What was the first machine that kept a record of the high score? And what was the first game of the modern era (77 and later), if any, that was designed without a pop bumper? Seems strange to not have a pop bumper, doesn't seem like pinball without one.

Elektra first solid state I can think of without. Actually pinballplusMN gets credit for that

No fear will be posted so I’ll beat everyone to the punch on that

Big guns going back a bit

The Shadow doesn't have pops either.

Question is, which one is older? Big Guns or Fire!? My guess is Fire!.

Does Spectrum count? I don't know if I consider it a true pinball.... I mean it was created just to get rid of Bally overstock parts.

Fire! Came out in June 1987, Big Guns September 1987

No pops, Pharaoh beat out Elektra by 2 months

EDIT Jungle Lord came first, then Solar Fire, then Pharaoh

Do you mean a high score with initials, or just any high score? I'd assume bally's first SS on the market would be the first to keep the score, unless some other obscure manufacturer beat them to it, but a lot of early SS games didn't have any battery for memory
