Words I do not like to see in front of the word SNOW: "accumulating" and "another round of."

January has supposedly been warmer than usual this year, since daily high temps have been a couple degrees higher than average. But strong winds have kept the "feels like" temperature in the teens, and we have had a lot of days with 100% cloud cover and are far below the normal amount of sun. The few days we had bright sun were also the lowest high temperatures.

As of a week ago we were well below the average snow for the month of January, but the 6" last Tuesday (officially at O'Hare - we got more than that here) and the 10"+ last night and today put us well over the January average. The low temps and lack of sun prevented any of Tuesday's 6" snowfall from melting and the current 10"+ has just piled on top of it. It is still snowing as I type this (the winter storm warning for our area won't expire until 6 PM today). Picture from my front window:

Took this pic awhile back and forgot about it: Mount Fuji Japan.

Did you use a cell phone camera, or did you use a standard camera with Fuji film?

Last weekend's snowstorm in the Chicago area was the biggest in more than five years. The mounds of snow at the side of the road from plowing will hang around until April. More snow due Thursday and Saturday mornings then a big drop in temperature for the weekend (and beyond) as the polar vortex brings highs near zero, lows below zero, and -30 to -40 wind chills by Monday AM.

The sun is out (but isn't melting anything). Here's a view out my front door. Our front walk should be between the two bushes.
    front walk (resized).jpgfront walk (resized).jpg
The mound at the end of the drive was too high for my snowblower after the snowplows came through. Had to shovel it out in chunks. The mailman is going to have a hard time reaching my mailbox surrounded by the piled up snow.

We're in the middle of a 20 day stretch with daily high temperatures around twenty degrees (or more) below the historical average high temps for this time of year. During this period the daily highs (around 15 degrees) have all been below the normal daily lows (around 17 degrees). And with measurable snow every day except one over the last two weeks we have had more than 28 inches of snow during that time. The low temps prevent any from melting, so it just keeps piling up. Between now and Tuesday morning another 6 to 10 inches of snow is forecast. As I type this the temp at O'Hare is 2 degrees with minus twelve wind chill (and heading down from there). Today set the coldest high temperature (4 degrees official at O'Hare) ever on Valentine's Day for Chicago.

Don't usually see these type of birds. Anyone know the species? Looks like a duck.

If it also walks like a duck and quacks like a duck . . . then it's a duck.

    Quoted from Spyderturbo007:

    Your math is off. (Degrees C x 1.8) + 32 = Degrees F

Yep. My mistake. It was after midnight and I was tired.
I remembered the equation, but divided by 1.8 (instead of multiplying by 1.8).
I am suitably mortified for making this basic error.
For punishment I guess I get to shovel the heavy snow that is falling here today.

    Quoted from EJS:

Here’s the damaged mailbox. Anyone had this happen to them before?

Snow plow destroyed our nice cedar mailbox and post a few years ago. I had seen where the community in which we live would replace such damage with a basic $25 box if you filed a claim. Not wanting to miss mail deliveries while waiting for their basic box, I replaced it with a more sturdy metal box and mounting post and filed a claim hoping to get $25 to offset part of the cost. A public works truck came by and the guy saw the new box already in place and informed me that their policy was to supply a new box only and no monetary payment, and since I had already purchased a new mailbox I no longer qualified for their cheap replacement. What a great policy.
