rapidly expanding vegan fast-casual chain. They use Gardein & Beyond Meat for their proteins. Menu is “comfort food” but all vegan - burgers, tacos, salads, bowls, fries, etc. a few weeks ago they introduced a vegan Brat - it’s really good!

Awesome, they have one at The Market Place in Irvine, which is near my office. Will check it out!

    Quoted from clg:

It's pretty cool to see people taking a thoughtful view of what they eat. So easy to just eat the crap you are surrounded with and then wonder why things start going down hill. Amazing what a difference diet can make.

I have to say that I am really impressed with this thread so far. Even the posts from people who are not vegan and say that they won't go vegan have been civil and balanced. And this is definitely a topic that can cause heated arguments and name calling. So maybe Pinside isn't so bad after all?

    #134 5 years ago
    Quoted from ForceFlow:

Ok, that got me curious--what are good sources of vitamin D and calcium in a vegan diet?

As said earlier, sunshine. If you don't have that, then supplement. Lots of meat eaters are deficient in Vitamin D too.

As for calcium: broccoli, bok choy, collard greens, soy, kale, mustard greens, okra etc.

    #137 5 years ago
    Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

I havent, But Im so grateful you shared this with me!
I havent had digestive issues for years, mostly.
Mine were caused by reduced blood flow, and having a Doc that oversubscribed antibiotics, so the wrong bacteria, (Candida +)
flourished. No antibiotics now for 12 years, and no issues.

I couldn't agree more on the antibiotic thing. I had a very similar experience about 4 years ago: my Doctor gave me antibiotics because I was complaining of stomach issues/pain. Without doing any kind of testing, she simply threw antibiotics at me. Bam! Good bacteria in my gut was completely wiped out. Result? Full blown C. Diff. (clostridium difficile). C. Diff. is the number 1 cause of death in hospitals (it's highly contagious). It was the most sick that I have ever been in my life by far. It got pretty serious, as the drugs they were using to restore my good bacteria was not working initially, but it finally kicked in.

Since this happened, I have educated myself on antibiotics and the harm that they can cause. It's significant. I will never use antibiotics again unless it is a clear cut case where you know that they are required. For example, my best friend got the tip of his finger cut off in his cars fan blade. His doctor prescribed him antibiotics. My friend told the doctor he didn't need the antibiotics because he would not be using them. His doctor argued that he needed them to prevent infection. My friend told him that he simply planned on watching it and keeping the wound clean! If his wound did get infected, *then* he would take the antibiotics. I think that is the right approach. He had zero problems.

Thanks for the heads up on Veggie Grill Greg. It was awesome. The Beyond Meat burger is as close to meat as anything I’ve tasted. And the vegan cheese they use is excellent!

    Quoted from Rarehero:

Glad you liked it! Beyond Meat is VERY realistic...to the point where my girlfriend and I actually prefer "lesser" veggie burgers cuz when you cook Beyond Meat at home, it makes the house smell like actual meat!!! I do like them from time to time at Veggie Grill though, as I don't have to stink up my house.
People really like Impossible Burger, too. That one is getting a lot of traction at regular burger places...I've had it at The Counter, I think I heard Red Robin & Umami have it. There's a food truck in Northridge called Evolution Burger that carries both...you can chose or put both on one double!!! Here's a pic from their FB page...I haven't tried them yet, but all their pics look INSANE.

I've actually had the Impossible Burger at Red Robin, and to be honest, I much prefer the Beyond Meat burger that I had today. We have them at home too, and agree with you on the smell. Several times my oldest daughter has come home from school in the afternoon and said "you cooked a Beyond Meat burger didn't you!" Luckily I love the smell.

    Quoted from vicjw66:

Sodium and saturated fat seem kinda high in that burger.
    .

Yep. Not claiming that it’s health food. Just a healthier option than the real thing with cheese. I don’t plan on eating them more than a couple times a week.

It’s the whole food/plants that should make up the majority of a vegan diet. Ie, stay away from the processed stuff as much as possible

    Quoted from vicjw66:

They have one in Long Beach by Belmont Shore, which is not too far from where I live or work. So I went there today for lunch and got the beyond meat burger and fries. When they asked if I wanted anything to drink, I said Diet Coke and the cashier gave me this look like I just kicked her dog. Is Diet Coke not vegan? So I got the organic root beer. Kinda pricey at over $18 but easily the best vegan meat substitute I have ever eaten. If I were vegan or vegetarian, Veggie Grill would be a regular stop.
However, for someone who is not vegetarian, a grilled chicken sandwich with avocado would be a healthier, tastier, and less expensive option. Hopefully, they can reduce the saturated fat and sodium in future products without losing the taste or juiciness. I plan on going back and trying some of their other menu items that are a bit healthier.

