Got my feet wet with my Lectronamo and think I'm going to start this one fairly soon. Got it In august and it looks like a fun little rebuild and a eye pleasing design. The cabinet is in not bad shape. Minor damage and separating on the bottom. The cabinet end of it will be left till next spring when I can do the sanding and repainting in the outside. Never know if I am super bored I will find a way to sake it to the paint shop at work and possibly do the cabinet there. I like the bright colours and think that alone will look nice next to the bright Lectronamo.

I have already started to try to get it working but the main board is shot and damaged. Im not sure what state the driver board is at as I could not get it to boot. The power board seems to be indicating the correct power at the terminals. I decided to get the ball rolling and already ordered a new all in one PI-1/X4 board from Flippp. This will be a easy start by replacing all the boards with this unit I hope.

The back cabinet has minor damage but the glass is almost perfect. It has no flaking at all but only has one small scratch on the back. Not sure what state the score displays are in yet but will know when the new board shows up. I do know the lights all work as when I was trying to boot it they all lit up but i have started to already remove them

Playfield is in WAY better shape than the Lectronamo was. This one has some planking going on and what appears to be normal minor wear. No areas are missing wood layers. The inserts are slightly sunk but don't appear to be all that bad. The Mylar is peeling under the pop bumpers. Rubbers are 100% shot and the plastics, lane guides are cracked and damaged in areas. Flipper assemblies need to be rebuilt and new flippers would not hurt. The drop down targets are replacement over the years so I think a new set will look better. I HATE the plastic spinner so much. I like the satisfaction of hitting that puppy dead on and watching it flip for miles. Think I might entertain the idea of doing a spinner on the cnc that looks the same but has some weight behind it.

Not sure what direction I should take on the playfield just yet.

Option 1 - Clean it up with a very, very light sand and possibly mr. clean pad then level the inserts with clear then shoot it with a few coats of clear keeping the original art on it.......or

Option 2 - Remove all inserts give it a better sanding and shoot a thin clear. Then proceed to re airbrush the full thing like I did the stern. Artwork looks nice and easy when it comes to the base colours but the black outlines looks like a handful. New inserts then the final clear to finish it off. The natural wood areas are also in good shape as they are so no staining is required.

The underside is not that bad but appears to have some surface corrosion on metal areas. Think this time around i will either replace all lamp sockets or very thoroughly clean all as I never did this on the stern and had some minor lamp issues after reassembly.

Decided to repaint the play field like the last go around. This time this one is not blistering or raised in areas sure to damage. It has planking and the thin layer of paint and possibly some very thin wood is lifting with it.

Ok got what I think is a valid question about fixing “ planking “ as you can see in the pics it’s happening and I want to address it and my head is thinking all over the place. I read spraying clear on the top locks it but that questionable is it not ? Granted the clear will bond to the top but if taped over later for painting and then peeled back later I’m going to assume the clear and what’s under can still possibly lift if what below is not secure.

My proposed solution is this. Because I’m repainting and don’t mind giving the surface a light sand I might try to use thin CA adheasive over theses areas. This goes back to my Rc building days. Using thin ca glue actually penetrated the wood (balsa,bass and ply) and would lock down delaminating areas in seconds. It would actually soak in then harden and then you could sand and repair. It hardly if never actually lifted the grain. It’s so thin it actually won’t work as a filler but that would be the next step.

I’m thinking of possibly lightly sanding the areas, blowing out the dust, pouring the ca on the area, trowel quickly with a 3” stainless putty knife and let it work it’s magic. I know it will cause possible hazing of adjacent areas due to it evaporating but in a garage or outside that has direct moving air on the play field it won’t happen. I’m going to sand again and fill after anyways.

Thoughts ?

Playfield is all stripped now. Removing the harness on the underside was easy this time after know what to do after the other machine. Gave it 2 washes in the dishwasher.

Today was a good day. I removed the old boards from the back cabinet and installed the new FLIPPP board. I replaced all the connector ends to be sure everything was getting good contact.

