    Quoted from jaytrem:

The crazy flood was about 2 years ago. We got a similar about of rain, but it was over 2 days rather than 2 hours. Luckily it still had quite a ways to go before it hit the house this time. My emergency pinball float system can be quickly assembled, would prefer to never try it out though...

I'd be worried about the pins actually floating, and if they did, how about tipping? Did you consider a frame and jacks/blocks?

Yes, tipping is a concern, not so much about the buoyancy. I'm pretty sure they should be okay if the heads are down. That's kinda required for them to float much anyway.
But yes, it would make sense to add some poles to stablelize things. The floats are for when I'm not around, really just plan B. I set things up before I leave for vacations. Wouldn't want my wife or neighbors to have to deal with anything more complicated.

Gotta admit, I'd love to see if it works!

    #5353 11 months ago

Wow! That is absolutely genius! Are those dock floats? Do you have to close/remove heads in case there might be a flood? I’m thinking I might do the same thing.

Gotcha! When we had our flooding here last year, folks were flying down the river causing wakes that made things worse for the folks with flooding.

    #5355 11 months ago

I doubt they would tip? The only way is if one side were higher than the other. Or the heavier pins were on one side. That would be easy to remedy by keeping them in the Center of the float, it would cause the outside pins to lean Center.

Yup, they're dock floats. If I don't lower the heads the machines would hit the ceiling pretty quickly, so those do need to come down. That's most of the work. I think it can handle about 4 feet with them down. The EMs could float a little higher since the heads would be removed. I need to buy one more float for them. Stupid machines keep procreating.

Have you looked into collectable insurance? I have a small ditch outback that despite a heavy downpours, it's very well behaved. Maybe 1/3 full after ~6" of rain. Not in a flood area, but the county's been fooling around with drainage in the area. Just drains from land nearby. But with the price of pins nowadays, I bought insurance just to calm my nerves. The insurance was reasonably priced.

I've looked at FEMA flood maps, LIDAR scans of the area (cool to look at), etc. - all looks good. I still worried. I'll probably bump up a small retaining another wall 4" this summer since it needs rebuilt anyways.

This is all that is left from the 100 vehicle wreck on I-55 in Central Illinois last Monday that killed 7 and injured many more. Dust storm from farmers plowing fields to plant and super high winds.

My daughter travels to/from work this way but was working from home that day...

The other day I caught this idiot on film. Delivered pics to the police the next day.

Note the second homeless man watching on in entertainment.

When destruction becomes entertainment I begin to mobilize.

    Quoted from mtn-:

Whats the deal with the(imho) poorly managed cabling?

They’re phone/internet cables. ComEd came out and replaced the line poles a few years back, it was up to the various companies to redo their lower stuff, but they don’t care enough to, so this is how it is until they finally get around to upgrading stuff.

Can’t remember if I’ve posted pizza porn before, but here ya go. Cooked on an Atlas Pizza Steel in a conventional oven, top rack preheat oven to 550F then broiler on high to get the temp up around 650-700. It may not be a real pizza oven (I have one of those too) but goddamn for $130 CDN this thing cranks out some serious pizza at a fraction of the cost or hassle required. About a 4 minute cook compared to 2 minutes on my Ooni. Bonus is the steel holds heat like crazy and it will stabilize your oven for any baking. I suspect even brownies @punkin…

Simple recipe, sauce is good tomatoes and salt, buffalo mozzarella, some nice prosciutto (add after cooking) and finish with rocket and a squeeze of lemon. Pick your favourite dough recipe - this one is a no-knead one from Jim Lahey (not that Mr.Lahey) out of NYC.

Pizza looks great, and you got it in one.

Never thought they'd be that popular.

I learnt about the squeeze of lemon from an Italian pizza shop owner about 25 years ago. I've since turned everyone i've ever shared pizza with onto it.

I usually let everything live I see in the wild. But that snake would be terminated quickly. The next step after trying to get in is often actually getting in. Looks like it’s knocking at your door.

Black snake trying to get on my porch last night

It's looking for a piece of ass, or a bird? My 2 were doing the hanky-panky a couple of days ago. They freak me out when I don't know they are there, but they keep the bad ones away, or so I'm told. I've only seen one poisonous snake around my property in 20+ years...

    #5395 11 months ago

Unlikely a snake would be trying to get into a house unless there was food there for it. That means either birds, rats or possums in the roof here.

Lots of Carpet Pythons round here in peoples roof cavities for that reason.

    snakecarpet1 (resized).jpgsnakecarpet1 (resized).jpg

We get Black and Brown snakes here, but they don't come into peoples houses much.
