This is about an eleven year old girl, whose life has been changed forever because of the surgery. This is about a family, whose lives were normal until just a month or so ago. This is about how cancer can change your life in a heartbeat. No one gives a shit about anything else.

Daniel from Project Pinball has arranged to have a pinball and booth set up for a tourney, all proceeds are to help the Birdsley family and Alivia's battle with cancer. If you can help at the booth for an hour or so please sign up on the google doc sheet link below. Here is the message below from Daniel at Project Pinball.

We want to help in any way that we can. Project Pinball will have a booth at the Chicago Expo and we are planning on hosting a high score tournament. All of the money we raise we want to donate to support Vince and Alivia. We have everything in place, the only thing we are lacking is the man power to do it. Do you think you could rally some people to sign up for volunteer hours?

We currently have a GoogleDocs for volunteers to sign up to be at the booth. Here is the link to access it: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EJOdtsNpgFs6a5XR0fG9CZJQuDoC76eTcaWhyqaffzg/edit?ts=56002f8b#gid=0

    Quoted from Tilt:

Bryan, Not sure if you are wanting to, but if you can maybe get Lloyd to go along, I am willing to bring up a megatouch game to Expo, and maybe you can have Lloyd auction it off at his show and 100% of the proceeds go to your friends. Let me know and if so ill get one together

    Troy

The LTG : ) Show is 6pm to 7pm on the Friday night at Expo. Could someone directly involved with this be at my show to explain the what for and take care of the money we raise, please ? I'll take care of the auction.

    Thank you,

Bump for help at the LTG : ) Show.

I got an official NFL autographed photo today from the Vikings for the benefit. Still waiting on an autographed Tony Oliva baseball from the Twins and something from the Wild. That should be here in the next week or two. I can send you pics of the stuff if you want/need them before hand.

I've been trying to make this work, Lloyd, but I don't think it's going to. There's not many locals going to Expo this year and those that are, will be at Terry's on Friday. How hard can it be. 11 year old girl went through cancer surgery to remove a grapefruit sized tumor in her abdomen. Surgery involved 3 anesthesiologist teams, two hospitals and two surgical doctors, along with their people. Five days in ICU. Throw in about a month's worth of lost wages for both Vince and Jill while they dealt with this. I don't care how good your insurance is, I wouldn't want to add up all those bills.

I met up with Vince yesterday and we had a nice visit. Normally, this time of year, Vince's front yard would be filled with Halloween decorations. And I mean filled. His is the house all the local kids need to go to. It's one of the nicest set ups I've ever seen. And yes, there's usually something that will make you shit your pants while walking to the front door. Vince didn't do it this year. No desire. Needless to say, his thoughts were elsewhere.

Alivia is doing great.....for now. Vince said she's actually eating again and went back to school today.

Vince also said, her cancer is extremely rare. Only about 150 known cases in the US a year. Because of the rarity, there hasn't been a lot of research done and not a lot is known. What is known, is there's about a 30% chance it will come back. So while Alivia feels fine now, she will have scans done every 3 months, for now. Those scans will be less frequent if nothing is found.

There were other complications from the surgery, but Vince has decided to keep that a personal family matter.

I'm sure Alivia is too young to understand what all this means. That's a good thing. Right now, she just needs to be a normal kid and do things normal kids do. It's Vince and Jill who get to think about her future, every minute of every hour of every day. I know I would.

    #210 8 years ago

Bryan, I just wanted to say thanks for this update, for organizing what you have and providing all the information you have throughout this post since the beginning. Vince is lucky to have someone like you as a friend. With a two-year old daughter myself, I tear up every time I read your updates. My thoughts and prayers continue for Alivia, and I pray that the other complications from surgery were not too extensive or some can be overcome or minimized over time. She seems to be a strong & resilient little girl, and we should all be proud of her for enduring what she has had to so far. God bless her.

I'm glad to hear that you are being there for them. It's super important.

You can't really understand the toll that something like this takes on you mentally until you've been there.

Still think about Alivia and her family all the time, and for now I'm glad to hear that some things are starting to resemble "normal" for her.

    #213 8 years ago

I should also mention, after Expo, Brian and I will sit down and make a list of everything that was donated. We then need to decide what gets sold here, on Ebay or at the silent auction.

It's not too late. Anyone interested in donating items for the auction, please let me know. It doesn't have to be pinball related. Just something you think others might be interested in.

The signup google doc is a bit confusing? There are 2 Fridays? I suspect the first night is Wednesday and the next is Thursday.
I'd like to signup, but want to make sure I'm getting the times right first.

Here's a small update from Vince on Alivia's Caring Bridge page. While she's doing so much better, Alivia will have issues she'll need to deal with as she grows older. But at least for now, she's back to school, trying to catch up and being a normal 11 year old.