All I can say as that I think it's pretty cool that you, as a non-vegan, went to Veggie Grill based on this thread and that you were not appalled at the taste of the beyond meat burger!

AND, you plan on going back!

I do agree about the price. Unfortunately I have noticed that the vegan restaurants are not cheap.

    #185 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rarehero:

We call that the “vegan tax”. I’m used to it at this point lol. That’s one thing I love about Blaze Pizza - they might be the ONE place that doesn’t charge extra for vegan cheese.

Chipotle's is good too, because you can get their Sofritas (soy meat substitute) at no extra cost. The flavor of their soy is pretty darn good in my opinion, and soy can be a challenge in terms of getting it to soak in the marinade/seasoning.

    #188 5 years ago
    Quoted from gweempose:

The sofritas tastes good, but the amount of sodium in it is insane! A healthier vegan option would be the fajita veggies.

I get the fajita veggies on top of the sofritas! But yes, you can order without sofritas, and if you order with no "protein" at all, did you know that you get to add the guacamole for free? Pretty cool.

Sodium has always been an issue with the meat substitutes unfortunately. Which is why they should all be used sparingly, and the *whole food* plant based diet is the key.

    #190 5 years ago

Yeah, I *never* order the tortilla. That thing is freaking huge.

    #193 5 years ago
    Quoted from Rarehero:

Oh, another recommendation for Rob & Vic ...do you have an Mendocino Farms around you? Great sandwich chain, and they always have 3 or 4 vegan sandwiches, usually a vegan soup, and a bunch of vegan sides like potato salad & curried cous cous. They also have a taco salad made with Impossible Burger crumbles that's very good.
    http://mendocinofarms.com/menus/

Sweet, they have one in Tustin! Another option I can try near my office.

    #195 5 years ago

I can see that you are going to cost me a lot of money in the next couple of weeks as I try these places out. The jackfruit is particularly interesting since I have not tried it yet and it has been highly recommended.

I think Halo Top is made with Stevia? However, it tastes like band-aids and sand, so I can’t recommend it.

Bummer. But you saved me money because I was going to give Halo Top a try.

The Ben & Jerry's Caramel Almond Brittle is still the best vegan ice cream I have tasted by far, but it's loaded with sugar and I feel like crap after eating too much of it.

    Quoted from swampfire:

I’m 48 hours into this meat-free diet and I can already feel a difference. Is it normal to get a little more blood flow, if you know what I mean?

Yes! It is one of the (ahem) biggest advantages to going vegan. Noticeable difference for sure. James Cameron is coming out with a movie about a vegan diet. He has said that men could stop taking Viagra by simply going plant based.

48 hours seems pretty quick to notice such a change though. Congrats.

I would never go vegan just to follow a fad.

Pretty sure nobody is asking you to.

    #277 5 years ago
    Quoted from jwo825:

I don't believe I said anyone was. I was just saying I would never follow a diet just because others are doing it. And there certainly is a lot of that going on. Not just for veganism, but for a lot of things. And my feelings are the same concerning the others as well.

Well you are really going out on a limb to say that people shouldn't do something just because other people are doing it.

    #281 5 years ago
    Quoted from jwo825:

I don't believe you will find a recommendation for what other people should do in any of my statements. I made one post stating what I believed, not what I thought others should be doing. I hardly think that's going out on a limb for anything and I didn't think it warranted any snarky responses.

You are right, you didn't say that nobody should do something just because others do it. You simply said that *you* wouldn't do something just because others are doing it. My bad.

Thanks for your valuable and insightful contribution to the thread.

The change to dairy free was easy with the exception of milk. I especially love it in my coffee. So far the unsweetened almond milk is my favorite but I'm wondering if anyone has a any suggestions?
By the way, the bratwurst from Beyond Burger is out now and it is spectacular.

Sadly (or is it?) I had to give up coffee nearly 2 years ago now because of stomach issues.

My wife still drinks coffee and she loves this stuff:
