from the experience of others I have talked to way more knowledgeable than I about these things the problem with taking signals off the switch matrix is that it is a " dirty" signal . triggering off the flashers is more commonly done .
a pinsider biglebowski came up with something called a switchshield that works with the switch matrix , I think you would get some good ideas from reading some of his experience and documentation