Did my first power up and everything looked good on the board with the LED indicators. The score display was only working on player 2 for some reason and the credit showing partial numbers. A little bit of contact cleaning for the displays and now player 1 and 2 work. PLayer 3 and 4 displays for some reason are missing chips from them. I am not sure why but they are removed. Any tips for possibly finding these so I can try to solder some back in?

Trying to access the new FLIPPP menus was not working out for me so i had to did deeper. I found that the actual coin door switch itself was bad and not making contact. Temporarily I will use a spare arcade switch I have to get it working.

So yesterday i got a message from another Pinsider telling me a Sinbad Playfield was for sale con KIJIJI. It was a fully populated and look in decent shape and the seller accepted $100. This got me all excited as with a second playfield I could possibly play the game and work out some other kinks while I repaint the old playfield that came with my machine. All the mechanical / electric under this second unit looks like it a day one release. Its missing a few bulbs but I was not going to let that slow me down.

I slapped it on the cabinet, replaced a missing fuse and powered up the machine. The new playfield works! I can actually play the game! The left roll overs are not working but I think they need adjusting, and bulbs are required. All switches and flippers seem to work perfect. Im going to now install the new rubbers i have on hand and install the bulbs and go smash out some first time high scores!

Also got this yesterday. Its another back glass that I will make a frame for and hang up.

Got the old play field all cleaned up and scanned it. Scan file all stitched up is 8 gig lol. You want to see all the wood grains? this is the file you need then lol. Going to now remove the rest of the inserts and its almost ready for a clear coat to lock everything down.

Took out the inserts and bar sanded the field. Confirmed what my hands were feeling prior to the sand. Sanding fixed the issues.

Sanded and also primed the bottom. Need to now fix and fill 2 deep damaged areas then next weekend it will get the 2K clear to give me a nice level and smooth surface to start painting on.

I think this field also might need the tinted coverage I did on the Lectronamo to help blend / cover the wood damaged areas. Looking into colour options for that now.

Need to get my rear in gear! Used the same transparent grey I used on the Lectronamo but this time instead of 3 coats i just did a light single one. It covered up the faded and discolored areas nicely.

My new display chips came in so I soldered them to the two displays that came with my machine that had them missing. One of the displays now work and the other one keeps blowing in fuse when i plug it in. I read that if the glass corners are white this generally indicates the display is shot for good so i will look for another unit.

Marco order should be in next week so I can glue in all the new inserts and do my first insert leveling clear coat and then start the airbrush work.

Question about the diodes used. I have a listing here of parts 1n4004 and 1n270. I can get the 4004 ones easily but it seems harder to get the 270 ones. Is there a alternate that works for the 270.

Look in on Ebay i see a few listings with the hits of 1n270 but they look different.

A combination of things were done. I did a proper playfield scan so i was able to redraw lots of things and cut out the masking with my vinyl cutter. Some other areas are masked and the redrawn by hand then cut tout and peeled out. If the playfield was not so bad to begin with i would not of had those sanded down high spots.

Locking in the colours. Black, text and final touches are next. As you can see I fell back to my method I used on Lectronamo to cover the damaged natural playfiekd areas. Granted I went darker then I wanted but I think it’s ok.

I changed the sword a bit as you can see. The yellow was cool but no sword is yellow! Going to change the Handel of it to gold when doing the black lines. I also changed the pendant on his turbin to gold and the gem will be a metallic green like what’s in the sword Handel now.

I’m going to just fee ball it and make up my own black line designs / layouts. It’s not going to be a perfect copy of all the black lines on the original silkscreen but I’m sure it will still look good.

Bit of a colour change today. There was not enough contrast between the blade and quillions / pommel. I changed them to gold and kept the grip the leather brown. I’m feeling better about it now.

Lol so the gold was too gold for my liking. It looked pasted on and fake, so I ghosted it with black to make it look tarnished. Think I went a tad too dark. Might re-mask and lighten it up. I like the bright random outlines from intentionally offsetting the mask and I don’t want to lose that.

I think I will finish the rest of the board outlines then clear prior to doing the text. I can then lighten up the sword and if I mess it up I just need to remove the paint on the last clear coat.

Im also going to change the font on the playfield to reflect the theme a bit closer. I'm liking #3 so far.