We returned Wed to see the main surgeon, who gave her a glowing report. Things look great as far as how she's healing. We don't expect to have to return to see her again so that was great news. Thursday we met with Liv's oncologist. She was able to finally share the pathology report with us. As we've already shared, Liv was found with a rare type of tumor called an Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor (IMT). It was fairly large, and was completely removed from her pelvic region. Unfortunately that is the best known way to deal with these types of tumors and with the tumor went some other things, but her overall health is more important obviously. We will share those details with Liv as she gets older.

Without getting into too much detail and the fact I'm not a doctor in a nutshell an IMT is a rare mesenchymal tumor in which only 150-200 cases are diagnosed per year. There is a roughly 35% chance of recurrence. Liv has the genetic issue with the ALK gene which makes recurrence more likely, which stinks. She will have a PET scan late December again, this will be her next procedure, so she gets to heal and get back to normal until then. Our hope of course at that time is they find no further evidence of tumor regrowth in any area. There are many more things going on but for sake of Liv's privacy, we'd simply like to ask everyone to support her and keep her in your prayers both now and in the future. She will deal with this for a lifetime.

    #220 8 years ago

I also thought I'd share a portion of an Email I got from Vince last week. It just goes to show what kind of people Vince and his wife Jill are. Even though the money we've raised so far will never cover all the medical costs...

Anyway, we would like to donate a portion (20%) of the BBB (Beer Bash Benefit) to Cancer Kids Fund at Children's Hospital.

"Beyond providing the very best medical care, there are many services and amenities that provide extra care and comfort to kids and families in the midst of a cancer or blood disorders journey. These special services are made possible in large part through the Cancer Kids Fund, which supports patients and families by ensuring specialists like nutritionists and psychologists are part of each child’s medical team; supporting complementary medical services like massage therapy; offering a variety of art supplies, toys and games for patients; providing parking vouchers; offering support services like our sibling play area and much, much more."

Every single thing was directly beneficial to Liv - this is where the money will go.

Also, I was thinking.... anything anyone would like to bring and donate from this list: http://www.childrensmn.org/giving/giving-toys-and-gifts/wish-list I will collect and deliver to Children's Hospital.

OK. There you have it. This event is going to change a lot of lives... I can just feel it.

    Vince

Thanks for the update. Had I been born a hundred years earlier, I would have died at age six or then at age sixteen from ailments that are now treatable by modern medicine. Many of us live, as it were, on borrowed time and thanks to the advances of medicine. Supporting medical research makes that possible for others.

I also ran into three individuals at Expo who asked how Alivia was doing. They have no idea who she is or anyone in the family.

They then each handed me $100 for the cause. People are amazing!!

    #223 8 years ago

I'm sending a little something direct to Alivia tomorrow--

I never, ever answer these types of solicits, but this is different, and I applaud your efforts.
I have 2 young daughters of my own, and this hits home.

Here's hoping things get better, for all involved.

If you're taking remote bids on the silent auction, please post details; I'd definitely bid and pay associated shipping. Thanks!

    Quoted from Tribonian:

We've put some thought into doing this and we're not sure how to handle it and whether it would even be feasible. What we are planning on doing is listing some of these items for auction here on Pinside. The Rob Zombie signed translite is a good example. We want to make as much money as possible for the Birdsley family but we also want to be fair to those who come to the benefit and pay the $20.

Anything in particular you were interested in?

Good idea - would bid too. Mostly on T-shirts; maybe on a translite. Would pay for shipping of course. Any picture ?

    Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

People can PM you in advance a starting bid and the maximum amount they would spend on that item (and in total). You would have that information during the auction.

    Quoted from jlm33:

Sounds simple enough, but what if even 3 people bid on 10 different items. We now need someone to keep track of those 10 items and continually update the auction with those 3 peoples bids. I'm just not sure it's worth the hassle for something like a shirt. The only option I see would be to start the auction with the Pinsider's highest bid and go from there. But that's not really fair to the Pinsider.

We will, however, pick some of these items and have an auction on Pinside. The Rob Zombie translite is a good example. There will be others. Once we have everything, we'll figure it out.

    #233 8 years ago

I've got a little auction going for some Steve Tsubota lenticular score cards. Hand crafted by Steve and given away as gifts. These were never available to purchase....until now.

LONG OVERDUE UPDATE. Not so much of an update on Alivia's health (that has been covered prior - she is doing remarkably well, considering where she was just a month ago!). I'm Liv's father Vince, and I want to again extend a public thank you to Bryan Kelly and Brian Millard for being the local guys coordinating the upcoming Bash, as well as Ryan Marincovich for his support and spearheading the online presence for just about everything that's been done to date. I couldn't begin to thank these guys enough, or the rest of the great people helping out and supporting my family by donating time, dollars, sending cards/gifts, dropping by meals, etc. that have gotten us through this very trying time. I truly believe all the support has made a huge difference for Liv as well as my entire family. Our gratitude can never properly be extended in a post, but its real and hearth felt. Also thank you to Alary's Bar, everyone that donated auction items, and anyone that I've likely missed which is probably a great number of people. You're an amazing bunch.

