Nice blooms on that Floribunda! My father was a Rosarian and had hundreds of Roses. Its all we can do to keep our little rose bed alive. Did get it cleaned up and mulched this year, but no buds for us yet 500 miles north of you (we have had freezing temps the last three nights)

    Quoted from DBLM:

I am roughly 20-25 years younger compared to most of my waterfront neighbors but we made the decision to take the leap now so we can enjoy what the bay has to offer, even if it means I have to work a little longer.

We did the same thing 18 years ago when we moved from the city to a lake in a small town. Increased my commute time but the kids got to grow up on the lake and go to a school that didn't have 2000 kids. Its been 18 years of projects and we are not done yet, but nothing beats sitting down at the water under some shade trees with a cold one ...

When I first entered the Military, I was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. Stock photos off the internet below, but they give the idea. Most of the jumps were at night with full combat load, which was about 30-40lbs more than I weighed. Seems like we were always sitting around while chuted up waiting on the plane to be repaired (and no going to the bathroom after the chutes went on, sometimes for hours). When we finally got airborne, sometimes the pilot would get lost or not lined up correctly on the drop zone and we would have to circle back around. Meanwhile the guy next to you is throwing up from partying the night before and that smell is permeating throughout the aircraft. I didn't like jumping so much but believe me, by the time the light came up and we shuffled out the door, I was ready. Of course, we would still miss the drop zone and be put in the trees, and you had to recover your chute and hoof it back to the rally point, usually 2-3 in the morning, and be up and ready for PT the next day at 6 am.
Yeah, I am not voluntarily going parachuting these days ...

The lake was drawn down earlier this year and deeper (about 5 feet) while siltation controls and basins are being constructed in a couple of locations including the back of our cove. This is what our lakeshore looks like now and they are about ready to start digging a out a big section of it.

    Damn, they opened the dam...

We have been living with mud flats since September, as they put in erosion control and excavated out a large amount of silt in our cove. Gate still open, but excavated area has filled in with water so the view is a little better now. Won't start filling in till February this year. They took a lot of silt out, but of course wish they would have taken more. Normal pool will still be just around 24-30" by our dock.

The large birds were out in full force this morning. Never had wild turkey, heard they are all dark meat.

Nowhere as clear as @tractordoc's - taken from about 50' with a cell phone camera. I am on a 2600 acre, mostly wooded campus at work and it is not unusual to see as many 30-40 deer on the evening commute home exiting the campus. They are usually in groups of 4-7. Pretty bold too, will feed right up to road.

Debris from the Amazon Warehouse Roof hit by Friday's storms in Edwardsville just outside my office window. We are about 2 miles east by northeast of the distribution facility. Campus lost power till late Saturday morning, amazingly that and debris were about the only impact here. EF3 Tornado. Terrible loss of life, it is also amazing no other buildings in the industrial park collapsed, they are just about all tilt up construction, massive warehouses over one million square feet each with the roofs holding the walls together.

Went off propane for heat 19 years ago and switched to geothermal. It paid for itself around 3 years (went in in 2002 - propane prices spiked in 2003 and kept rising. I remember my neighbor complaining, meanwhile I was paying just 5.5 cent a kilowatt from the CO-OP).

The inside unit is now 19 years old but had one of its two pumps replaced under warranty and is still going strong. Pipes in the ground will last 50 years or more.

Crabapple we planted down by the lake 3 years ago to replace a weeping willow we planted that suddenly died in a matter of days due to a fungus. The nursery said the crabapple would love this spot and they were right.

Cardinal nest in our front bushes. They will become fledglings in about 11 days from hatching (this is about 5-6 days I think). Total time in the nest from egg laying to end is about one month. Then Cardinals will then abandon this nest and make a new one for another round (up to three a year)

Newly born Fawn at our office front door. We are on 2600 acres of woods and fields and the deer population is pretty large. This must have seemed like a safe place to leave the Fawn when it was early and no one was here. Mama should be coming back to collect her baby ... No deer strike reports today.

    Quoted from littlecammi:

So you looked out the front door and spotted that fawn?

I didn't see it when I came in, but co-workers did - it was literally five feet from the door! I just checked, gone now, mama must have circled back.

Had a storm with super high wind blow through yesterday morning. Good news, no damage to house or cars. Bad news, lost two large trees in the woods, our 15 year old Sand Cherry in the front planter, and some large limbs off Silver Maple next to Driveway.

    Quoted from Grayman_EM:

Silver Maples IMO should never be planted on a property as they are soft wood and attrac

Yeah we inherited it when we bought the property. Sugar Maple right next to it, no damage. Neighbors Silver Maple, no damage. We have talked about cutting this down before, but we will probably just trim it up. It is pretty far from the house so no danger there.

A second storm, Saturday night, just 36 hours after the first one - Silver Maple took another beating. Still mostly intact but I am getting tired of cleaning up storm damage. Haven't even touched the downed trees in the woods. Can't remember back to back severe storms like this ever. Good news - Electrical COOP pretty much keep the power on. Cable went out for a couple of hours, that was about it. Bad news, some of my neighbors lost some nice trees and had home and garage damage.

    Quoted from mbwalker:

    I *think* it's just a harmless watersnake

Yeah, looks like a northern water snake. The older they get, the darker they get and can become almost be black. Not poisonous but they can bite. We are on a large lake and have lots of these guys roaming around. As the saying goes, they are more scared of you than you are of them.

    Quoted from screaminr:

Looks a bit like a tiger snake I saw while walking the dogs but these aren't harmless .

You guys in Australia have way more than your fair share of highly poisonous snakes, spiders, snails, etc. Seems like everything is trying to kill you there...

Just got back from a trip to SC - stopped at Biltmore in Ashville along the way. Largest private residence in the US (It is still privately owned but open for tours) Total estate about 8,000 acres, down from 125,000 acres (of which 85,000 was sold to the US government for part of the Pisgah National Forest).

House has a game room (Billiards), two lane bowling alley, indoor swimming pool and gym... Pretty cutting edge for 1895.

    Quoted from Irishbastard:

Second year attending "Flames of Hope" night for my wife, Breast cancer awareness month.

My thoughts are with you and your wife - my wife is a 10 plus year survivor, caught early by our family doctor. Went through the whole thing (lumpectomy, radiation, chemo). Last year her Oncologist declared her fully cured and no need to go back. And breast cancer treatments are even better today. We don't even think about it anymore in future planning. Fully expect her to outlive me, though in my case I will probably fall off the roof or blow up my garage before I get to old age

    Quoted from Zartan:

Copperheads are so pretty! Glad you didn’t kill it!

They used to say the babies were more venomous - I think that has been dis-proven. Still a bite from any Copperhead would not be fun and is painful, but it is very unlikely to kill you (very low venom compared to rattlesnakes, for instance). Most bites don't require anti venom (many are "dry", no venom at all), just observation and standard medical care.

This maple in our front yard is usually the prettiest of all our trees this time of year. There is a small paperbark maple with red leaves in the planter that is growing very slowly in the shadow of the big tree. But it manages to add an inch or so every year.

This is all that is left from the 100 vehicle wreck on I-55 in Central Illinois last Monday that killed 7 and injured many more. Dust storm from farmers plowing fields to plant and super high winds.
