I was looking for snacks to bring to friend's get together and thought about those. If I had read this I would have given it a shot. Next time.
From the flight home from Tokyo. This shot was taken about 4-500 miles off the coast of Japan. I’ve never seen anything like it. The radio chatter started on the frequency as other crews coming across the Pacific saw it (it was right on a designated route). One pilot chimed in and gave the explanation…
Taiwanese fishing fleet - they use massive arrays of LED lights to attract fish and squid. Absolutely insane to see literally in the middle of nowhere. This was just one small group out of probably 6 that we saw.

Was a limited edition item and sold so well, Hershey made it a regular line item.

What i am doing above is planting tissue culture sugarcane plants. Basically you take the growing point of a cane plant, and in a lab make it produce 500 offspring - all genetically identical to the parent, and perfectly clean from diseases. Costs about $2.50 a plant, so i planted around $20 000 worth (1 Ha). We then use this as a central source for the local farmers to buy thier cane plants from, so we are very confident it has no diseases. This particular variety has just been bred, and is showing a lot of promise to improve productivity and sugar content.

Used to do all that tissue culture when i was into mycology as a hobby.
Had a 6' flow bench in my home office and a homemade keg pressure cooker for sterilising Petrie dishes.
I'd sell the cloned culture's on dishes and post them across country.
Good fun.

I saw a documentary about the Humboldt squid and the way they catch them that way. It is literally a massacre. I will try to find it.
Could not find it. It was a documentary on the intelligence of the Humboldt, which showed them using that method to catch them.
It was showing their intelligence by several methods including pulsating colors that may signify communication.
And then the locals begin their slaughter.
I’m not trying to make any point. It was chilling.

Better than a crash when you don't expect it

A tree did fall into the house last year. The city decided to cut down some other trees that were potentially dangerous/supposedly deteriorating.

That sucks! Hopefully nobody hurt. I like trees, but not hanging over my house.
Quoted from golfingdad1:Hopefully nobody was injured
Nobody was hurt, as the homeowners were overseas. They have a house sitter that tentatively lives there now in the basement.
There I was strolling through the back yard with Charlie for his pre-bedtime potty walk, immediately after deploying these decoys, an attempt to keep the community kitties off my car and from chewing on my car antenna. I kid you not, I just happen to pause and look down and see this lad / lass directly in my path.
I gently picked it up by the tail and escorted it to the adjacent woods. Just a small 12 incher, but made my toys look like, well, toys.
What are the odds!

Does your car have a key fob with a button that will make the horn blow? Last cat that got on my car jumped 3-feet in the air and hauled ass when I did that.
Snakes don't like being picked up by the tail anymore than you'd like being picked up by the finger.
Best to slide your hand under them.
This guy was a wild snake i picked up out of an old Ford battery box in the driveway here. If you handle thEm like that they stay calm (non poisonous of course)
Apologies to those who have seen it before.
Quoted from JohnnyPinball007:Does your car have a key fob with a button that will make the horn blow?
It does, I'm just trying non annoying tactics for my neighbors sake first.
Quoted from punkin:Snakes don't like being picked up by the tail
I'm sure they don't, but I don't like trips to the clinic for anti venom either. This one was one of the few poisonous snakes we have in our area. I felt it best stay away from its venomous end since I had no gloves.
Quoted from golfingdad1:This is what you need to when you don't install the fire hydrant per the drawing.

My aunt sent me this picture outside her apartment building which is less than a year old. They goofed a hydrant too

Jet contrails start out as straight lines, but if there are high altitude winds, they get pushed around into interesting shapes. I see these quite a bit where I live. It also takes the correct lighting to see them so vividly. That's why they can appear or disappear quickly.
They can look like a rocket spiraling out of control, or sometimes weird hook shapes, but that's all they are - trails of condensation behind commercial aircraft forming long thin clouds that get pushed around by air currents.
My wife feeds the squirrels on our back deck religiously every day. She has named one "Patches" cause it has patches of white fur on head, neck & back. Anyway this guy apparently got into a fight or was somehow injured, ( left arm shoulder). Looks like it has swollen to size of golf ball. Seems to be be eating well but does tend to favor it when bounding around.
Thought it might be a tumor for a while, but last time we saw it shoulder swelling has reduced in size by about half.

Quoted from Atari_Daze:Watching our work neighbors load an emergency fire pump house bound for a drilling rig somewhere.
Here is the electric motor coupling half for a similar set up inside the above pump house. The bore is 3-3/8" which could be anywhere from a 100-500HP motor.
I found it funny, that despite it being a non-electrical component, even the couplings for these fire pumps have to be UL listed.
This hunk of iron was $1000.00, I think most of that due to being UL Listed.

Why ul listing needed? Good grief man they have their fingers in every pie.
$5000-$50,000 just for that irrelevant listing. Maybe it was required. My guess.
Ran across a nice little box turtle on my morning walk a few days ago, all shiny from the rain.

I saw a different box turtle in the same spot a few months ago. 20230416_081843.jpg
Some large black vultures were hanging around in some trees nearby also. They are big birds with a wingspan of 4-1/2 to 5 feet.