I wanted to share just one story that truly touched Alivia and our family. Some of you probably remember and/or know Brad Czernik (I don't personally know Brad - we crossed paths online back in the RGP days, and may have possibly met at Expo - we actually haven't even discussed that). Without getting into tons of detail, Brad works at Resurrection College Prep High School in Chicago (all girls school). Brad came up with the idea to put together a couple of large boxes of cards and letters from the girls from Resurrection... along with many other gifts (sweatshirts, t-shirts, stuff animals, full boxes of KitKat, etc etc), and we received those boxes while Alivia was at the hospital. She started opening the 100's upon 100's of cards and finally finished them 2 weeks later. It really touched her, and us. If Liv turns out anything like the girls that wrote these letters.... I will consider myself blessed.

Anyway, sort of out of the blue a few weeks back, she asked if we could visit the school and some of the girls so we've decided to take the entire family to Chicago over Thanksgiving - we will be flying in on Tue the 24th and going directly to Resurrection. We are trying to plan some other fun activities/sight seeing while there, we will of course be doing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We're flying back to Mpls on Friday evening. If anyone has any good advice - I still need to book a hotel that is close by downtown ideally (and will allow rental cars), and any other advice on things to do, good place to have Thanksgiving Day meal, etc. Would sure appreciate the help.

Again, we can't thank everyone enough for their support and generosity. Love and thanks, The Birdsley's

I would like to provide some follow-up to Vince's post above, which was very nice. I will say that no matter how much I enjoy pinball machines, the one thing that has kept me active in this hobby throughout the years is the people. While machines come and go, the friendships I have created throughout my time in this hobby are absolutely the best thing to come from it. As soon as I saw Bryan post about Alivia's situation, I wanted to see what I might be able to do to help. I knew financial assistance for Vince and Jill would be appreciated, as would the donation of items for auction. But I really wondered in what way I might be able to help Liv through a tough situation.

I spent time thinking what I could do for her and this is what I came up with. I offered to buy and send as many greeting cards as the staff and students at our school wanted to send to her. I created a Google Form that had requests for 467 cards, I figured there was crossover of classes but was absolutely ecstatic about the response. A fair number of classes bought or created their own cards as well. I have to say when you end up with two boxes weighing 44 lbs. comprised mostly of cards to send to an 11-year old girl it puts a huge smile on your face. I get asked daily about how she is doing and when staff shared an email update from Vince with students, everyone was touched.

As Vince mentions, we have "known" each other for years (since RGP) and his comment about us possibly crossing paths was the exact thing I recently told someone when they asked if I knew him! There is no doubt that the pinball community is like any dysfunctional family, there is often disagreement and differing opinions, but we come together in support of our own. And needless to say, our school cannot wait to meet Liv and her family!

I certainly don't want to complicate the silent auction but I'd definitely pay $50 each plus shipping for up to 2 towltunes. I don't need anyone to bid up incrementally on my behalf- don't care if I overpay compared to the next highest bid and if I am outbid, I'm that much happier for the Birdsleys.

The lenticulars are awesome too, but I need to save up for the machines first!

Sorry but no. There are just too many complications.

I will say, we may have an auction here on Pinside for the Rob Zombie tranlite. More to come!!

I just read through these posts. I don't have kids, so I kept skipping over this...

Finally clicked on it today. This is a terrible thing for a child and their parents to go through.

My wife and I don't have kids, but we have nieces and nephews and I'd like to think there would be this kind of support if anything like this ever happened to them. We just donated.

We hope Alivia continues to get better.

I thought I'd share a photo of Alivia with some of the cards, letters, gifts, etc. she received over the past couple months. She's wearing the Resurrection sweatshirt from the girls school in Chicago we'll be visiting this month. She wanted me to thank each one of you for your kindness! Love & Kisses, From Alivia

Here's the translite signed by Rob Zombie & Sheri Moon... HERE'S WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO... KT will take "silent bids" from Pinsiders until noon on Sunday via email. Just email her your MAX AMOUNT... people at Alary's on Sunday will write their max amount on a card and drop it in a box.

At 6:00, Bryan and crew will sort the bids out and see who gets it.

Send email bids to: [email protected] Again, noon Sunday is the cut off. Please give her your name, address, and bid amount so we're not guessing who "PinSnakeTurbo107" is.

We'll have some other cool goodies to bid on in person Sunday, but the Team Alivia crew thought it would be best to give others a shot at this one. THIS IS THE ONLY signed translite we have available from Rob & Sheri, so GOOD LUCK!
