Looks like a Common Golden Eye.

Yep, female with her ducklings. Male has a lot more white plummage and a white spot on the face. Should be some yellow on the tip of the bill but I think can't see due to the picture resolution.

Right on! I wasn't sure. The Canadian geese that were breeding have owned that little pond since about May. Haven't seen any other species in there until today.

At first it looked like a duck/loon hybrid. But once I got a little closer I realized it was a duck.

Sorry about the pics I had to zoom in with my phone. Momma wouldn't let me get close at all. Having my dog with me probably didn't help

Don't usually see these type of birds. Anyone know the species? Looks like a duck.

If it also walks like a duck and quacks like a duck . . . then it's a duck.
But I see that LTG has already verified it is a duck.

But shouldn't a Golden Eye look more like this?

You are of course correct. Sorry, my mistake.

It is of course Genus Bucephala.

First time? And you're able to take pictures? I don't think Superman would be able to pry my hands off the controls.

    #1908 2 years ago

Pic taken just before the instructor turned the controls over to me. The helicopter was very enjoyable, great visability.

What do you do with a snake like that, on your property?

    #1912 2 years ago
    Quoted from golfingdad1:

What do you do with a snake like that, on your property?

While my answer may not be agreed upon by all, but since I have many 4 legged friends on my property 24/7, the snake in the picture become a few inches shorter and then relocated permanently to the woods next door.

I will say I make every effort to positively ID creatures as friend or foe. The last one was colored "red on yellow"... it too was permanently relocated after my dog chased it and thankfully listened to me when I yelled at him to stop the pursuit.

It boils down to "It's us or them :. Lots of four leggged friends here as well who would go after them as well I want to protect.

And that's only about 1/2 of what they dumped! Saves the tree companies boat loads of money when they can dump for free. I really should buy one of those mini lumber mills.
